Mandate Missive is - Naga voters do not agree to anti-Christian operations : Therie
"Neiphiu Rio has lost the moral right to rule"
New Delhi
The Mandate 2024 has sent a strong message to Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Pradesh Congress chief and ex Minister Kewekhape Therie has said.
"The mandate 2024 message is Nagaland Voters do not agree to anti-Christian operations and the deliberate delay of Final Solution to the Naga political issue," Therie told this journalist over phone.
"In Nagaland, people voted for Congress. Personally, I feel delighted as we struggled for a decade and more to keep our relevance before the electorate," he said.
"In fact, Neiphiu Rio has lost the moral right to rule. Out of 13 lakh votes NDPP candidate secured only 3.5 lakhs. The ENPO area abstained from voting in protest against the State Govt failure to address their demand for Territorial Autonomous Council. In contrast, our Congress candidate Supongmeren secured 4 lakh votes," the former Finance, PHE and Power Minister pointed out.

To a question, he said, "The Chief Minister Rio has lost his glamour. He has failed to protect his people’s interest and deliberately delayed the implementation of agreed political issues. It is his responsibility to work out details with the negotiating team keeping in the impact of its subjects and the economy of the state".
He said that the message from Lok Sabha polls 2024 ought to be understood by all and sundry and then respected properly. "I know MLAs are with the Chief Minister for their election debts only. They know they have no future with the Govt and also in the next election. Some NDPP MLAs have openly blamed the BJP for the Lok Sabha election debacle. Everything is not well".
Moreover, Therie pointed out the significance of the mandate at the national level and stated, "The BJP at the Centre is also at the mercy of the NDA partners. People understand that the Modi government doesn't have absolute power any more".
Referring to the mandate in Manipur wherein both the BJP and the NPF lost Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur seats, Therie said, "The voters have shown their anger against the BJP government. People did not fear terrorist organizations anymore. Northeast Christian states have only exercised conscious votes observing N Biren Singh and Himanta Biswa Sarma’s operations against Christians".
In the context of Nagaland, Therie said, "We have the opposition-less Govt since 2015 for political solution. What they achieved is 25 factions. There is no more governance in Nagaland. Every faction is issuing orders for tax collection. The state Govt has never prevented any faction from collecting or banned any of them".
Therie further added, "Corruption and nepotism are other two major challenges practiced by State Govt at all levels. Every member is corrupt. There is none to throw the first stone against the criminal. We are outside, we may criticize but the Central Govt should handle the challenges and deliver."
Answering a question, he said, "The day results came I got a WhatsApp message from a group of Naga youths who said the defeat of NDPP is the best political news Nagas had for themselves in the last two decades. I did not expect such strong reactions.
But these signify people's anguish and why they have been angry for the last 20 years".
The Govt did use all the forces. In one polling station NDPP appointed two polling agents but NDPP nominee could bag only 1 vote, "which means one NDPP polling agent did not give the vote to his own NDPP party candidate".
"In other polling Stations, NDPP deployed youth to capture polling booths, but inside polling booths they voted for the Indian National Congress candidate."
Answering a question on the Manipur situation, he said, "....when the Manipur situation engulfed since 3rd May 2023, we all were concerned... I kept warning people through the media. The BJP govt at the centre assured that the state government will be able to handle it. But we knew things would take ugly turn."
"Today, the question is whether the government tried to solve the Manipur problems. In the name of ethnic clashes, Nagaland Christians were rendered voiceless by BJP and Alliance Govt. This is the reason people have expressed their voice through a vote of their unhappiness".
To another question, Therie said, "It will be always wise to take the Lok Sabha poll results as a warning. The concept of a proposed theocratic state either imaginative or fictional does not make sense in India.
In contrast, the INDIA bloc based the entire election campaign on the slogan, "Save the Constitution". People of India and people of Manipur and Nagaland have endorsed this".
