In a strongly worded statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) underscored that efforts to undermine India's standing as a beacon of democracy and tolerance would not succeed. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the latest USCIRF report continues its pattern of issuing "biased and politically motivated assessments".
New Delhi asserted that the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) should be designated an "entity of concern" as it rejected its report suggesting minorities were facing deteriorating treatment in the country.
The US panel recommended the Donald Trump administration designate India as a "country of particular concern" for religious freedom violations.
Tensions emerged between the two countries after the US charged a former RAW agent, Vikash Yadav, in connection with a foiled plot to murder Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. India has washed its hands of the incident even though the Khalistani issue has been a thorn in its ties with nations like the US and Canada.
