*Empowering Women in Nagaland: Assam Rifles Leading the Way*
As the world celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8, it was imperative to recognize initiatives that drive real change in empowering women.
In Nagaland, the Assam Rifles has been at the forefront of promoting gender equality through skill development, employment generation, and pre-recruitment training programs, providing women with the tools to build a brighter future.
Women empowerment is more than just a concept; it is a necessity for the growth and development of any society. It involves challenging patriarchal norms, promoting equal opportunities, and ensuring women's participation in economic, social, and political spheres.
When women are empowered, they become agents of change, driving positive transformation within their families, communities, and beyond.
Assam Rifles has embraced this vision by initiating various programs that not only provide skill-based training but also instil confidence and independence among women.
One such initiative was conducted by the Assam Rifles in Jalukie, where a series of skill development programs were launched to enhance the social and economic well-being of women.
Interactive motivational sessions were organized to encourage young women to join the military services. Held on January 13, 16, and 21, 2025, these sessions saw the participation of nine enthusiastic girls who registered for the SSC (GD) examination.
To support them further, the training team at Jalukie provided a preparation capsule and mock tests.
The dedication and zeal displayed by these women were commendable, prompting the unit to offer them accommodation and meals at the Battalion Headquarters, ensuring that they could focus on their training without financial constraints.
In addition to career guidance, Assam Rifles has played a crucial role in equipping women with essential life skills.
Between October 1 and 4, 2024, a skill development program at the Family Welfare Centre of Assam Rifles brought together 40 families to participate in workshops on gift-wrapping, candle-making, jewellery-making, and culinary arts.
These sessions not only allowed women to explore their creativity but also provided them with opportunities to develop entrepreneurial skills, paving the way for financial independence.
Another remarkable project led by Assam Rifles is the pineapple canning plant in Medziphema, Nagaland.
This initiative, launched in collaboration with the local village council, has emerged as a beacon of sustainable development.
Utilizing the region’s abundant pineapple resources, the plant produces 235 cans of sliced pineapples daily, generating employment for six local workers, including four women, and providing indirect economic support to 30-40 farmers.
Managed by a cooperative society consisting of Assam Rifles personnel and village representatives, the plant is not just an economic venture but a platform where women are trained in canning techniques, business management, and quality control.
This initiative has empowered women by providing them with valuable skills, boosting their confidence, and increasing their self-sufficiency.
Similarly, in Dimapur, the Assam Rifles conducted pre-recruitment training for eleven women aspiring to join the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and Central Armed Police Forces.
This rigorous training program ensured that the candidates were physically and mentally prepared for the selection process.
Out of the eleven, five successfully passed and began their training at various centres in January 2025. Such programs have played a crucial role in breaking traditional gender barriers and opening new opportunities for women in defence services.
Among the inspiring stories of empowerment is that of Mughatoli Katty, a young woman from Dimapur who overcame financial hardships and societal expectations to achieve her dreams.
Born into a modest family, Mughatoli worked tirelessly to support her siblings while pursuing her own ambitions. Her journey led her to the Assam Rifles' pre-recruitment training, which helped her secure a place in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
Her success has not only uplifted her family but has also inspired young girls in her community to strive for excellence, proving that determination and the right opportunities can break any barrier.
In Chieswema, Assam Rifles has also initiated programs like tailoring and stitching workshops, SSC coaching classes, and gym infrastructure development, promoting fitness and self-defence among women.
In collaboration with NIEDO and Axis Bank, the force has extended free JEE and NEET coaching for underprivileged students in Nagaland, ensuring that young women aspiring to enter engineering and medical fields receive the best education.
Additionally, Assam Rifles has been supporting Chizami Weavers, preserving indigenous weaving traditions while empowering women with sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The impact of these initiatives has been profound, leading to increased self-confidence, economic independence, and social empowerment among the women of Nagaland. Assam Rifles’ unwavering commitment to gender equality proves that when given the right support, women can break free from limitations and achieve remarkable success.
On this International Women’s Day, as we celebrate the achievements of women worldwide, the efforts of Assam Rifles stand as a shining example of how empowering women is not just a moral duty but a crucial step toward a progressive and equitable society.
