"Never carry an impression that only you build reputations," Jagdeep Dhankhar slammed Jaya Bachchan.
Jaya Bachchan and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar were involved in a heated exchange after the actor was introduced as 'Jaya Amitabh Bachchan' in Rajya Sabha. Bachchan flagged Dhankhar's "unacceptable tone", drawing an angry retort from him.
'Enough of it': Jagdeep Dhankhar-Jaya Bachchan's angry Rajya Sabha face-off
"I am an artist. I understand body language and expressions. But your tone is not right. We are your colleagues, but your tone is unacceptable," Jaya Bachchan said.
To this, Dhankhar told Ms Jaya Bachchan to understand the importance of maintaining decorum even if she is a celebrity. But he lost his cool as Opposition members sided with the actor-politician and protested against the Chairman.
"Jaya ji you have earned a great reputation. You know an actor is subject to the director. But every day, I do not want to repeat myself. Every day, I don't want to do schooling. You are talking about my tone? Enough of it. You may be anybody. You have to understand the decorum.
You can be a celebrity but accept decorum," Dhankhar fired back at Bachchan.
The Rajya Sabha Chairman asked the Opposition MPs to stop protesting and take their places but to no avail. "I have to be in action and take care of the situation," he said.
"Never carry an impression that only you build reputations," Dhankhar slammed Bachchan while accusing the Opposition of attempting to destabilise the nation.
"There is a lack of decorum. You are walking away from your duty," Dhankhar said before the Opposition MPs, including Jaya Bachchan, walked out of the Rajya Sabha.
Union Minister JP Nadda, also the Leader of the House of Rajya Sabha, moved a censure motion against Jaya Bachchan over her remarks targeting Dhankhar.
PREVIOUS FACE-OFFS BETWEEN BACHCHAN AND DHANKHAR
This is the third such face-off between Dhankhar and Bachchan in the past 10 days over the former being referred to as 'Jaya Amitabh Bachchan'.
On July 29, Bachchan objected to using her husband Amitabh Bachchan's name as her middle name, saying every woman had their own identity too.
Calling her to speak in the Rajya Sabha, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh said, "Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan ji, please."
To this, the actor replied, "Sir, sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata (It would’ve been enough to call me Jaya Bachchan)."
Harivansh pointed out that her name was registered like that in records.
"Opposition parties feel that the Chairman's approach is partisan. The Rajya Sabha is a House that sets parameters for other legislatures. In that House, the Chairman should not be seen partisan. The Congress alone does not feel that way, all opposition parties feel his behaviour is partial towards one side," Congress leader Ajay Maken said at a press conference.
"We are not school children. I was upset with the tone and especially when the LoP stood up to speak, his mic was switched off. How can you do this? If he is not going to be heard in the House, then what are we doing? On top of that, every time (they are) using words which are unparliamentary," Jaya Bachchan said.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh told reporters that Ghanshyam Tiwari had insulted the Leader of Opposition in the House in front of everybody.
"Today it was said that Ghanshyam Tiwari came and in a closed door meeting praised Kharge ji. So what he said privately, we demanded that he should say it in the House. He insulted Kharge ji, he should say that what I said was wrong and I respect him and by mistake I said what I said," Ramesh said.
Addressing the Rajya Sabha, Bachchan, a Samajwadi Party MP, expressed her disapproval of Dhankhar's tone in the House which led to an exchange of words between the two. The opposition finally walked out with Sonia Gandhi and other senior leaders.
ends
Jagdeep Dhankar, now country's VP has always been known for his arrogance and adament attitude irrespective of the situation. Just take the case of Venkaiah Naidu, the previous VP who was in these kind of circumstances many a times but he handled them very tactfully and diplomatically without being biased to anyone. There's actually no place for Dhankar like guys in such statutory positions, in my opinion.
