Supreme Court Asks Wikipedia To Remove Name Of Victim In RG Kar Hospital Rape-Murder Case

CJI: The governing principle is that identity of the victim in rape and murder shall not be disclosed. Wikipedia  shall therefore comply with the previous order passed (regarding this).

CJI Chandrachud: During the course of hearing we are apprised the #Wikipedia has retained the name and copy of the ...it is only an artistic graphic

Solicitor General : The girl had a specific hairstyle it is being depicted everywhere

During the hearing counsel Karuna Nandy said - "The demonizing of the doctors has to stop".

CJI told West Bengal govt's counsel Kapil Sibal : "..the whole problem is when you entrust the security to contractual staff ....why is the govt is coming up with this? its not the question ...".

Sibal stated that his junior women colleagues were being threatened. Hence, he requested that live hearing of the matter should be halted but the Court refused to accede to that request.

"We will not stop the livestreaming. It is in public interest," the CJI remarked.

CJI: "We are in a situation where there is lack of security for medical doctors, the state should have atleast police in the govt hospitals .......we are dealing with young interns, students, they are staying our of home and coming to Kolkata to work, tell us what you are doing for them".

Crisis in Governance: That's new image of 'aapa'

Noting that the Supreme Court has seen the CBI’s status report on its investigation into the RG Kar case, Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud remarked,

“We are ourselves disturbed by what we have read.”

The Supreme Court is hearing a suo moto case regarding the alleged rape and murder of a resident doctor at  the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The court said, “We have looked at the CBI report, disclosing status will jeopardise further investigation.”

The Supreme Court also refused to stop the live streaming of proceedings in the case. The Court stated that transparency is crucial for the public interest.

Meanwhile, junior doctors in West Bengal continued their ‘cease work’ protest and sit-in near Swasthya Bhawan, demanding that the state government act on its recent promises.

The doctors expressed partial satisfaction after a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who agreed to their doctors and removed Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and Deputy Commissioner (North).

She has also dismissed the Director of Medical Education and the Director of Health Services.  She also committed to infrastructure improvements and safety measures in hospitals.
