A delegation of junior doctors, protesting over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, reached Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence on Saturday, hours after she made a surprise visit to their protest site and promised them to look into their demands.
Amid rain, the doctors arrived at Mamata Banerjee's residence on a bus. Earlier, the doctors had welcomed Mamata Banerjee's surprise visit to the protest site outside Swasthya Bhavan, West Bengal's health department headquarters, in Salt Lake, and were later asked by the Chief Minister to visit her residence for a meeting at 6 pm today.
Urging the doctors to end their protest and return to work, Mamata Banerjee said, "I came to meet you as your 'didi' (elder sister), not as the Chief Minister. I assure you that I will study your demands and take action if someone is found guilty. This is my last attempt to resolve the crisis," the Chief Minister said.
"It rained all night on Friday. The way you are sitting here, I am suffering. I have also not slept night after night for the last 34 days. Because if you are on the road, I also have to stay awake as a guard," she added.
She said that in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) was used to dismantle similar protests.

BJP demands NIA probe and Mamata Banerjee's resignation
A 58-year-old ragpicker was injured in a blast that occurred today at around 1.45 pm on the intersection of Blochmann Street and S N Banerjee Road in central Kolkata.
The incident prompted an immediate response from officials of the Taltala Police Station who observed a plastic gunny bag at the entry point of Blochmann Street.
The area was immediately cordoned off with security tape, and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was summoned to investigate.
The BDDS personnel conducted a thorough inspection of the bag and the surrounding area. Following their clearance, traffic in the vicinity was resumed.
Additionally, forensic investigations are underway to determine the cause and nature of the explosion.
Meanwhile, the ragpicker, identified as Bapi Das, was rushed to NRS Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Due to his condition, his statement has not yet been recorded, an official said.
Reacting to the incident, Bengal BJP leader and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar called for a thorough investigation by the National Investigating Agency (NIA).
"The explosion is of great concern. It should be investigated thoroughly. In particular, I feel that an investigation by NIA is required. I don't think the police have that kind of professionalism to investigate this incident," he said.
"I urge you to consider a detailed investigation by the NIA or another central agency to ensure a thorough examination of all possible angles related to the incident," Majumdar wrote in a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah.
