India should have followed two or three party system, Jamir waxes eloquence

"NNO forced me & TN Angami out;  we later formed UDF"

New Delhi

A day after voting is over in Nagaland and fates of the candidates have been sealed, veteran leader Dr S C Jamir has said it is high time to put a check on the manner regional outfits and smaller parties have come up in India.

"Now that elections are over, Feb 27 voting in Nagaland is done, I can share my views more frankly and openly with you. Dev, mushrooming of regional parties have harmed India. But maybe we are late in more ways than one. Mushrooming of smaller, regional and even signboard varieties of parties have brought down the standard of parliamentary debate," veteran Jamir told 'Nagaland Page'.

He said as a result of this, people in Parliament discuss drains and roads. Some of these should have been handled in state assemblies and municipal bodies. Jamir who has worked with all Indian Prime Ministers since Jawaharlal Nehru said, "During our initial days in politics and in parliament; we used to think probably two or three political forces will dominate Indian political scene.

That would have helped India. I think many problems India faces today even after 75 years of its existence like caste-based politics would not have got encouragement".

"On the same backdrop, I will argue; linguistic based politics also were encouraged. This has triggered a dangerous trend. One party may be called a Bengali party or Tamil party. This was not the India, our founding fathers had imagined," he said.

Answering questions, Jamir, who first entered Parliament in 1961 and served till 1970, said, "Still this country has a huge potential. People are good and disciplined. They love their country. The spirit of nationalism is very strong. This was proved during the Kargil conflict of 1999.....Remember how our Assamese people resisted the pro-Pakistan campaign by ULFA. That's India's hidden strengths".

To another question, he said, no Naga worth his salt will deny the existence of the Naga political issue. "But at the same time, some of us took bullets on our bodies for whom......I think it is to uphold the Indian Constitution and for the unity and integrity of the country.

Why Naga soldiers and officials in the Indian army perform so brilliantly? Is it for their salary? No, it is for their devotion to work and in honour of the tri-colour. Think of the innocent Naga policeman from a village. All have a great sense of duty and devotion".

However, he said, "Unlike our time, these days politicians are there with selfish motives. We also had political differences with stalwarts like Hokishe Sema and R C Chitten Jamir and much later even my friend Vamuzo. But there were political issues involved. We did not fight over money or such paltry things".

To a question, Jamir referred to his days in the UDF in the 1970s.

He recalled quite vividly. "The Naga Nationalst Organization to which Hokishe and all of us were members passed a Resolution at Pfutsero general session affirming that "Naga underground are not hostiles but an integral part of Naga family and they should be treated as such".

This landmark resolution was not implemented by the NNO Govt. Hence differences arose within the party. Some of us led by T N Angami, former CM, were expelled from the party".

He further said, "So, along with the UFN we formed the UDF. In the subsequent election UDF came to power. It was the desire of the people we formed the UDF".

Jamir referred to the interaction we had in mid February, 2023.

"Therefore, when you met me before elections earlier this month, I was categorical with you about one thing, only the Congress party or a nationalist party like BJP can deliver in Nagaland, in northeast India or at the national level".

He suggested that no constitutional mechanism can prevent the floating of new parties. "I think the answer or corrective measure to this serious malady lies with the people. I think a churning process has started. Even in the northeast, people are now accepting the BJP and have given up the practice of untouchability."

"Because they realise, only nationalist parties under a decisive Prime Minister like Shri Narendra Modi can deliver," the former Chief Minister and ex-Gujarat Governor added.

"Hinduism is the greatest religion in terms of metaphysics. We should be proud of that," remarked Justice K M Joseph of Supreme Court

New Delhi

"Hinduism is the greatest religion in terms of metaphysics. We should be proud of that.  Please don't belittle it," remarked Justice K M Joseph of the Supreme Court.

In his verdict on a case related to renaming of places, the judge - a Christian himself - said, "The heights which Hinduism have in Upanishads, Vedas, Bhagavid Gita is unequal in any system. We should be proud of that".

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea that sought direction to the Union Home Ministry to set up a panel to restore the names of cities which were changed by Muslim rulers and invaders.

Millennium Park: Jorhat, Assam

Dismissing a PIL from Ashwini Upadhyay, judges Justice K M Joseph and Justice B V Nagarthna said, "We cannot wish away the invasions. But can't we move forward and deal with the problems at hand".

Justice Joseph also stated: "We have to understand our own greatness. Our greatness should lead us to be magnanimous. I am a Christian. But I am equally fond of Hinduism. I am trying to study it. You read the works of Dr S Radhakrishan on Hindu philosophy".

Concurring with him, Justice Nagarthna remarked: "Hinduism is a way of life. There is no bigotry in Hinduism". Justice Joseph further said. "If you come to Kerala, it was the Hindu rajas who donated lands for churches, they gave money. That is the history of India. Please understand that".

"Your fingers are pointed at one community. You must remember India is a secular country," the court said and also telling the petitioner - "Do you want to go back to the past, keep the issue alive and keep the country on the boil?".

According to sources, petitioner Upadhayay disagreed largely and said, "There is another history of India. Due to this kind of nature, Hindus have been wiped off from many historical places. Afghanistan, Pakistan. Even in India, Hindus are minority in seven states, in 200 districts".

He also maintained,  "Why history should start only from the 15th century or with Ghazni-Ghori? ....The right is not there for foreign invaders..only Indians..What is relationship of Aurangazeb, Tuglaq, Ghori with India?"

Upadhyay also tried to make a cause of his argument by stating that many historical places mentioned in Vedas and Puranas are now named after "foreign looters".

"We have roads after Lodhi, Ghazni, Ghori....there is no single road named after Pandavas, though Indraprastha was constructed by Yudhishtir....Faridabad named after person who looted the city", he maintained.

However, Justice Joseph said, "You run down a particular section of society. India is a secular state, this is a secular forum"".

Justice Nagarathna shared his opinion echoing similar sentiment,  "Hinduism is a way of life, because of that India has assimilated everybody. Because of that we are able to live together. Divide and rule policy of British brought about schism in our society. Let us not bring that back".

"Let us not break society with such kinds of petitions, please have the country in mind, not any religion", Justice Nagarathna said.

The bench dismissed the petition in the ultimate and said, "Actions must be taken which infuse all sections of the society together".

The court ordered, "India that is Bharat is a secular country. A country cannot remain a prisoner of the past. India is wedded to rule of law, secularism, constitutionalism of which Article 14 stands out as the grand guarantee of  both equality and fairness in State action.

The founding fathers contemplated India to be a Republic which is not merely confined to having an elected President which is the conventional understanding but also involves all sections of people; it is a democracy. It is important that the country must move forward".

On Voting day Amit Shah refers to Peace process :::: Over to 2024: What can Nagaland expect?

On Voting day Amit Shah refers to Peace process

New Delhi

Back to the corridors of power, G-60 and their shenanigans.

In journalistic sense we are still awaiting the scoop of the decades - the Solution to the Naga political imbroglio.

But a large number of state politicians and their 'well wishers' are not interested to go jobless. So, we just had an election -- many Nagas seemingly did not want it.

Others wanted it not for saving democracy, but for their own motives and interest. But these elections come and go and none can avoid them.

"While Nagaland goes to vote today, I urge sisters and brothers of Nagaland to ensure that the peace process that has already been initiated does not face any hurdles," tweeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
As usual Naga militant groups gave statements urging cadres and sympathisers to stay away from 'Indian elections'.

We are back again with the new (also old) club of G-60.

As many as 53 members of the outgoing House have contested this year's Feb 27 polls. Interestingly, 26 of them had shifted to other parties. The presence of parties such as LJP (Ram Vilas) and RPI (Athawale) show die-hard BJP loyalists trying their luck under new party symbols.

Many just contested on different party tickets but will be keen to become minister even from the counting day itself.

'Nagaland Page' link

But the polls in Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura are also the beginning of election frenzy in 2023.

Fierce contests are on cards in Karnataka by April-May and soon there will be battle of EVMs amid heat and dust in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Mizoram and also Telangana.

From northeast perspective, tribal vote is crucial for the BJP and PM Narendra Modi. The saffron party strategists eye bigger share of the cake in 2024 parliamentary polls. In all likelihood, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will have certain roles to play -- politically and with friendly resources - to woo tribal voters to the BJP and the NDA fold.

His friend and NEDA convener Himanta may enlist his assistance now on the electoral battle fields.

Left to them, the Lotus party poll strategists are eyeing around 400 seats. It could appear day dreaming, but

there need not be any family planning norms for such intent. In states like Gujarat, in December polls, the BJP

achieved what was seen as an unreachable target. Even 300 mark in 2019 was like day dreaming.

There also come deep economic and political crises in Pakistan and these may open avenues for more masculine

Hindutva-driven nationalistic jingoism.

The absence of hunger for win in Congress helps BJP boost their ambitions further.

See for instance, popular leader Shashi Tharoor was even deprived opportunity to address election rally at Dimapur. It is motivated strategies like this which has harmed the grand old party more than BJP's so called trump card - the Moditva. On the other hand, BJP works according to its plans.

Even the 'delay' in inking final Solution Pact in Nagaland is linked by some analysts to BJP's Mission 2024.

On this score, the BJP will be eyeing all 25 seats from north east for itself and its regional partners.

Nagaland Lok Sabha seat could be easily handed over to BJP by Rio and he could be even assigned to campaign in states such as Mizoram -- where hard rocks have so far prevented Lotus to bloom.

NNPG Kitovi: Banking on Peace and Modi

Of course, recognising the importance of tribal population -- 8.5 to 9 percent across India, the Modi government has launched PM-Divine scheme with a budget of Rs 6000 crore for development of north east.

The BJP has pledged greater autonomy to Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous Council. In Nagaland by second week of March, ENPO leaders could be landing in Delhi yet again. The saffron party has promised a Development Board for the eastern region already. Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Tuensang and Mon promised that not a comma of what has been agreed will be changed.

For Naga insurgency issue, of course, PM Modi has yet again promised on Feb 24 : "Whatever I have promised to Gaon Burras, I will like to fulfill those".

A section of state leaders is not quite pleased with such statements. One of them considered close to power structures in Kohima even maintained, "I think nothing is expected before five years".

NPF leader K Azo Nienu thinks time is again ripe for opposition-less government. At Chizami, one never know the voters might have just participated in a historical election. Vamuzo as Chief Minister represented them though the fambuoyant regionalist belonged to Chazouba.

Corruption was the main electoral issue in Meghalaya polls even from the perspectives of BJP, which continues to be part of the Conrad Sangma government. But Nagaland is an exception because it is "unique".

CBI arrests Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia in Liquor policy case

Delhi BJP working president Virendra Sachdeva welcomed the CBI decision saying the law is taking its own course.

"We do not intend to speak much on matters being investigated by the CBI for quite some time now. But the law is taking its own course. The Excise policy was designed by the Kejriwal government to loot people, spoil young people's habits and garner profits through kickbacks. It is the beginning of an end for the AAP," Sachdeva told this journalist.

"Manish Sisodia was the mastermind and I am glad he is now behind the bars," Sachdeva added.

New Delhi

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was arrested on Sunday by Central Bureau of Investigation, CBI in an ongoing investigation of a case related to alleged irregularities in framing and implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy.

Sisodia was arrested after hours of interrogation by the CBI  in connection with the now withdrawn Excise Policy 2021-22.  He was summoned for questioning by the agency.

Sisodia

The CBI said that the AAP leader 'gave evasive replies and did not cooperate' with the investigation despite being confronted with evidence to the contrary. Sisodia will be produced before the Designated Court in Delhi.

Earlier, Manish Sisodia was issued a notice for attending the investigation on Feb 19 but he sought one week time citing his preoccupation. The CBI accepted his request and again issued a notice for joining the investigation today for answering various questions evaded by him during his questioning on 17th of October last year.

The CBI said that the instant case was registered against Deputy Chief Minister and  In-charge Excise Minister and 14 others for extending post-tender benefits to private persons.

A chargesheet was filed on Nov 25, 2022 against then CEO of a Mumbai-based private company and six others.

The investigation in the Delhi excise policy case began last year after Delhi Lt. Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena recommended a CBI probe, citing discrepancies in it.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia is among the 15 accused, named in the FIR filed by the CBI. The FIR was lodged for alleged violation of rules and procedural lapses in the Excise policy.

The BJP flayed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over its claims that the CBI is being misused by the Centre.  "Event management can't save AAP from the law," said BJP leader Sambit Patra.

"Manish Sisodia, other AAP leaders never explained why they withdrew the excise policy after corruption was flagged... Delhi excise policy was leaked to liquor-contractor 'friends' by AAP before it was sent to the Group of Ministers," Mr Patra told reporters.

"The AAP spread liquor culture in Delhi and lost liquor money in the election campaign," Patra said.

The CBI contends that liquor companies were involved in framing of the policy, for which kickbacks to the tune of Rs 100 crore were paid by a liquor lobby it dubbed the "South Group". It is estimated the scam or deal gave a 12 per cent profit for them, of which 5-6 per cent were allegedly routed to public servants through middlemen.

The Enforcement Directorate has also launched an investigation, alleging money laundering.

Feb 27 votes: A prelude to chaotic yet watershed Assembly

Will a woman leader enter #Nagaland assembly?

If PM Modi is blessed with Rahul, NDPP is more than lucky for 20:40

"Did PM #Modi forget to take CM Neiphiu Rio's name during Feb 24 speech ?" : A Congress leader

New Delhi

Let there be sudden suspension of greed and fear and let the magic happen. Let Chinese guns, goondaism and Indian currency fail.

Nagaland elections are festival season. We are almost at the end of these festivities. There were a few unfortunate violent incidents and irrespective of party affiliations all gave a befitting fight. Now the focus is on the most significant of protagonists in this democratic drama - the voter.

The grapevine is that some of these votes have been 'purchased', others will prove the prophets of doom wrong. In Dimapur I, people have reconciled to their fate. Can Northern Angami II shock Nagaland? Will NDPP get their best news on March 2 from Tyui?

'Nagaland Page'

In Eastern Nagaland, what would even a single win for NDPP mean in real sense?

Nevertheless, the players were the same - the rich and more rich; and a few from humble stocks. But who knows who has been pulling whose strings?

In Ghaspani I, V Pushika Awomi, reportedly rejected an NPF ticket on the advice of friends and is in the fray as an Independent candidate. In Ghaspani II, JD-U lost Kitoho S Rotokha as he decided to try his electoral luck on LJP (Ram Vilas) ticket.

There were four women candidates --- all could lose and yet people are betting hard for Kahuli Sema of BJP from Atoizu.

There are a few Independent MLAs who could in the ultimate make or break the fate of a so-called stable government. Confident supporters say K Nakhro would make it in Western Angami as Asu Keyho had humbled N T Nakhro (of
Congress) in 1998.

In Southern Angami I also, people are backing Independent Kevipodi Sophie. In Southern Angami II, BJP may do a miracle in Tenyimi belt upsetting NDPP's hidden calculation while another Independent Dr Neisatuo Mero may upset NDPP's Neiba Kronu, a die-hard lieutenant of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, at Pfutsero.

Are we heading towards the emergence of yet another hung assembly?  Will the 'power hungry club' get together with old-new combination of G-60 to form a government that will do its best -- what it has been doing last five years -- the non-performance? Opposition-less means free for all; and accountability less.

Come what may, one question is more vital --- the new Assembly should address the basic issues of Peace and Solution. And so, it is more important than the mere survival of the Chief Minister or who else will be his ministers. Will the same ministers take orders from an unelected man?

The new House of course will have the usual mix of social backgrounds and political hues. But the challenges before it would be formidable and diverse.

Will they debate issues seriously? And how long ? Will they allow Chief Minister of Assam decide the fate of

Nagaland and its leadership?

Each of these issues will require an informed response but the roadmap could not be prescribed by political parties simply interested to get a share of power. Either NPF triumphs or gets dissolved will be decided by voters across many segments but much less than 60.

The survival or performance of BJP will be decided by the fact that it holds power in Lutyen's city and that it has a star vote garnering machine called Narendra Modi. The questions before voters about Congress is should they allow it go for yet another round of zero score. For NDPP -- the saviour is Himanta Biswa Sarma and 20:40 formula.

If Modi is blessed to have Rahul Gandhi as the defacto captain of Congress; the NDPP and its leadership is just more lucky. One remembers M J Akbar -- "In Nagaland payments are made for works done in heaven".

Without Amit Shah's blessings,  the fragmentation of Chingwang Konyak's party was a real danger. Chingwang and his colleague must have done something vital in past lives.

For voters, the option to make a choice is limited. It is not a fight against S C Jamir or the Congress. For once

it is neither a fight against BJP's Hindutva although a mild effort was made by groups inspired by BJP's "friend" from time to time.

Even the Feb 19 mega event did not evoke much public debate. No one even raised 'land' issues in and near Dimapur outskirts during election campaign.

What is in voters' mind will come out at the EVM. Some politicians having had enough of their life and career, but have no appetite to deliver, are still unwilling to give it up is another message from the battle of 2023. Please go out with valid card and cast your vote. One vote will be sum total of all your thoughts and pains.

My best wishes and sincere prayers to all Indian National Congress (INC)Candidates whose fate will be decided tomorrow by the people of Nagaland. May the Lord the Almighty God grant you Peace, progress, prosperity and protection under His wings.

The Lord said , " I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU and FORSAKE YOU."
Onward Congress Soldiers.. march as to war. Regards

Thanks to PM speech, NDPP-BJP should hang heads in shame: Theja

PM Modi in 2017 had assured GBs of inviting NNPGs to resolve Naga Issue

New Delhi

Contradictory to what generally local media and others have stated, eminent social
activist Theja Therieh has said that he will "welcome" Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Feb 24 speech at Chumoukedima vis-a-vis Naga peace talks because though indirect PM said he will keep his words.

"I welcome the Prime Minister's speech and reference to his meeting with the Gaon Burrah Federation. The Nagaland GB Federation leaders specifically had met the Prime Minister for political solution and not for anything else. The NDPP-led regime was not quite pleased about that," Theja told 'Nagaland Page'.

Theja maintained the crux of the Prime Minister's speech was in the line, "Mein Gaon Burrah ko jo wada kiya hae, woh waden pura karna chahta hoon (Whatever I have promised to Gaon Burrahs, I will like to fulfill those)".

He also said the Prime Minister's specific commitment that more stringent steps will be taken against extortion is a "slap" on the Neiphiu Rio-led government. "It is more of an admission about a gross failure as the same Chief Minister is seeking votes again to come back to power and the state Home Minister is BJP's own Y Patton....I feel Modi's remarks on extortion would have ashamed any self respecting Naga leader in power and it is time NDPP-BJP leadership should hang their heads in shame".

"After March 2, when a new government takes charge, more stringent measures will be taken against extortion," the Prime Minister had said.

On the role of Gaon Burrahs, Mr Modi said, "When I had invited the Gaon Burrahs to my home in Delhi and welcomed them, they had blessed me....They blessed me so much and today also (aaj bhi)  they have been continuing to bless me".

Theja clarified, "Maybe some observers and journalists might have missed the point. The fact of the matter is the Prime Minister made his remarks on Naga village elders deliberately and with a purpose. The GBs had played a pioneer role along with Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) to formalise the setting up of the Nagaland National Political Groups (NNPGs) in 2017 and that gave birth to the Agreed Position and Status Paper."

"These are the solid basis to work for the final peace pact which a section of Naga leaders are trying to sabotage utterly for their selfish motives".

It may be mentioned that besides GB body only the NTC as a civil society group had met the Prime Minister with the intent to bring NNPG at the negotiating table.

Theja also recalled, "The NTC met PM after NTC Mediation Committee successfully brought the NNPGs to a common platform and urged the Prime Minister to invite them for inclusive negotiation. This was followed by NGBF meeting with PM on Aug 3, 2017. The Hon'ble PM categorically assured both the delegations that he will invite the NNPGs and resolve the protracted Naga Political Issue for an inclusive solution".

Answering a question, Theja said, "So, my moot point is, if the Prime Minister is sincere to what he has said, he will keep his words and bring in an early solution. This is what people of Nagaland state wants. Even the government of India has acknowledged this on a number of occasions that only disgruntled elements and people from outside are harming and delaying the peace process".

Theja also referred to the state administration serving a notice to an office bearer of GB Federation last year and maintained that such a thing was unheard in the past.

Meghalaya debates job avenues: BJP offers some measures

Shillong

Politicians battling it out with no holds barred has been the hallmark of Meghalaya's political history.

Seldom have they got together to work on genuine issues bothering the people.

This has been perhaps the story in other states in the north east as well.
In the process, many important issues like unemployment have been hardly attended to. Even if some measures were taken up they were following the usual policies and pick and choose and adhocism. And there was the usual menace -- corruption.

The BJP now says, if elected to power after Feb 27 polls, it will establish the much needed Meghalaya Combined Recruitment Commission and expedite the filling up of vacancies in different government departments.

Meghalaya BJP spokesperson M Kharkrang, a former IPS officer, said Meghalaya is the only state that conducts interviews for recruitment to Grade IV posts. Of course, what he has shown is only a tip of iceberg of the problem. Kharkrang is also the saffron party candidate for the prestigious Shillong North assembly
constituency.

'Organiser' report

Needless to add all candidates and irrespective of party affiliations now raise the issue of unemployment. Individually several candidates in Meghalaya have their own way of diagnosis and even offering remedial measures.

L. Michael Kharsyntiew, who was interested in the BJP ticket from Shillong North, says, "No developing society or a nation in the modern world is only looking for government jobs".

"We have a very long line of international border with Bangladesh. We have so many forest and horticulture products. Khasia pan from Meghalaya is sold in London by Bangladeshi businessmen. These avenues need to be tapped".

Congress candidate from East Shillong Manuel Badwar, 42, told 'Organiser' that: "Even soft skills

like making of Parathas could be used for generating jobs and preparing packed food. Most of

these do immense business in Shillong and other places in Meghalaya come from Assam or other

states".

The BJP says it will go for a seamless recruitment policy. Thus, the party promises transparency in the recruitment process under the new dispensation.

Kharkrang says, "We have decided that interviews for recruitment to Grade III and IV posts in various government departments will soon be a thing of the past in Meghalaya".

Kharkrang has also slammed Trinamool Congress and in reference to Mukul Sangma, a former CM, he said, “The leaders of the TMC are the same bunch of people who ruled Meghalaya for eight years before 2018.”

He pointed out that the Trinamool Congress is itself caught in the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment scam and maintained that the Meghalaya Youth Employment (MYE) Card by the Mamata Banerjee-led outfit is only a “false promise” to deceive the voters of Meghalaya.

Meanwhile with regard to jobs - according to BJP MP Ravi Kishan, who campaigned in this north eastern state, the Lotus party in Meghalaya will build a film city.

"Just as the party did in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP will do the same in Meghalaya," he said. Other BJP leaders also maintained that the film industry policy in Jammu and Kashmir can be used as a model for a small hilly state like Meghalaya.

The music and art of Meghalaya could be showcased better through a film city, they say adding this will also
help create jobs for the youths in the state.

From support staff to soundman, to technician a wide variety of job vacancies could be created in the state.
Jammu & Kashmir Film Development Council (JKFDC). Steps will be taken
create and develop "ancillary business opportunities that co-exist with film making".
The Jammu and Kashmir Film Development Council (JKFDC) as a part of 2021 policy decision
shall be the single point of contact to achieve the objectives of the Film Policy in the UT.
Sources say, it shall be authorised to make and issue detailed guidelines, rules, checklist and all required
formats and agreements etc essential to implement the Film Policy, including guidelines for
the disbursement of the subsidy /financial incentives.
Of course a lot of it will depend on the Feb 27 mandate and also how the new government takes up the initiatives
to boost opportunities for jobs in Meghalaya. There are instances engineering graduates are settling for jobs for
payments of Rs 15,000 or so.

In the words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “There is something special about this place. When I think of  Meghalaya, I think of the talented people. I think of the vibrant traditions. I also think of the amazing natural beauty. We are all proud of Meghalaya’s culture.” He made these remarks on Feb 24.

Well, all these need to be nurtured effectively for Meghalaya's development, for prosperity of the local youths and these will ultimately help India excel in scaling new heights of success.

Nagaland polls: Cash for votes is a huge sin, Therie counsels voters

Nagaland Congress pushes 'New alternative" ; voters say "you also failed"

Kewekhape Therie is Congress president in Nagaland and this time contesting polls from prestigious Dimapur I. He is now 70 and during house to house interaction and locality based small meetings, he does not forget to tell people that this could be his last polls.

"Apni khan hi morom koribo....Ami toh bura hoisey," he says. This is not really important but what can be more important is that this is Therie's 10th election.
Some voters get excited when they hear about this and applause him trying to give moral booster to fight sitting MLA and BJP nominee Tovihoto.

Therie follows his personal instinct and does not really care about being politically correct and says, "There is nothing personal against BJP candidate, he is like my son but for political reasons I have to fight him".

Even for Dimapur I voters one thing is clear, the Congress is raising the issue of creating an 'alternative'. However, the impression is becoming stronger that the political parties use the terms Solution and Peace only rhetorically, and no one believes in the process.

Voters do not forget --- the Congress had miserably failed in various governance yardsticks and also to give Solution.

This actually brings entire debates about Dimapur I polls and campaigning to a new dimension.  This assembly segment has in the past been represented by towering personality Hokishe Sema and in 2003 when Dimapur I voters returned veteran Hokishe; the table was turned in the entire state against S C Jamir and the Congress party.

Ten years back in 1993, Hokishe lost to I Vikhishe Sema - an Independent who enjoyed S C Jamir's blessings-- and subsequently the story had gone in favour of Jamir.

Vikheshe's slogan was "People's Choice against the Choice of Delhi". Some things do not really change even in 2023.

Yet again, Dimapur I voters are at crossroads and the big question will they again be a trend setter.

David Rongmei, a resident of Ragailong colony, says, "If you say Nagaland wants change; the same spirit prevails in Dimapur I. The BJP legislator has been representing our constituency for last 10 years and even if we are not against Mr Tovihoto,  we should see Therie gets his last opportunity".

Another voter and a woman at Burma camp says, "Change is the essence of life...Chicken is delicious and good for health but after a while, it is always advisable to opt for vegetarian food".

A veg curry may not be a good alternative to a chicken delicacy, but such a change may be advisable at times. In Nagaland politics, while there is no shortage of complaints and allegation,  there is a big absence of an effective and meaningful political alternative.

As an old school neta, the Congress candidate understands the need to author and anchor a "different script". Selfishness is an over stated and oft repeated malady.

Money changing hands is usual thing during elections and hence Therie says, "This is a very big sin (dangor pap). Of course Therie also knows in this world, who would like to give away people's own resources and power".

This is also linked to political impasse. "It is a matter of deep concern that the state assembly since 2018 did not pass any resolution urging the centre to implement Framework Agreement of 2015 and the Agreed Position of 2017".  Several Congress footsoldiers and those among the crowd give Therie a patient hearing. A few of them could have voted for the BJP nominee in 2018; and thus they whisper to each other-- why BJP hesitated to deliver the solution.

As the meeting ends and this journalist talks to some voters; a few sound sceptical. If Narendra Modi could not deliver, who can - is the refrain.

The discussions go into more deeper issues. Do Naga leaders really prefer Status quo to Solution? So, all talks about peace and solution are only lip service ?

Young Turks of Nagaland

DIMAPUR

They do not belong to the same party. But six of them in 2023 electoral fray have a common thread. They all are 'Young' and they also belonged to so called Anti Corruption campaign in a state where financial defalcation is almost routine -- like normal file works.

Remember former Editor-turned-neta M J Akbar making almost a prophetic statement-- "In Nagaland payments are made for the works done in heaven".

The Young Turk brigade include - T Thomas Konyak for Congress party in Tizit. He is in his twenties and is a qualified engineer. He takes on BJP stalwart Paiwang Konyak.

In Ghaspani II, LJP [Ram Vilas] nominee Kihoto Rotokha also falls in this category and he is pitted against Zhaleo Rio of NDPP and Z Kasheto Yeptho of RPI-A.

NPF nominee for prestigious Zunheboto town constituency is Akavi Sumi. For it's part Congress has Akavi Zhimomi in the same box trying his luck for Ghaspani I and against him is a BJP giant Jacob Zhimomi and also an Independent candidate V Pushika Awomi.

A physically lean and thin Akavi Zhimomi -- often described as Gandhi look alike by K L Chishi - had contested as AAP candidate in 2018 and had polled 6,233 votes as against 23,391 by the victor Jacob Zhimomi.

Interestingly, Ghaspani I could witness an Interesting battle between BJP's Zhimomi and an Independent candidate V Pushika Awomi. There is another intriguing affair in the entire game as reports in constituency suggest that Pushika had reportedly rejected NPF ticket and is now contesting as an Independent candidate.

Grapevine is he was advised by his 'wellwishers' to contest as an Independent candidate. This is a significant episode.

The sixth Young Turk, according to analysts  is Kahuto Chishi Sumi also contesting as Independent candidate in high profile constituency Dimapur III.

Nagaland polls:::: Plenty of money: Famine of leadership

K L Chishi explains electoral Corruption with layers of onion

Dimapur

Unlike him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an unimpressive and average speech at Dimapur.

Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew has been one of my favourite characters. The charismatic leader changed the fate of his tiny nation and his people by insisting on a good sense of balance between discipline and democracy.

In India, discipline is lacking and so called democratic forces including our own left liberals and intellectuals in the media have always spoken about freedom but without discipline and accountability. Leftists promoted trade Unionism but no work culture. The north eastern states followed it up. The work culture made a vanishing act long back.

The Congress encouraged and thrived in corruption. Easy money became legitimate claims. Regional parties in Assam - like the AGP - or in Meghalaya and Nagaland -- most often became more Congress than the Congress.

Party hopping became political culture. Buying votes became accepted norms. The BJP was seen as a party with a difference.

Today the same politicians think common people have gone much ahead in greed. K L Chishi calls them hungry crocodiles; K Therie says cash for votes is a 'dangor paap' -- big sin.

Chishi at this age is becoming more candid and says, "we do not know where we are heading". Voters seem to agree. One Voter in Dimapur III said-- "No one is concerned about Solution to the Naga issue. No one is talking about Development. I am interested in the Bolero".

Long back Henry Kissenger had said that most leaders are not visionary but only managerial.

'Nagaland Page' Link

In Nagaland-- we often say "try to manage'. The language may differ, the story is the same even in Tripura -- onetime communist bastion. In Meghalaya polls, the amount could be insignificant than what is being spent by God fearing candidates in Nagaland -- but money is a major player in polls.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a typical average speech at Dimapur on Feb 24. The compulsion of keeping NDPP and its favourites like the grossly failed BJP Nagaland president happy bothered him much.

But his statement that more stringent actions will be taken against extortionists once the new government is sworn in reflects an admission -- Extortion is a reality. No amount of Himanta Biswa Sarma-friendly tales can make a difference to this agony of people in Nagaland. Who is legitimizing them?

Chishi says in Nagaland elections, money has to be spent at different levels and hence, "I want you to understand the onion layers minutely".

"One has to spend some money first for prayer meetings, informal gatherings etc. Then comes voters' families and then even individual voters ....By 2018 standards people spent more than Rs 1.2 crore yet lost elections because the other side could have spent more".

Coming back to Kissinger, he had said the Leadership should have “the capacity for analysis, strategy, courage and character”. He also believed that leadership is “most essential” during periods of transition.

So, we know where the shoe should pinch. Leadership cannot be purchased and hence there are plenty of political pygmies irrespective of party affiliations. To many of Margaret Thatcher admirers, though she was dangerously "self-opinionated”, she could modernise Great Britain and made it, if not great again, at least a relevant Britain.

In today's situation when votes are purchased and sold; Nagaland should struggle to remain relevant. Leaders will have to be created; they cannot be created by social media jokes nor with oxygen supplied from Assam.

It's called shining in reflected glory. The NDPP and the BJP deserve to be given a mandate that befits them. People of Nagaland should call the bluff.

PM Modi made a lacklustre speech at Dimapur:

"Interestingly, talking about peace and prosperity, the Prime Minister did not mention a word about the vexed Naga political issue, which everyone present at the mammoth gathering at the joint rally of NDPP and BJP at Agri Expo expected to hear about. He only assured the people of the State to fulfill the promises he has made to the Naga people to bring peace and development in the State." - Nagaland Page, Feb 25, 2023

Talking about the decrease in the rate of violence in the Northeast, the Prime Minister said that numerous youths have shunned the path of violence and added that in the last 9 years there is 75% decline in the rate of violence in the State of Nagaland.

Stating that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has been removed from various places in Nagaland, the Prime Minister assured that the Government is working with sincerity to remove the Act from entire Nagaland.

“Permanent progress and peace are the foundation of BJP’s policy in Nagaland:, the Prime Minister said.

He said with BJP and NDA Governments in the Northeastern Region, it has been possible to settle border disputes among different States easily and this has given opportunity for progress and prosperity in the region.

He said after formation of Government in March, strict measures would be taken to curb the menace of extortion in Nagaland.

Russia-Ukraine conflict: One year on, this war will not end soon

Feb 24,2022, it all started and the war is on.

Estimates say more than 7,000 civilians have died, hundreds of them children, and
perhaps over 100,000 Ukrainian military also attained martyrdom. One year on and several experts say there is a fear that a negotiated settlement at this stage would simply provide an opportunity for Russian President Vladmir Putin to "restock and prepare for a renewed assault".

"Russia failed in its lightning strike and then lost land it had grabbed to Ukrainian counter offensives. Mr Putin has united Ukrainians, brought the US back to Europe, strengthened European unity, revivified and expanded Nato," says 'The Guardian' editorial.

The Russian leadership under Putin had presumed that Ukranians and their non-text book variety president would crumble under intense pressure. But Volodymyr Zelensky on Feb 26, 2022 morning posted a video of himself on Twitter.

Russians had even claimed initially that he had fled the war-ravaged country.

But Ukraine’s president emerged from his office unshaven, looked red-eyed and declared: “Good morning to all Ukrainians! There are a lot of fakes out there…[but] I am here.”

Truly, his people have backed him. It goes without stating that the Ukranians have shown astonishing courage and resolve in the face of the brutal Russian actions. But the costs mount by the day Global finance leaders will tally the economic damage from Russia's war in Ukraine as they meet in Bengaluru on Friday on the conflict's first anniversary.

There have been some economic recoveries in recent months. The International Monetary Fund has forecast global GDP growth for 2023 at 2.9%, up from a 2.7% forecast in October 2022. However, this is also well below the 3.4% achieved in 2022. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen highlighted the improvement, saying the global economy "is in a better place today than many predicted just a few months ago".

Experts say the pain has been more intense in emerging economies.

In Egypt, where nearly a third of the population lives in poverty, people suffered for months. It is also said that it could be prudent to draw some consolation; perhaps it could have been worse.

In developed world, however, companies and countries have been resilient and has so far avoided the worst-case scenario of painful recession. There have been issued such as shortfall in supplies of grain, fertilizer and energy. There is inflation and of course the much talked about economic uncertainty.

Notably, Russia also was the top supplier of fertilizer. The Russia-Ukraine conflict

has of course disrupted wheat, barley and cooking oil from Ukraine and Russia, major global suppliers for Africa,

the Middle East and parts of Asia.

Reports also suggested that in Nigeria, a top importer of Russian wheat, average food prices skyrocketed

37 per cent last year. Bread prices have doubled in some places amid wheat shortages.

Reports also claimed that at least 40 percent of bakeries in the Nigerian capital of Abuja

shut down after the price of flour jumped about 200 percent.

Strategic Impact:

The world felt some vital strategic impacts after the conflict.

Needless to add that Ukraine has survived, "unconquered", is possibly the most remarkable outcome.

While in Ukraine's case it is stated that the significant losses of territory has been matched by psychological

triumph, in Asia, India tried to draw an independent foreign policy.

When questioned by members of western media, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar exposed

Europe. He said the continent should come out of the mindset that "Europe's problems are world problems;

but world problems are not Europe's problems".

He also took exception being called 'fence sitter' as the External Affairs Minister said, "Just because I do not

agree to you does not mean, I am a fence sitter. I am actually sitting on my ground".

India is the only country among the Quad which has not condemned Russia.

But the geo-political standing is such that none can easily condemn India in media or in public.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, - “All countries have different levels of engagement with Russia,

other countries in our own region, and so I am respectful of that”.

The US has described India as an 'essential partner'.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price has said: "....we have invested in that relationship (with India) in terms

of our defence and security. So historical relationships notwithstanding, we are a partner of choice for India now, as

are many of our partners and allies around the world".

This perhaps is New India.

On the other fronts, Russian President Putin 'weaponised' energy prices, attempted nuclear blackmail and sought a

closer alliance with China much to the unhappiness of the western powers. Moreover, Europe’s over-dependence on

Russian gas and oil was also exposed.

There is no end in sight to the conflict.

On Friday, Feb 24, 2023, Ukraine President Zeleskiy showed his determination on the anniversary say of the

conflict.

“We have not broken down, we have overcome many ordeals and we will prevail. We will hold to account

all those who brought this evil, this war to our land,” Zelenskiy said on social media.

Meanwhile, Russia launched attacks near Kupiansk, in the eastern Kharkiv region, and Luhansk and Donetsk oblast,

all places where Russian forces have been concentrating their offensive, the reports added.
