Smriti Irani has edge in Amethi : Axis My India exit poll ::: BJP retains Arunachal Pradesh, SKM records resounding win in Sikkim :::: "Thank you Arunachal Pradesh", says PM Modi

The BJP retained power in Arunachal Pradesh for the second straight term, securing 46 of 60 seats. In Sikkim, the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) registered an impressive victory, winning 31 of 32 seats.

The counting in Arunachal Pradesh began with the BJP winning 10 seats unopposed.

The National People's Party of Conrad Sangma, incumbent Meghalaya Chief Minister, won five seats, the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) won two, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and independents won three seats each, and Congress won one seat.

Celebrations began in Arunachal Pradesh as the BJP crossed the majority mark and looked comfortable for a second consecutive term. The scenario was the same in Sikkim where SKM workers were snapped singing, clapping and rejoicing about their party's yet another victory.

In a post on the microblogging site X, PM Modi also thanked the people of Arunachal Pradesh for "reposing their faith in the BJP.

"Thank you Arunachal Pradesh! The people of this wonderful state have given an unequivocal mandate to politics of development. My gratitude to them for reposing their faith in @BJP4Arunachal yet again. Our Party will keep working with even greater vigour for the state’s growth," he wrote on X.

In another post, PM Modi also congratulated Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) and its chief Prem Singh Tamang for winning the Assembly polls in the state.

Arunachal Pradesh is the only state in Northeast India where Arunachali Hindi, which is very similar to Hindi, is the lingua franca. This facilitates a greater connection with national issues. Due to the history of the 1962 war and current geopolitical realities, the common person in the state remains extremely patriotic and aligns with the Government of India’s approach to improving national security.

Additionally, the increase in devolution of funds to 42 per cent on the recommendation of the 14th Finance Commission provides smaller states like Arunachal Pradesh greater freedom to plan according to their needs.

Smriti Irani has edge in Amethi fight: Axis My India exit poll

The India Today-Axis My India exit poll predicted a win for BJP MP Smriti Irani in Amethi in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. However, it is a close fight with Congress's KL Sharma.

In 2019, she defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who had represented the Amethi seat for 15 years, by 55,120 votes in 2019. In their first contest in 2014, Gandhi had defeated Irani.

Irani's win was a major setback for the Congress party, which suffered a huge electoral loss in north Indian states.

This time too, there was speculation that Rahul Gandhi might contest from Amethi against Smriti Irani. On several occasions, the BJP leader taunted the Gandhi scion for a rematch and dared him to contest against her.

Congress workers even put up his posters in the constituency a day before nomination. However, Rahul Gandhi decided to contest from Raebareli, another party stronghold which was earlier represented by his mother, Sonia Gandhi.
