"Without any discrimination, we have completed the first phase of deportation of illegal immigrants from Myanmar with 38 more immigrants leaving Manipur, India today through Moreh," Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said in a post on X.

"A total of 77 illegal immigrants have been deported in the first phase. One Indian national was also brought back from Myanmar during the handover ceremony.

"The State Government is continuing the identification of illegal immigrants and at the same time biometric data are being recorded.

Let’s keep our borders and country secure," he said.

The Manipur government on March 8 began deporting "Myanmar nationals" who had fled a recent surge in fighting between the ruling junta and pro-democracy insurgents in the border region, Chief Minister N Biren Singh had said.

"First batch of Myanmar nationals who entered India illegally deported today," Singh has said, without providing specific numbers.

"Although India is not signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, it has given shelter and aid to those fleeing the crisis in Myanmar on humanitarian grounds with a systematic approach," he stated.

Thousands of civilians have fled the fighting in Myanmar, crossing into ethnic violence-hit Manipur and neighbouring Mizoram.

In March the Chief Minister had posted a video showing the Myanmar nationals, mostly women and children, being sent away from the airport in the state capital Imphal.
