SICKULARISM brigade got a shock. Overestimation of Bharat Jodo Yatra and the protagonist Rahul Gandhi has backfired !!
The assembly polls in five states including in Mizoram, Telangana and three Hindi/Hindu heartland states were touted as a semi-final contest ahead of the general elections in just few months. On the BJPs impressive performance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the results indicate that Indians are firmly with politics of good governance.
But what about the 'sickular' brigade ?
Now, an attempt is being made to kickoff a new 'North-South debate ad divide'.
The BJP swept the Hindi heartland states Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh while primary opposition the Congress pulled off a stunning victory in Telangana wresting power from regional party, BRS. A few months back, the Congress had dislodged BJP from power in another south Indian state, Karnataka. Now Congress rules only in one northern state -- Himachal Pradesh.
Now the 'experts (read Sickulars)' have their own interpretation. They suggest people in North India vote 'allegedly for religion' -- that is Hindus and the BJP ... while in the South, issues are prioritised -- intellectually thought of etc etc. The debate was fueled DMK MP DNV Senthilkumar when he compared the northern states with the Gau-mutra (cow-urine) region.
The Prime Minister sought to caution the citizens and hence he wrote, "May they be happy with their arrogance, lies, pessimism and ignorance. But.. Beware of their divisive agenda. An old habit of 70 years can't go away so easily. Also, such is the wisdom of the people that they have to be prepared for many more meltdowns ahead".
On Dec 6th, Wednesday, the Lok Sabha witnessed a brief uproar over DMK MP, N V Senthilkumar’s remarks on Hindi heartland states calling them "Gau-mutra states". Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal demanded an apology from DMK’s T R Balu over his colleague’s “divisive” comments.
Reacting to the flak in Lok Sabha, Senthilkumar expressed regrets over the issue and said “if it (the remarks) hurt sentiments, I withdraw them,”. Of course Under pressure, the DMK leader had on Tuesday (Dec 4) apologised for his remarks in a post on X.
Poll strategist-turned-activist Prashant Kishor on December 4 argued that the BJP’s victories in the recent elections go beyond relying on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s image, adding that Opposition parties must first understand the saffron party’s strengths in order to 'defeat' it.
Kishor said, “The four reasons BJP got votes and won poll in three States are: first, Hindutva which is their [BJP] ideology; second is the new Nationalism; third is BJP’s financial and organisational muscle power, and the fourth is Lavarthi Yojna (beneficiaries programmes) of the party.”
EVM row !!
"My personal opinion about the EVMs remains unchanged. I have full confidence in the EVMs. I know many of party colleagues have different opinions but I personally have always been very confident about the EVMs," says Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram on Congress leaders blaming EVMs for party's dismal performance in 2023 Assembly polls.
"They (opposition) will raise questions over everything, including EVMs, following their loss. Congress, JD(U) and Samajwadi Party would have anyway lost the Madhya Pradesh elections even if they had contested together," says BJP MP Sushil Modi
