Opposition-less NLA must reconcile with truth & realities : Therie
New Delhi
Former Nagaland pradesh Congress president and an ex-Minister Kewekhape Therie has said that had the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) not intervened in the 1950s, "many more Nagas would have died of starvation in the forest".
"Nagaland could have also still remained a Hill district under Assam. We are grateful to NPC and Pt Jawaharlal Nehru for the Statehood and Article 371 A," Therie told this blogger over phone.
He said, "The realisation and vision of Naga Club and NNC earned the recognition of the uniqueness of Naga way of life".
To a question, he said, "There is no more any contest between the philosophy of violence and non-violence. We have opted for non-violence to resolve the Naga issue.
The state Govt of Nagaland should not be a source of conflict".
He further said Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio "talking or vowing to fight for Naga Integration at this juncture when everything has been discussed and debated for the last so many years is unfortunate".
"Rio vowed to fight for integration in his speech on the occasion of 60th Anniversary celebration of the assembly. The Nagaland state Govt shouldn’t be a source of conflict".
"Since the negotiations have concluded, there is no scope to improve the present status of Statehood and Article 371 A....Thus everyone should reconcile with Statehood and Art 371 A and allow the State Govt to exercise its powers under Constitutional provisions," he said.
"The Opposition-less Nagaland Legislative Assembly should reconcile with the truth and realities," he stressed.
In a rather angry tone he said, "The cowardice of some leaders and opposition-less Govt is the reason that Nagaland people are suffering constant humiliation".
To a question, Therie said - "I am a witness to the situation of 1956-57 genocide conducted by armed forces. My village was burnt on August 12, 1956. Zhietsünyi Kada was burnt alive. Animals and paddy were all burnt. I lived in the forest with my parents and two younger brothers eating grass"
Therie said -" We must also take note that Eastern Nagas known as NEFA then joined the Naga movement in 1957. Tangkhus too came late. Some complain the time was too short.
Ramyo Zimik joined NNC/FGN sometime in 1964 and Thuingaleng Muivah joined in 1965 after Ceasefire in 1964".
He maintained, 'It is really unfortunate that the noble political movement of Nagas later turned violent against self and own people".
He also said that legendary A Z Phizo left Nagaland and India "assuring to mobilise help" to liberate Nagaland during 1958-59.
"In the meantime," he added, "Naga leaders who believe in non-violence constituted the Naga People’s Convention.
In its third meeting at Mokokchung the 16 Point Charter of Demand was decided".
"Indeed, we have come a long way," he said adding, "the founding fathers of Nagaland ought to be respected by all and sundry".
On this backdrop, he said a recent article by a former Indian Accounts and Audit Services (IAAS) officer lambasting 93-year-old S C Jamir is uncalled for.
"The article 'Nagaland where Light becomes Darkness' reacting to Celebration of 60th Anniversary of NLA has hurt the people of Nagaland. Ninety percent or more participate in the state election and we are proud of Art. 371 A. It gives freedom of inherent social practices".
Therie, who also served the Jamir cabinet, maintained: "The allegation and the blame showered upon our esteemed leader Dr S C Jamir are uncalled for and unwarranted. The vomit is bereaved of historical facts and ignorance of background. These records need to be set straight".
