Revolt in the air ! Congress is weak, says Sibal

"Ghulam Nabi Azad is indispensable"

New Delhi: Days after Congress dumped veteran parliamentarian Ghulam Nabi Azad, there is a considerable section in the grand old party which says Azad is 'indispensable' for the revival of the Congress, which has 'weakened' under Sonia-Rahul Gandhi duo.

“Now, what is the real role of Ghulam Nabi Azad… we need an experienced pilot to fly a plane and an engineer to fix any technical snag. Azad is an experienced pilot and an engineer too," said Kapil Sibal, a former Union Minister and often described as a trusted aide of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

The Congress dissidents' event at Jammu on Saturday, Feb 27, is also seen as a stage setting for 'revolt' against the Congress leadership though the rebel leaders deny any such possibility.

Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma, former Union ministers Kapil Sibal and Manish Tewari, former Uttar Pradesh Congress chief and actor Raj Babbar, and head of the party’s legal and human rights cell Vivek Tankha reached Jammu providing the much needed support to Azad.

The Congress leadership replaced Azad, a Muslim and a former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, as Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha earlier this month. The Congress leadership has brought in Mallikarjun Kharge in Azad's place perhaps trying to give some message to Dalits.

Meanwhile, the 'Congress dissenters' - who were part of the so called 'Group of 23' have said that they all landed in Jammu in response to an invite from an NGO, the Gandhi Global Family Foundation. "We are in the Congress and all our efforts are aimed at strengthening the Congress," said one of the leaders who landed there.

The G-23 leaders of Congress had written an open letter to party president Sonia Gandhi last year demanding sweeping changes in the Congress.  Speaking at the event at Jammu, Sibal said: “This is an occasion and podium to speak truth and the truth is that Congress is getting weak and therefore we have assembled here to make it strong together".

Sibal, also a Rajya Sabha member, did not mind disapproving the manner Azad had been virtually sent on a forced retirement. "....when we realized that Azad is being freed from Parliament we felt sad. We never wanted him to be freed from Parliament”.

Making his missive and the spirit of the same crystal clear, Sibal further said: Gulam Nabi Azad knows the reality of the Congress in every state and district.
Ironically, the meet at Jammu has been ceremoniously called Shanti Sammelan.
It may be recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave an emotional speech and his voice got choked when he lauded Azad's Parliamentary contribution and more specifically his stint as the Chief Minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ghulam Nabi Azad was furious last monsoon when he heard that Rahul Gandhi had said the letter from 23 Congress leaders on his 'performance' was handiwork of the BJP.

Azad had offered to quit. Much to the embarrassment of Sonia Gandhi and something 'exposed' Rahul Gandhi, the 23 Congress leaders had sought a complete overhaul of the Congress party.

In his speech at the Jammu event on Feb 27, Azad said:“We are not against anyone or any leader. We are working for the Congress and to strengthen it. There are many who are trying to divide the nation. We are looking to develop the nation".

“In the last five-six years, all these friends (party leaders) did not speak any less than me in the Parliament over Jammu and Kashmir, its unemployment, stripping off of statehood, finishing off industries and education, implementation of GST," he said.

Look who is batting for Trinamool in West Bengal !

Look what he says, and can we not conclude that the Marxist leader is admitting that in West Bengal, onetime the red bastion, the real battle is between the Trinamool Congress of Mamata Banerjee and the BJP !!

CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury  says:“The anti-incumbency against the TMC government is feeding the BJP".

He also urged the Election Commission to explain the reason(s) for announcing the eight-phase polling in West Bengal.

The poll schedules announced on Feb 26 say Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pudducherry will wrap up the entire voting process in a single day. Of course, the BJP-ruled Assam will also have three phases.

"Modinomics: More destruction of the economy. Greater miseries for people. Defeat BJP in forthcoming assembly elections," Yechury tweeted.

“These elections are going to be crucial. The overall objective today is to keep BJP at bay, which is making all unscrupulous attempts in order to capture power in these states. In Bengal, the basic alternative that is emerging, on the strength of the people’s struggles in the past few months, braving the repression of TMC government is the secular democratic alliance of Left-Congress,” he said.

The Marxist leader exuded confidence that his party-led LDF will return to power in Kerala.

Meanwhile, CPI (ML) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya in a tweet said, “Five-day test match in Chennai becomes a two-day affair in Ahmedabad. One-day election in Tamil Nadu gets stretched over eight phases in West Bengal. Can any of you explain this numbers game?”

Legislative Assembly elections for 294 seats of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly are scheduled to be held between 23 March to 29 April 2021 in 8 phases.

Ruling BJP’s estranged ally Bodoland People's Front (BPF) has decided to contest all the 12 seats in the Bodoland area in Assam in the upcoming assembly election.

A season of optimism along Indo-Pak LoC, but there is always need for CAUTION

The Government of India has said in Parliament that the circa 2020 witnessed 5,133 ceasefire violations as compared to 3,479 in 2019 and 2,140 in 2018.
The official data says 221 terrorists were eliminated in 2020, 153 in 2019 and 215 in 2018. The incidents led to deaths of 22, 18 and 30 civilians, and 24, 19 and 29 security personnel respectively. As per military sources, the two months of January and February 2021 have itself seen 591 crossfire violations.

And now comes a ceasefire announcement!

Pakistani security experts and the US have welcomed the new initiatives.

".....Doing so (the ceasefire) will save innocent lives so no one should question the intent. Nor should wrong inferences be drawn. There is nothing more than meets the eye here," tweeted Moeed Yusuf, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s special assistant on National Security and Strategic planning.

White House welcomes Indo-Pak Ceasefire announcement, "Our position remains unchanged," insists India

New Delhi: The United States on Friday welcomed the joint statement between India and Pakistan on ceasefire along the Line of Control.

"This is a positive step towards greater peace and stability in South Asia, which is in our shared interest and we encourage both countries to keep building upon this progress," said White House spokesperson Jen Psaki.

India has meanwhile asserted that while there is no doubt it "desires normal neighbourly relations" with Pakistan, but it also has made clear on key and contentious issues New Delhi's position remains "unchanged".

"India desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan. We have always maintained that we are committed to addressing issues, if any, in a peaceful bilateral manner. On key issues, our position remains unchanged. I don’t need to reiterate it," MEA spokesman Anurag Srivastava told reporters here on Thursday.

It is understood that NSA Ajit Doval, also a trusted aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had initiated a back channel communications with Moeed Yusuf, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s special assistant on National Security and Strategic planning.

Springing a major surprise, on Thursday morning, India and Pakistan agreed to observe a ceasefire along the
Line of Control after talks between senior military officials through a hotline.
The rare joint statement was issued by the Directors of Military operations of the two countries.

Moeed Yusuf of course denied his involvement in the entire episode and tweeted: "Obviously these are by their very nature not in the public eye and done privately and professionally through the direct channel".

"I have seen claims by Indian media that attribute today's ceasefire announcement between Pakistani and Indian DGMOs to back-channel diplomacy between me and the Indian NSA. This is baseless. No such talks have taken place between me and Mr. Doval," he wrote.

Meanwhile, on matters related to SAARC and neighbouring countries on health and Covid-19, MEA spokesman
Anurag Srivastava said - "A workshop on ''Covid-19 Management: Experience, Good Practices and Way Forward'' with 10 Neighbouring Countries was held on February 18, 2021 which was addressed by Prime Minister Modi.

Among other things, PM proposed a special visa scheme for doctors and nurses, a regional Air Ambulance agreement for medical contingencies, creation of a regional platform for collating, compiling and studying data about the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines among our populations and creating a regional network for promoting technology-assisted epidemiology for preventing future pandemics."

"These proposals were very well-received by the participating countries and follow-up action is being taken in consultation with concerned ministries," he said.

On LAC talks, he said - "The 10th round of the Senior Commanders meeting was held on 20 February 2021. As agreed earlier by the two sides, the 10th meeting was convened within 48 hours of the completion of disengagement in the North and South Bank of Pangong Tso."

Srivastava said - "The two sides had candid and in-depth exchange of views on the remaining issues along the LAC in the Western sector. Both sides view the smooth and successful completion of disengagement in the North and South Bank as a significant first step as this forms a basis for resolution of remaining issues so as to achieve the eventual goal of complete disengagement in all friction areas".

The two sides have agreed to work towards a mutually acceptable resolution of the remaining issues, he emphasised.

Weakening of Indian Communists signals rise of religious fanaticism

The downward journey of Indian communists - electorally and also in exerting influence in the country's socio-political mindset - has been phenomenal during the last decade.

And the states where they lost power or losing grip somehow - either the BJP had come to power as in Tripura or are gaining ground significantly as in West Bengal and Kerala.

Kerala’s communist leader and current chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, refuses to move along the stricter communist path the comrades walked in Tripura and West Bengal. Critics say Vijayan has already tinted the red flag of the communists with the hues of saffron, the color associated with Hindus. In other words, he has taken care not to offend Hindus with his so-called reformist and progressive communist ideas.

One example is the state dropping the idea of pressing for the entry of women of reproductive age into a popular temple against its tradition. Vijayan’s government pushed for the entry of all women to the temple following a Supreme Court order favoring it two years ago. Massive rallies, supported by the BJP, followed, forcing Vijayan to leave the issue silently.

The Leftist parties’ ouster from power in Kerala, the only state where they now run the government, will perhaps wipe out communism from Indian politics.

The Marxist-led Left Front lost power in their one-time stronghold West Bengal in 2011 after ruling the state for 34 years at a stretch. In 2018, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) lost power in yet another small state, Tripura, which has a sizable number of native Christian tribal people.

Vijayan is also trying to gain the support of Hindus and Christians, notwithstanding their ideological indifference to the politics of religion. The reported growth in influence of radical Islamic forces in Kerala and the government action to check it should gain some support from Hindus and Christians. The leftists may describe this appeasing of religion as pragmatism. But pragmatism, as they say, is often a good political substitute for sheer naked opportunism.

It was Kerala communists’ pragmatism that led them to accept democracy and to install the world’s first elected communist government in the state in 1956. From then on, communists have become part of the electoral battle in India. As they weakened in states, they also failed to win seats in the national parliament. In the 2019 general election, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) could gain only 1.7 percent of polled votes and just three seats in the 543-seat house. In the previous election in 2014, they had nine seats, and in 2009 16 seats.

What does this gradual weakening of Indian communist forces indicate? One straight takeaway is the decline of secular ideology in the country. The communists could be anti-religion, but they have long been the real custodians of a secular polity where nearly 80 percent of its 1.3 billion people are Hindus.

The electoral data in the last 15 years — of the three national elections and numerous state elections — clearly shows not only the weakening of communists but also the rise of the BJP, particularly in states like West Bengal and Tripura. We see the same trend now in Kerala.

In other words, the weakening of communists signals more opportunities for the rise of Hindu nationalism, something that leaves religious minorities, Muslims and Christians nervous and worried. One of the major fears among religious minorities and a section of left-liberals has been that the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi could change the constitution to discard the parliamentary system and give a major push to make India a Hindu Rashtra (nation).

Will the leftists remain relevant in Indian politics? The possibility of Christians and Muslims backing communists against the BJP is ruled out. These religious communities cannot support atheism-based political outfits and the Church maintains a policy of not supporting any political party. The god-denying communists also cannot seek votes on religious lines.

The sociopolitical situation has driven them to restart negotiations with the Congress party for an alliance for the 2021 state polls in West Bengal. Here they need to fight two formidable rival parties — the BJP and a regional outfit named Trinamool (Grassroots) Congress.

"The worry is bigger as most BJP votes come from former leftists. The communist leaders do not seem to have discovered any great electoral strategy to win back their support base," says political observer Vidyarthi Kumar.

Ramakant Sanyal, a political analyst in West Bengal, says if the leftists “cannot do well this time, they face the chances of losing their very relevance. They have been out of power in the state since 2011.”

A sizable number of communist leaders in West Bengal believe that the BJP is a bigger enemy than Trinamool Congress. Thus the leftists may even work out some post-poll arrangement with Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, who was instrumental in dethroning the communists in the state.

In Kerala, Vijayan is accused of indulging religion-based tactics in his desperation to win this year’s state election. He reportedly made anti-Muslim statements trying to bolster electoral prospects among Christians and the majority Hindu base.

In a Facebook post, Vijayan said a rival Congress alliance partner, the Indian Union Muslim League, is gaining prominence in state politics. It is alleged the statement aims to get the support of Hindus and Muslims, which could lead to religious polarization in the state.

This happens at a time when the BJP is vigorously pushing radical Hinduism to make deeper penetration in Kerala.

Vijayan’s government has been slowly implementing a court order on the age-old dispute between the two Christian factions — the Orthodox and rival Jacobite. The court order asked to take over more than 1,100 churches from the numerically stronger Jacobites and hand them over to the Orthodox outfit. It is argued that not implementing the order helped the communists in the December civic body polls.

Of course, such sheer opportunism of the left is being exploited by BJP leaders, who showed an interest in helping the warring Christians find peace. They arranged for leaders of the Orthodox and Jacobite factions to meet Prime Minister Modi, seeking his intervention. Presenting Modi as a prime minister interested in the well-being of Christians could help the BJP gain ground among Kerala Christians.

The double standards of communists, who preach secularism but practice communal politics while terming it pragmatic politics, have been the reason for their destruction. The erstwhile champions of the working class, the peasants and the poor have lost track. The Indian communists are just another political party trying to win elections, with little difference from other parties like the BJP. The only difference may be in scale.

Recently, state Chief Minister and veteran Marxist Pinarayi Vijayan (76) in a Facebook post accused that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is getting prominence in state politics.

For many, such statements may put Kerala into a roadmap of religious polarisation.

The Left Democratic Front under a Marxist Chief Minister has been very slow implementing a court order

on age-old dispute between the Orthodox and rival Jacobite faction.

It is argued that not implementing the order had actually helped the communists in a recent civic body polls held

in December 2020.

Of course such sheer opportunism of the Left is being exploited by the BJP now.

Both the rival factions the Ortthodox and Jacobite had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought his intervention.

This could ultimately help BJP gain ground among Kerala Christians.

The Jacobite, and Orthodox factions have been in confrontation since 1912 and media reports say more than 300 churches were closed as a result of litigation and violence. But the communists - otherwise which has a history of championing polity of communal harmony - did not do much to resolve the issues or even implement a court order.

Such double standards could be called pragmatic politics on one hand, but the harsh reality is these imply there is no much difference between other parties like BJP or the Indian communists. Only difference may be in scale!

With regard Bengal elections, some analysts say the Leftists may increase their vote share and this could create problems for the BJP to wrest power in the 294-member assembly. Does a good performance by Congress-Left alliance actually mean 'Split' in anti-incumbency votes in Bengal remains to be seen.
