Dream finally realised: Home Minister Amit Shah on Assam Rifles HQ 'shift' in Mizoram

Dream finally realised: Amit Shah on Assam Rifles HQ shift in Mizoram

With the relocation of the Assam Rifles headquarters from the heart of the Mizoram capital, a long-standing demand of the people of the state has been fulfilled.

The shifting process was formally completed during a solemn ceremony attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Speaking at the function held on the occasion at the Assam Rifles Ground, Shah described the event as "historic" and a moment of great significance for Mizoram.

"The dreams of the Mizo people for over 35 years have finally been realised with the relocation of Assam Rifles from Aizawl's urban area to Zokhawsang," Shah said.

The Assam Rifles is under the operational control of the Indian Army. Its Aizawl establishment has moved to Zokhawsang, 15 km from the state capital.

"Due to limited space, the development of Aizawl has not happened. To develop Aizawl hill town, the shifting of the Assam Rifles establishment was necessary. It is an administrative decision, taken after Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed interest," Shah said.

"The BJP-led central government is committed to working for all-round development of the northeast region. Since Independence till 2014, prime ministers have visited only 21 times. But after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, he visited the northeast 78 times in 10 years," the Home Minister said.

"In the last 10 years, central ministers visited states in the northeast region 700 times."

Chief Minister Lalduhoma tweeted:

"Today, I attended a historic event at Sector 23 HQ Assam Rifles, Khatla, Aizawl, marking the relocation of Assam Rifles from the city center to Zokhawsanga. The occasion was graced by Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah, whose support made this long-awaited transition possible.

"I expressed my gratitude to Shri Amit Shah, acknowledging his role in shaping Mizoram’s history, and appreciated the contributions of Lt. Gen. Vikas Lakhera, Union Home Secretary Shri Govind Mohan, and IB Director Shri Tapan Deka in ensuring the success of this move.

"This relocation is a crucial step in Aizawl’s urban development, addressing its infrastructural challenges as a growing city. However, Mizoram remains committed to maintaining strong cooperation with Assam Rifles for the state’s security and stability."
