Stories of and around post-Godhra riots of 2002 keep coming back. The Sickularism has been defeated but the 'money' generated from Film Jihad cause -- also locally joked as 'Sufi-Sujata' gamers - do keep them alive and kicking.
Gulf money is one source of inspiration.
The film 'Empuraan' is in news.
It shows Hindu men mercilessly beating a Muslim child and committing horrific violence against a pregnant Muslim woman. Gujarat 2002 is back in debate and perhaps first mission is accomplished.
Opposed to that a typically pro-Congress version is - The dynamic duo of Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mohanlal has worked its magic once again, propelling 'L2: Empuraan' past the Rs 60 crore mark at the international box office on Day 1.
Not surpirisingly - 'Empuraan' also had the highest opening for a Malayali film in India grossing over Rs 20 crore on Day 1 with majority audience from Kerala, beating “Rekhachitram”.
"We must not forget that the culprits of the 2002 Godhra train tragedy have been found guilty by the court and punished, while the political agenda of Congress to use the riots as a tool has been rejected many time," goes an article in RSS-run 'Organiser'.
"The film wherein popularstar Mohanlal has a lead role uses violence to vilify an entire Hindu community. It is not acceptable," said a BJP leader from one of the southern states.
Meanwhile, the Kerala unit of Congress party tweeted applauding the film.
"People who never stepped foot on Kerala’s soil were saying that a c-grade propaganda movie they released tax-free was the real Kerala story. Now a world class film Malayalam movie exposed the Sangh agenda and the division they plan in Kerala to capture control of our vast coastline and two major ports, they started crying".
Prithviraj Sukumaran has long been known for his political leanings, but in Empuraan, those leanings are presented with little subtlety. The film’s narrative not only vilifies Hindus but also specifically targets pro-Hindu political ideologies.
The villain, representing a character that aligns with BJP supporters, is portrayed as a ruthless individual determined to disrupt Kerala’s culture., says the article in the RSS-run magazine/web.
For checking the background; Prithviraj Sukumaran was born on 16 October, 1982 to the popular actors Sukumaran and Mallika Sukumaran at Thiruvananthapuram.
His family was settled in Tamil Nadu at the time, where he attended Shrine Vailankanni Senior Secondary School in T. Nagar, Chennai, and St. Joseph's Boys School, Coonoor.
Old timers in Kerala say senior Sukumaran was also for being pro-RSS.
Prithviraj : 'distorting' for Sickularism
There is already a controversy.
L2: Empuraan producer Gokulam Gopalan has said that he has asked director-actor Prithviraj to make changes to the film after it was claimed that it hurt the sentiments of a certain section of the audience.
"If any scenes or dialogues shown in the movie Empuraan hurt anyone, I have told director Prithviraj to make changes." Gopalan said.
But the real issue is not one film. It is the narrative they have tried to create to brainwash people especially in the run up to the 2026 assembly elections in Kerala.
The movie indirectly portrays incidents related to the Gujarat riots, focusing on the backstory of character Zayed Masood, portrayed by Sukumaran. The film also critically examines the alleged misuse of central agencies by the ruling party.
In May 2024, a tweet went public and that had said:
"Yes Mattancherry Mafia is a challenge for Malayalam film industry.
The entire narrative in TN about Malayalam movies was an artificially crafted propaganda to take over Tamil industry."
