Modi will make hat-trick and join illustrious 'Nehru club', says Naga leader Dr Sukhato

New Delhi

Sitting Pughoboto legislator and LJP (RV) leader Dr A Sukhato Sema on Wednesday welcomed his party's formal joining the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

"We were also close to the BJP and both me and our leader Chirag Paswan are admirers of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Now we are technically part of the ruling front in the country. That makes our job even in small states like Nagaland more responsible....We two LJP MLAs are already extending support to the Neiphiu Rio government," Dr Sukhato told 'Nagaland Page'.

He said, "The NDA meeting on Tuesday was immensely successful and all and sundry have reposed faith in the leadership of Modi ji....On the other hand, there are 26 parties and they may have at least six Prime Ministerial ambitious leaders in the opposition camp".

"Chirag Paswan represented our party and we know his stature has gone up in the alliance now," Dr Sukhato said. To a question, he said, "No Prime Minister other than Jawahar Lel Nehru had won three elections consecutively....Not even Indira Gandhi. Our Narendra Modi ji is now set for a hat-trick win and he will join the illustrious Nehru club".

Nehru's prime ministerial tenure spanning 6,130 days – around 17 years - was the longest premiership in the country and ended with his demise on May 27, 1964. Nehru won three elections consecutively in 1951–52, 1957 and 1962.

Dr Sukhato, who was BJP vice president in Nagaland and quit the party only after the Pughoboto seat was taken away by the NDPP, said, “I agree with what the Prime Minister said. We must always stick to positive politics even when someone is not in any public office. People's mandate has to be respected.

This is why we think elected MLAs should have a greater say in deciding about the developmental projects for our people".

"Politically, I do not mind 26 parties floating a new coalition or reviving an old one. But they are directionless. On the other hand, the NDA has a very good track record of performance. Over 13.5 crore people in India were lifted out of poverty after 2015 as per the Niti Aayog report," he said.

On Opposition parties naming their coalition as 'I.N.D.I.A', he said, "Don't you think they are greatly influenced and puzzled by our Prime Minister? I feel such a name by the opposition parties is only a big achievement to Modi's vision of 'New India' that will strive for progress and prosperity for each citizen in every corner of this country".

Asked about the supposed 'pessimism' around Naga peace talks, he said, "Who told you people are pessimistic ? The Naga peace talks are very much on track and we all know that Prime Minister Modi has a good habit of giving pleasant surprises to the people".

Mizoram Govt orders "enhanced security" for Meiteis in Aizawl as Ex-militants' outfit asks Meiteis to leave

In view of the deteriorating law and order situation in Manipur where Zo and Kuki communities, who share ethnic bond with Mizos, have been targeted, the Mizoram government has ordered enhanced security for the Meitei population.

"In anticipation of a possible development of tension which could threaten the security of Meiteis living in Aizawl, due to public outrage against the recent viral video of two tribal Kuki-Zo brutally assaulted in Manipur, security arrangement is made to ensure safety of Meiteis in Aizawl," said DIG, North Range, Aizawl Police, Lallianmawia, IPS.

Protesters in Imphal demand exemplary punishment for culprits

Meanwhile,   in a statement issued from Aizawl, the Peace Accord MNF Returnees' Association (PAMRA) said, "The situation in Mizoram has become tense and it is no longer safe for Meitei people from Manipur to live in Mizoram in the wake of barbaric and heinous acts committed by miscreants in Manipur."

"The PAMRA appeals to all Meitei people in Mizoram to leave for their home state as a safety measure," the statement read.

In a telephonic conversation, Mizoram Chief Minister and MNF leader Zoramthanga has assured his Manipur counterpart N Biren Singh of the safety of Meiteis in Mizoram.

More than 160 people have lost their lives and several injured since ethnic clashes between Meitais and Kukis and Zo communities broke out in the state since May 3.

The root cause of the violence is said to be in the protest staged by a 'Tribal Solidarity March' by Kukis against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Manipur has a history of conflicts between different communities rooted in the argument of hate politics revolving around 'we and they' syndromes.

Hundreds of Meiteis, including students, mostly from Manipur and Assam, live in Mizoram.

A large number of Kuki-Zo people who fled Manipur after the violence along with women and children are staying in different parts of Mizoram.

Political forces in Mizoram including MNF under BJP's ally Zoramthanga has also called for reviving the demand for 'Greater Mizoram'.

Civil society leaders in Aizawl say there are a good number of Meitei community people - Hindus, Muslims and also Christians - staying in the Mizoram state capital and other places.

A large number of Meitei people in and around Aizawl are in the motor mechanic and auto-parts business.

The MNF-led Mizoram government has asked the union Ministry of Home Affairs to sanction Rs 5 crore for providing relief to the "thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) from Manipur".

Mizoram Home Commissioner and Secretary H Lalengmawia will also convene a virtual meeting with all deputy commissioners next week in view of Manipur violence.

In Imphal on June 1 at the end of his visit to the state including violence-hit Churachandpur district,
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the Kuki militant groups under Suspension of Operation (SoO) who defy the
ground rules will face stringent actions.

He also outlined a series of measures aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region and emphasised
the importance of adhering to the ground rules established for militant groups operating under the SoO agreement.

He announced the setting up of a judicial probe panel headed by a retired high court judge and also a CBI
probe to look into the 'conspiracy' angle for triggering unprecedented armed conflict between non-tribal
Meiteis and tribals and especially Kukis and other smaller Zo community people.
