Vidarbha has traditionally been a BJP stronghold
Shaking off its dismal performance in the Lok Sabha in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region, the BJP-led Mahayuti has taken a massive lead in the agrarian belt making a big factor for BJP and NDA's win.
The Mahayuti is ahead in over 40 of the 62 Assembly seats in Vidarbha, which is home to a large chunk of both large- and small-scale farmers.
Vidarbha, which has the second-highest number of Assembly seats after western Maharashtra, holds the key to government formation. There is no doubt that the road to the Maharashtra throne goes through Vidarbha.
Despite being a BJP stronghold, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) of Uddhav faction, Congredd and NCP sprung a surprise in the Lok Sabha polls, winning seven of 10 constituencies, with the Congress securing five of them. The Mahayuti won only three seats.
In the 2014 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the BJP won 44 of the 62 seats in Vidarbha. The Congress won 10 seats. In the 2019 Assembly polls, the BJP saw its numbers dip, winning 29 seats, while the Congress bagged 15 seats in Vidarbha.
Vidarbha is home to prominent BJP leaders like Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Congress state chief Nana Patole.
Fadnavis is contesting from the Nagpur South-West constituency, while Nana Patole is in the fray in Sakoli.
The BJP contested the highest number of seats (47) in the Vidarbha region.
Vidarbha, which has one-fifth of the state population, also has a significant population of Dalit, Maratha, Kunbi, and Muslim communities.
The opposition MVA had raised issues like reservation, soybean prices and the MSP for crops to attack the ruling party during the poll campaign.
The opposition had also raised the high number of farmer suicides in the region to corner the Mahayuti government. According to data, Vidarbha recorded the highest number of farmer suicides in 2023, with 1,439 cases.

JMM-led INDIA bloc appears set to retain power in Jharkhand
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has taken a massive lead in Maharashtra, shaking off its dismal performance in the state in the Lok Sabha polls, show trends. On the other hand, the ruling JMM-Congress alliance in Jharkhand defied exit poll projections and crossed the halfway mark.
In Maharashtra, the ruling Mahayuti alliance—comprising the BJP, Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction, and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena—sailed past the halfway mark, leading in 220 seats. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was ahead in 55 seats in the 288-member Assembly, where the majority mark is 145.
Jharkhand witnessed a pitched battle initially, but the ruling coalition led by Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) eventually went past the majority mark of 41 in the 81-member assembly, with leads in 48 seats. The NDA, ahead in 31 seats, was shaping up to be a distant second.
.
As the MVA alliance stared at a crushing defeat, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut rejected the results as "rigged".
"Has any party in this state ever gotten 200 seats? This cannot be the decision of the people of Maharashtra. If MVA cannot win 75 seats, that means Modi and Shah have rigged the results. This is a mandate managed by Adani and gang," Raut claimed.
In individual contests, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar were leading in their respective constituencies of Kopri-Pachpakhadi, Nagpur South West, and Baramati, respectively.
Aaditya Thackeray (Shiv Sena UBT) was leading in Worli, while Congress state president Nana Patole was ahead in Sakoli. However, senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan was trailing in Karad South.
In Jharkhand, the INDIA bloc, led by Hemant Soren’s JMM, pulled off a surprising turnaround, edging past the BJP-led NDA in a closely fought race.
The JMM-led coalition was on course to form the government for a third time, proving wrong exit polls which predicted an NDA victory.
Meanwhile, in the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll, debutante Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was leading by over 3 lakh votes.
