Modi's trusted NSA Doval meets Putin : But West has to realise that Russian Prez is still a tough nut !!

Speaking on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Vladimir Putin had said - “If there is a desire of Ukraine to carry on with the negotiations, I can do that.”

Putin also said he was constantly in touch with India, China and Brazil. “We respect our friends and partners, who, I believe, sincerely seek to resolve all issues surrounding this conflict".

Of course, 'an Indian role' to facilitate peace process between Russia and Ukraine was announced much before all these. Everyone - globally - sees Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a big role to play.

Recently, Modi's trusted National Security Advisor (NSA) went to Russia for BRICS meet of NSAs and also met Putin and briefed him on Modi's perspective vis-a-vis the conflict.

However, Daniel Markey, senior adviser for South Asia at the United States Institute of Peace suggests that the likelihood of India brokering peace is unlikely “unless the terms and timing of the talks are favorable to both Putin or Zelensky,” according to the 'Moscow Times'.

Notably, he Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was less forthcoming on Doval's visit in the context of forward movement towards a peace process.

Doval's visit, Russia said - was “all happening within the framework of the Russian Federation’s presidency of BRICS."

Yet the meeting between the President Putin and Doval was crucial in more ways than one. Not long ago, India's foreign minister Dr S Jaishankar also had an audience with the Russian President.

If the US or the western bloc think otherwise, they are wrong. Putin is still a tough nut.

On Friday, Sept 13, Putin issued a stark warning to the West regarding potential consequences if Ukraine is allowed to strike Russian territory using Western-supplied long-range missiles.

The Kremlin said during his remarks, Putin stated that such a move would fundamentally change the nature of the conflict, suggesting that it would lead to a confrontation between Russia and the West.

He emphasised that allowing Ukraine to target Russian territory with these advanced weapons would escalate the scope of the war.

”The statement made by President Putin is very important. It is extremely clear, unambiguous and does not allow for double readings. We have no doubt that this statement reached those it was intended for,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will discuss whether to give the go-ahead for such strikes at talks in Washington.

Putin said that such a move would drag the countries supplying Kyiv with long-range missiles directly into the war.

He said satellite targeting data and programming of the missiles’ flight paths would have to be provided by NATO military personnel, as Kyiv did not have the capabilities itself.
