It may not be difficult to name a few performing Members of Parliament in the last decade.
But it will be certainly a difficult task first to shortlist the names and secondly, to put them according to the order of merit and so on !!
Hence this is random selection and very sketchy profiling !!
Let's name a few first : Shashi Tharoor -- Language and debating skills being principal assets on his side.
Then we may say Cuttack MP Bhatruhari Mahtab and the former Biju Janata Dal leader is now a BJP candidate.
Late Devi Prasad Tripathi (DP Tripathi/DPT) -- He was a serious lawmaker and in 2013 Budget session, he had recorded 100 per cent attendance. He was with NCP and once very close to Sharad Pawar.
Saugata Roy of Trinamool Congress. His political inclination and 'surrender' before Mamata Banerjee could be debated; but not his knowledge on parliamentary matters.
From the BJP we could easily name Late Arun Jaitley, Late Sushma Swaraj, L K Advani of course but who did not speak much as a lawmaker since 2014 and in fact also the incumbent foreign minister Dr S Jaishankar.
Now quotes and anecdotes:
In an apparent attack on Shashi Tharoor's Sunanda Pushkar, PM Naredra Modi had said at a Lok Sabha election rally in Shimla in 2014: "Wah kya girlfriend hai. Aapne kabhi dekha hai 50 crore ki girlfriend?" (What a girlfriend? Have you ever seen a 50-crore girlfriend).
Tharoor shot back tweeting - "My wife is worth a lot more than your imaginary 50 crores. She is priceless." During UPA rule when he was a Minister; Tharoor courted controversies by his cattle-class remark.
His remark that he would travel "cattle class in solidarity with all our holy cows", in a Twitter posting, had came in the backdrop of an austerity drive taken by the UPA Government and the Congress party in 2009.
Of course, one thing I repeatedly say and write about Tharoor. He has something common with my daughter Tanvi. Can you guess ?
Well, both their fathers worked for 'The Statesman' newspaper. Add to this unique list is Jaya Bachchan. Her father also worked for the same newspaper years back.
The soft-spoken Mr Mahatab is a serious lawmaker and a keen debater. If he makes it to Lok Sabha this time, he will be an asset to the BJP.
By convention the 22-member Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is headed by an opposition leader as Chairman and the sub committee to look into 'non compliance' of CAG report was set up with Mahatab as its chairman when K V Thomas, Congress MP from Kerala, was the chairman of PAC.
In 2017, Congress President Sonia Gandhi expressed 'displeasure' on how the high-voltage controversial Bofors gun deal scandal returned to the political discourse yet again, even as a section of Congress leaders had blamed BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for blowing it up. Mahatab's panel had pulled up the CBI.
In 2023 when new set of Bills replacing sedition law and others were piloted in Lok Sabha, Biju Janata Dal lawmaker Mahatab welcomed the new Bills and initiative taken by the government and said, "It is a good beginning...we are witness to the history in making".
"This fulfills our wishes of many years....I used to write about these as a journalist and we took up the matter during Vajpayee's tenure in 1998 and later. In fact, the then Home Minister L K Advani had also assured the House that these changes will be made," Mahtab said.

Home Minister says interim bail to Kejriwal doesn’t mean a clean chit: ‘His understanding of law is at fault’
Hours after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would “retire” at 75 and Home Minister Amit Shah would step into his role, Shah asserted that Modi would “finish his term”.
Speaking at the Hyderabad BJP office, Shah said, “I want to say this to Arvind Kejriwal and company and INDI alliance that do not need to feel happy about Narendra Modi turning 75.
No such thing is mentioned in the BJP’s constitution. Modi ji is going to complete this term and Modi ji will continue to lead the country into the future.
There is no confusion within the BJP; they want to create confusion.”
Speaking to ANI later, he said, “INDI alliance leaders know we are going to cross 400 seats and Modi ji will become PM for the third time, which is why they are spreading such misconceptions.
I want to clarify that there is no such provision in BJP’s constitution. Modi ji will lead till 2029 and Modi ji will lead the upcoming elections. There is no good news for the INDI alliance.”
Speaking at the AAP office in Delhi, Kejriwal had said, “These people (BJP) ask the INDIA bloc, who is going to be your PM? Who is your candidate? I ask the BJP, who is going to be your PM? He (Modi) is turning 75 years old next September. He is the one who made the rule that party members who turn 75 years old have to retire.
He has to retire next year. So I ask BJP, who is your PM pick? Who will fulfil Modi’s guarantees? Will Amit Shah do it? When you go out to vote, remember, you are voting for Amit Shah, not for Modi.”
