The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for rain in 11 districts in Gujarat and a yellow alert for 22 districts on August 29, as heavy rain continues to batter the state due to a deep depression in the region.  Similarly, it has issued a yellow alert for North Gujarat, Central Gujarat and South Gujarat.

Although the rain stopped in Vadodara, flooding incidents were reported in several low-lying areas after the Vishwamitri river breached its banks and entered residential localities.  ,

Gujarat and Rajasthan hit by unprecedented land-based deep depression, triggering rainfall levels exceeding 1,000% above normal and devastating floods.

The arid regions of Saurashtra and Kutch experienced 95.2 mm of rain, an excess of 3,866 per cent. Sixteen out of Gujarat’s 36 districts received over 100 mm of absolute rainfall, while 20 districts recorded rainfall levels exceeding 1,000 per cent above the norm.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel of full support from the central government as the state battles severe flooding caused by continuous heavy rainfall.

In a tele conversation, the PM inquired about the ongoing relief and rescue operations in the state.

The Chief Minister shared details of the call on social media platform X and said that the Prime Minister provided guidance on protecting citizens and livestock, and promised all necessary assistance from the Central government.

“Hon’ble Prime Minister is constantly monitoring the situation, worrying about Gujarat. He has a deep affection in his heart for the people of Gujarat,” Patel wrote.

The situation in Gujarat has become increasingly dire, with over 26,000 people evacuated and more than 1,500 rescued across various districts.

Vadodara and Morbi districts are among the worst affected, with severe waterlogging disrupting normal life. In Morbi, authorities were forced to open the gates of the Macchu dam due to rising water levels.

Health Minister Rishikesh Patel and Minister Jagdish Vishwakarma are travelling to Vadodara to assess the damage and oversee relief operations. Assembly Speaker Balkrishna Shukla is set to hold a review meeting with local administration officials.

The state government said that 23,871 people have been relocated to safer areas, with the highest number moved from Panchmahal district. The Indian Air Force has been deployed to assist with rescue operations in Vadodara and Jamnagar.
