Shivraj Singh Chauhan: 'Mamaji' holds his forte pretty well....
Of course, Shivraj Singh Chouhan now credits Amit Shah's "micro management" for BJP's spectacular success in Madhya Pradesh, but there is no second thought that the people of central Indian state once known as a BIMARU state and also with poor roads and 'darkness of power crisis' have rewarded Chouhan, who perhaps became CM in 2005 rather by accidents.
This is not for the first time, Shivraj has surprised his foes and friends alike. Well, the detractors had to 'eat back their words' in 2008 also when Chouhan had led his party to a victory bagging 140 seats in the 230-member House.
In 2008, in contrast to BJP's hyped campaign about terrorism and inflation, Shivraj Chouhan had won a second term by doing enough to convince his electorate he would continue to strive for Bijli, Sadak and Pani, the slogan on which BJP rode to power in 2003 dethroning Congress stalwart Digvijaya Singh's 10-year rule. Chouhan's elevation as Chief Minister in November 2005 was purely coincidental as then incumbent man Babulal Gaur was not acceptable to Uma Bharti and as a compromise candidate BJP central leadership sent Chouhan, then Lok Sabha MP, to take over the reigns.
Sanyasini turned neta Ms Bharti nevertheless quit BJP to float her outfit and threatened to oust BJP. Thus, the run up to the 2008 polls were not a cakewalk. Besides handling internal problems, Uma Bharti winning over saffron sympathizers and allegations of irregularities in allocation of fund for NREGA scheme posed serious challenges. But perhaps the most damning controversy that could have hit the BJP on the eve of elections in Madhya Pradesh, was a video showing Malegaon accused Sadhvi Pragya Thakur alongside Chouhan. At least this is what media thought.
But at the end of the day, Chouhan proved that one who wins the last, has the last laugh. He did so in 2013 and though he was out for a brief 15 months gap; he again came back in 2020; and now this historic mandate.
"We bow to the Janta Janardan. The results in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan indicate that the people of India are firmly with politics of good governance and development, which the @BJP4India stands for," Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on the social network X.
"I thank the people of these states for their unwavering support and assure them that we will keep working tirelessly for their well-being. A special thanks to the hardworking Party Karyakartas. Each of them is exemplary! They have worked tirelessly and highlighted our development agenda among the people," he wrote.
