Share of Muslim population increased by 43 %, Hindus down by 7.82% - PM Economic Advisory Council

Surendra Jain, VHP, Joint general secretary, told a TV channel: "If Muslims are underdeveloped today, they are themselves responsible...their growing population is responsible. This issue of population increase is a national threat and hence VHP demands there should be a small family norm and it should be applied in uniformity to all communities".

Most Muslim-majority countries in India's neighbourhood saw an increase in Muslim population.

However, the Maldives had a drop of Muslim population by 1.47 per cent.

In India, Christians increased from 2.24 per cent in 1050 to 2.36 per cent in 2015 while Sikhs increased from 1.24 to 1.85 per cent. The Buddhists share in India's total population increased from 0.5 per cent to 0.81 in the mentioned period of six decades and half.

The study by PM-Economic Advisory Council also claims that in Bangladesh that came into being as an independent country in 1971, the Hindu population (1950/East Pakistan) decreased from 23 per cent to 8 per cent in 2015.

This was a significant 66 per cent decline.

In Pakistan, the Muslim population (Shia and Ahmaddiya groups) increased while Hindu population declined by 80 percent -- from 13 to 2 per cent in 2015.
