July 24, 2026 - A nervous 'Neiphiu Rio' regime in "inaction" !! ????
A meeting was proposed for July 24 (afternoon). A Govt document says :
"A meeting of the cabinet sub committee on Oil and Natural Gas Exploration and Production is to be held ..... in 'new capital complex'.
By 2000 hours; as I rang some friends in Rio-administered Kohima; the response was -- "None is sure whether any such meeting took place ... and if at all some gathering and discussion took place --- they are tied lipped".
Someone who has burnt his tongue by hot glass of milk has to be cautious about Butter Milk or Delhi ka Lassi !!
The real story is Rio was trapped to sign the tripartite pact with GoI and his 'beloved/trusted/ ete etc Himanta Biswa Sarma'.
"The historic MoU between the Centre, Assam, and Nagaland will open a new economic corridor of energy, investment, and prosperity across the entire Northeast" -- declared PIB statement on June 11.
Interested to oblige friends (like this blogger perhaps), family and a galaxy of well wishers in his opposition-less Govt and army of 'free Bolero riders' - Rio readily signed the pact.
Troubles started after most underground groups and NNPGs slammed his decision.
He was still hopeful. Being a 'former chela' of S C Jamir (and an ex friend of K Therie and Neiba Ndang) - he thought "luck" will be on his side.
But Politics has a bad habit. Neiphu Rio's die-hard admirers (guided by Bolero ride) often forget --- that to call Neiphiu Rio a 'great administrator' would be a slap in the face for those who have been "extorted" for last 29 years.

Hence, the so-called meeting of the sub committee apparently (or officially) never took place. Not surprisingly, all big shots in the state cabinet are/were part of the panel.
Was it due to fear factor ?
Not curiously enough; but it is true ... the cabinet sub committee meeting 'after announcement' by way of a Circular signed by John Kevi Angami, Commissioner and Secy, was "not held or held in hiding".
All these happened close on the heels of a split in the NSCN-IM and formation of Provisional Eastern Flank dispensation. At the same time; just hours before the cabinet panel's meet; the NNPG led by N Kitovi Zhimomi said:
"Currently, oil and natural gas is in the domain and subject matter of political negotiations. The final inking of Indo-Naga political settlement will determine its exploration and utilisation.
In the meantime, to improve the lives of the Naga people, the Govt of Nagaland must bring funds from New Delhi, build infrastructure...".
This is truly a testing time.
If anything, Konyaks, Aos, Lothas and Sumi etc etc ... must take a joint decision since the oilfields fall under these belts.
