Delhi drops cases against CJP protesters — but conditional condition

Cops won’t take action ... but protection won’t extend to those with a "criminal past"  

CRPF chief Gyanendra Pratap Singh tells his force -- he would own bona fide decisions taken on duty. 

His assurance came as the Delhi protest action faces internal scrutiny.

The Delhi government on Thursday approved the withdrawal of 13 FIRs registered in connection with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar. It said no action will be taken against those involved in the protests, but made it clear that the protection would not extend to those with criminal antecedents.

“As of 6 pm on 29.07.2026, a total of 13 cases were registered by Delhi Police in connection with the protests relating to the alleged irregularities in the NEET (UG) examination… 

No adverse legal action will be taken by… police authorities within the national capital against those persons who have been involved in these protests,” read the note undersigned by Principal Secretary (Home) Santosh D Vaidya.

The protection, however, will not extend to persons having criminal antecedents, as mandated in the Supreme Court order, it added.

In a significant development Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Director General Gyanendra Pratap Singh has assured jawans and officers that he will stand by every bona fide decision taken in the discharge of their duties and take responsibility wherever accountability arises.  

"Whatever decisions and actions you take in the bona fide discharge of your duties, I take responsibility for them," Singh said addressing personnel at the CRPF investiture ceremony on July 27.   

He also told the force, "Continue to perform your duties fearlessly; do not hesitate while carrying out your responsibilities".

Stressing institutional backing for field personnel, he added, "Wherever responsibility or accountability needs to be taken, I will take it as the Director General of the CRPF".

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered the release of “children under the age of 18, who have been reported to be arrested or detained in connection with the ongoing protests and who do not possess any criminal antecedents”.

The bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana said, 

“The NCT of Delhi and other States may proceed with the investigation of the FIRs registered; however, no coercive measures shall be taken against the protesting students. 

Such protection, nonetheless, shall not be extended to the persons with criminal antecedents.”

The Delhi government further said that it does not propose to take any further adverse action against the individuals involved in the protests and 

the “matter shall be treated as closed without any future proceedings on this account”.

The CJP had earlier alleged a “complete breach” of the understanding reached with the Centre on July 25, pointing to the arrest of “hundreds of students” in BJP-ruled states.

CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka had said, 

“We demand that all FIRs against protesters be immediately withdrawn, students be released, and no fresh FIRs be filed (in line with our agreement) by the Delhi Police, central investigative agencies, or police in BJP-allied states. Failing this, we will be forced to resume our protest…”

The ruling BJP’s Bihar and Assam governments later confirmed that charges will be dropped and protesters detained before 6 pm on July 26 will be released.
