Noting that the Supreme Court has seen the CBI’s status report on its investigation into the RG Kar case, Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud remarked,
“We are ourselves disturbed by what we have read.”
The Supreme Court is hearing a suo moto case regarding the alleged rape and murder of a resident doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The court said, “We have looked at the CBI report, disclosing status will jeopardise further investigation.”
The Supreme Court also refused to stop the live streaming of proceedings in the case. The Court stated that transparency is crucial for the public interest.
Meanwhile, junior doctors in West Bengal continued their ‘cease work’ protest and sit-in near Swasthya Bhawan, demanding that the state government act on its recent promises.
The doctors expressed partial satisfaction after a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who agreed to their doctors and removed Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and Deputy Commissioner (North).
She has also dismissed the Director of Medical Education and the Director of Health Services. She also committed to infrastructure improvements and safety measures in hospitals.
