Sandip Ghosh, ex-RG Kar hospital principal, and Station House Officer Abhijit Mandal arrested by CBI

Both were arrested for destroying the evidence and misleading the investigation.

Notably, Ghosh was earlier arrested by the CBI in a separate case related to alleged financial irregularities in the RG Kar hospital and underwent a polygraph test.

Abhijit Mondal, officer-in-charge of Tala police station brought to BR Singh Hospital, in Kolkata for a medical test

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and a police officer for the alleged delay in filing the FIR and missing evidence in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor.

The cop arrested along with Ghosh is Station House Officer (SHO) of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mandal.

Frustrated Mamata Banerjee on Saturday, Sept 14 said :
"I agreed and I have been waiting. Please do not insult me like this."

"When we came here, we had demanded video recording or live-streaming of the talks. We were not allowed. Then the chief minister came out and appealed to us to join the talks, promising that we would receive the minutes of the meeting. We discussed among ourselves and agreed to join the meeting without live-streaming or video recording," a protesting doctor said.

"When we conveyed this to Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya, we were told to leave the venue because it was too late and they had been waiting for us for three hours. We were unceremoniously asked to leave," the doctor added.

The beleaguered Chief Minister told the protesting doctors waiting outside her home in the rain, -

"Today, you said you wanted a meeting with me. I agreed .... Earlier, I waited for you for two hours, but you didn't come."

Dr Aqeeb who was part of the delegation that went to meet CM Mamata Banerjee, says, "....We were ready for minutes after CM appealed...We were discussing and when we were about to go (for the meeting), we were told that the time was up, and the CM cannot meet us.....

We will wait for the next communication with the CM. Till then we will continue protesting...".   The Chief Minister told the doctors to at least come inside her house and have a cup of tea if they were unwilling to meet her.

"All of us - the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Home Secretary - are waiting for you all. We have given you umbrellas so that you don't get wet (in the rain).

We have also made arrangements for you to sit inside. Please come inside and just have a tea at least if you don't want to talk with me," Mamata Banerjee said.

When the agitating doctors persisted with their demand to record the meeting, the Chief Minister stressed that the same was not mentioned in the letter today and said the matter is sub-judice.

"Nowhere in the letter, it was mentioned that you wanted the meeting to be livestreamed. But I assure you that we will record everything and I will provide a copy to you. I will make sure that the video (of the meeting) won't be released till the Supreme Court allows it," she said.

She cited security constraints over the permission to use videography and the number of doctors being accommodated in her home.

"Fifteen of you were supposed to come here but 40 of you have come here. Can 40 people be accommodated inside a person's house? I have made all the arrangements for you, though. I beg you all to come inside. If you don't want to hold a meeting, then at least have some tea," she said.

Earlier in the day, Mamata Banerjee made a surprise visit to the protest site of doctors at Swasthya Bhavan, West Bengal's health headquarters, in the Salt Lake area and urged the doctors to return to duty soon.

She promised to look into their demands and said it was her "last attempt" to resolve the crisis. She also said she would not take any action against doctors, adding that "Bengal was not like Uttar Pradesh".

"We will not stop until the justice is done," screamed a protester on the streets of Kolkata.

Many feel the agitation is also guided by common people and especially Hindu community's and middle class (Bhadrolok) anguish against a dispensation which has been blatantly pro-Muslim.

Those who know Mamata Banerjee's politics know it pretty well that she also hails from the Congress school of politics -- where resignation is for others. The self politics is guided by power games at any cost.

"CM Mamata Banerjee has problem with Live Streaming when there is a bilateral discussion with the Junior Doctors, but she doesn't have any problem with Live Coverage when she suddenly makes an appearance and unilaterally starts delivering an one sided speech, and carefully traversing between her various agendas," tweeted LoP West Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari.

The BJP legislator and also a former MP further says --- that Mamata regime has been -- " # trying to paint a picture of concerned administrator, as the agitating Junior Doctors were forced to sit whole night in the rain and bad weather due to her reluctance to live stream the Meeting scheduled earlier on 12th September

# trying to gain sympathy by stating that she has arrived, even though those in charge of her security didn't approve, but her statement made no sense as she was accompanied by the DG himself, how much more security does she requires?

#  issuing covert threat, that though she doesn't mean any harm, but the next date of hearing is a couple of days later

# conceding some space by disbanding the "Rogi Kalyan Samitis"

# when subjected with the slogans of "We want Justice", trying to deflect the attention towards the CBI

# fear mongering by asking to refuse the food provided by the general public who are supporting this movement

# trying to create a false public perception that she is more than willing to discuss but the Junior Doctors are adamant

CM Mamata Banerjee, everyone knows how "real & genuine" was your 26 days agitation.

"You are unnerved and petrified by the actual and rightful agitation of the Junior Doctors and the spontaneous protests by the civil society. People now filter everything you say."

If you really want to save your image publicly, at least resign as the Health & Home Minister.

The Calcutta High Court had given the CBI a three-week deadline to submit a progress report on their ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar hospital last month. The report is expected to be presented before the court on September 17.

The body of the 31-year-old trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. Autopsy reports suggested she was brutally raped before being murdered.

A day later, Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, who admitted to raping and murdering the doctor.
