"Yeh Zeher jo chal raha hae, usko roka kaisa jae (The poison of Communal disharmony that's around; how do we stop it)" ::: Pursuing Harmony and Peace

Pursuing Harmony and Peace is the theme that guides New Delhi-based Institute of Harmony and Peace Studies.

The organisation run by a team dedicated social workers and peace activists released a 10-yearly Souvenir on March 9, 2025.

The Souvenir presents a series of seminars/webinars/conferences organised by the IHPS over the years on the diverse dimensions of fostering inter-faith relations and social harmony.

Maharishi Goswami Sushil Maharaj

Speaking on the occasion, Maharishi Goswami Sushil Maharaj, national convener of Bharatiya Sarva Dharma Sansad, said "violence in the name of religion" is certainly a new and an external element in India.

At the same time he said, we all - individuals and social groups - should be proud of our nation and the national identity of Bhartiyata.

However, he said it is also a fact of life in the contemporary setting - there is violence in the country in the name of religion(s) and people's faith. "Yeh Zeher jo chal raha hae, usko roka kaisa jae

(The poison of Communal disharmony that's around; how do we stop it)", he remarked leaving the gathering stunned and at the same time highly impressed.

He also mentioned about 'harmony' in the context of Akhand Bharat - that is undivided India - and went onto emphasise that the "DNA of the people in Akhand Bharat is the same".

Man behind the show: M  D Thomas being honoured by former Delhi CM Sheika Dikshit

The function was also graced by M Salim Engineer, vice president of Jamaat-e-
Islami-Hind, advocate M P Raju and Dhyanacharya Ajay Jain.

Salim Engineer said it was God's grace that every individual, community and society have been made different. But at the same time, the 'freedom to make choice' is the greatest gift given by the Creator to human race.

Advocate Raju made a powerful speech by his lucid observation on law, constitutional propriety and religion and the meaning of social harmony.

He shared an anecdote to strengthen his argument and said - "if everyone in a village behaves in a peculiar manner, then we may believe that there is some opium or otherwise in the village well itself".

The tale was to drive home the point that the society is like a source for human beings as a 'source of water' is to the stream.

Taking to this blogger, Dr Thomas later said:

"It has been a marathon journey of trying to promote interaction and relations amongst people of all affiliations and communities. But it could be affirmed that this was a fulfilling journey as I found men, women of diverse disciplines and youngsters especially loving the very idea of social harmony," he said adding, "this is the most encouraging part of what once appeared as a thankless job".

"Ukraine can still win the war if it continues ...." :::: Trump suspending US intelligence sharing !!

Donald Trump suspends US intelligence sharing ....

It's ‘suffocating’ Ukraine’s hope, says Ben Wallace

Reporting from Ukraine, Al Jazeera’s Charles Stratford said he had spoken with a Ukrainian commander in a unit close to the front line.

“He said that his unit and many like him right the way along that 1,300km [808 miles] front line in the east and south of Ukraine relied on American intelligence gathering for around 90 percent of the intelligence work that is done,” Stratford said.

“He said that they received no help today and that indeed the Americans seem to have turned that system off.”

Ukraine uses US intelligence for a range of purposes, Stratford suggested – including, for instance, for its Patriot missile system, which is critical to Kyiv’s abilities to knock down incoming Russian ballistic missiles.

The US cut off intelligence sharing with Ukraine days after suspending military aid.

This could blind Ukraine’s military, say experts.

Former UK defence secretary suggests Ukraine can still win the war if it continues holding off Russian forces

Waiting for the last laugh !!

Ben Wallace, the former UK defence secretary, has said Donald Trump’s decision to suspend US intelligence sharing with Kyiv is “suffocating” Ukrainian hope of holding out against Russian aggression.

Last Friday, the US president, along with the vice-president, JD Vance, berated Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office in full view of the media, telling the Ukrainian president that he was “gambling with world war three” and to come back to the White House “when he is ready for peace”.

In the week since, the US stopped sharing intelligence with Kyiv that had previously given advance warnings of attacks and Brussels agreed to a huge increase in defence spending.

On Friday, the day after intelligence sharing ceased, Russia carried out massive ballistic missile and drone strikes across Ukraine. Soon after the aerial attacks, Trump said Vladimir Putin was “doing what anybody would do”.

Wallace, who was the defence secretary when Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, said on Saturday that Trump was diminishing the hope of Ukraine with his actions.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he said: “Hope is the most important thing in this type of conflict and, at the moment, Donald Trump is suffocating the hope that Putin can be either fought to a standstill or indeed brought to the table.”

“Hope is always the key for both morale and a military campaign.

When this started three years ago, I remember gathering the military officials in my then department, and saying on day one, we have to give the Ukrainians hope," he said.

“If a Russian truck has a puncture, we need to let people know. If the Russians have a small defeat, we need to let the Ukrainian people know.”

Wallace suggested that Ukraine could still win the war if it continued holding off Russian forces.

He said: “If Ukraine continues to resist for 18 months, the Russian economy will collapse.

Its inflation rate’s at 23%, it’s spending 40% of its money [on defence], it’s finding it incredibly hard to replace its equipment.

It can use North Koreans like cannon fodder, but fundamentally, it is not in a good place.

Ukraine is not trying to invade Russia and go all the way to Moscow.

Ukraine is trying to defend its sovereignty and its land and there is hope for them. If we were to all step up, either substitute what the Americans have taken away, or indeed show proper European resolve, and in that I include the United Kingdom, that we ain’t going anywhere.”

Leaders in Europe have convened in the past week in response to Washington’s change in stance on the war. Keir Starmer said Europe is “at a crossroads in history” and confirmed that the UK and France would lead a “coalition of the willing” to help end the fighting.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, warned that “the only imperial power that I see today in Europe is Russia” and called Vladimir Putin “an imperialist who seeks to rewrite history” after the Russian president appeared to compare him to Napoleon Bonaparte.

Wallace said: “I’ve seen good leadership from both Keir Starmer and President Macron on this and they should both be congratulated.

Since the war broke out, the US has – in addition to billions of dollars in sophisticated weaponry – shared intelligence with Ukraine using its vast spying capabilities, helping Kyiv both defensively and in plotting attacks on Russian forces.

That came to a halt on Wednesday when US officials confirmed that President Donald Trump had ordered the suspension of intelligence sharing with Kyiv. The move came two days after the US paused military aid to Ukraine, amid souring relations between Trump and Zelenskyy.

So just how much has the US helped Ukraine with intelligence during the war?

How much will the absence of US intelligence hurt Ukraine? And can Europe step up and help Ukraine out?

Yogi Adityanath says massive turnout of devotees at Kumbh silenced critics who mocked religious gathering

Critics said Mrityu Kumbh, devotees showed it's Mrityunjay Kumbh: Yogi Adityanath

Yogi Adityanath said that the massive turnout of devotees at the Maha Kumbh silenced those who had made negative remarks about the religious gathering.

The Maha Kumbh was held at Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26 and saw over 66 corer devotees take the ritual bath at the Sangam in Prayagraj.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said that the overwhelming turnout of devotees at the Maha Kumbh gave a befitting reply to those who labelled the event as ‘Mrityu Kumbh.’

“They called Kumbh ‘Mrityu Kumbh,’ so devotees gave a reply that it’s ‘Mrityunjay Maha Kumbh,’” he said at 'India Today Conclave' in New Delhi.

Recalling the initial scepticism regarding the expected number of attendees at the Maha Kumbh, Yogi Adityanath said,

-- “Before the Kumbh, based on queries from the public, I had said that 40-45 crore devotees would visit. When our friends started spreading negativity, I was sure that the public would teach them a lesson. And that’s exactly what happened.”

Yogi Adityanath further said that the Maha Kumbh has silenced those who made negative comments about Sanatana Dharma or alleged discrimination at the event.

“Those who used to say there was discrimination, those who made negative remarks about Sanatana Dharma, or claimed that there was discrimination between men and womenMaha Kumbh has shut them up,” Yogi Adityanath said.

Highlighting the unity fostered by the event, he said, “Everybody took a bath at one Sangamthe differences between rich and poor, between castes, between regions and languages were all erased. This was for the people of India and for the world.”

Speaking on the larger message of the Maha Kumbh, Yogi Adityanath remarked, “The message of unity is now in front of everyone. And this is the version of Sanatana Dharma that the world saw.”

Tension returns to Manipur as Meitei propose Peace March which has been opposed by Kukis and Paiteis

Tension remained high even as authorities confirmed that the situation is under control.

The fact of the matter tension escalated on National Highway 102, which connects Moreh on the Manipur-Myanmar border to Dimapur in Nagaland.

Security forces denied the passage of a particular community on Saturday.

The restrictions came as a precautionary measure despite the Union Home Minister Amit Shah's earlier announcement allowing free movement on the National Highways in Manipur.

Sources said Police blocked the FOCS peace rally near Imphal War Cemetery and the police have instructed peace march participants to board the government bus for the rally and not to use individual vehicles.

The security forces denied passage at Sekmai in Imphal West and Kanglatongbi in Kangpokpi, although government-sponsored buses, with or without passengers, were allowed to travel with heavy security, primarily from CRPF and CAF.

A peace march, organized by the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) and its allied groups, was allowed to proceed until Kanglatongbi, which is predominantly inhabited by the Kuk Zo community.

Despite prior announcements, the peace rally was halted at Sekmai bazaar in Imphal West. Authorities stated that the group did not have the necessary permission for the proposed peace march.

FOCS president Th Manipur, who led the peace march, announced plans for another march from Imphal to Senapati via Kangpokpi in the coming days.

'Ghar Wapsi' on cards for Team Chingwang ? :::::: Is CM Neiphiu Rio changing the entire dynamics of Nagaland politics ?? Throwing 'royal Angami' challenge

Neiphiu Rio throwing 'royal Angami' challenge to Amit Shah

Will Congress revival start from Kohima ?

The Rio-loyalists may like to believe if the Chief Minister says Sun rises in the west; he may make that happen. Thanks to a passive BJP !!

Long back, Late Chalie Kevichusa as Editor of 'Ura Mail' wrote - "Hey Imcha looks like Vamuzo".

Imchalemba Ao was NPC candidate for the Lok Sabha poll in 1991 but the posters across Dimapur, Kohima and other key political hubs carried the snap of the then Chief Minister Vamuzo.

This episode of the 1990s seems to have come back now to haunt us in circa 2025.

Pause for a while !!

You may all say - "Hey Supong speaks like Rio, behaves like Rio and is also

LUCKY like Rio"

Blessed Naga Neta of the new century !!

Next thing you all might ask is - which Church does Supongmeren pray ?

Or if you think like 'netas of good old days' - Who is Supong's astrolger?

Fortune is favouring him like never before and never like to anyone earlier. Most of it actually generates from Neiphiu Rio's political compulsion.

In 2024, Supong's good luck started the moment he was given Congress ticket. The buzz was K L Chishi was last approached almost with folded hands by Supong and two his 'compatriots'.

One of them people say - is "close" to Chingwang Konyak-led outfit floated in 2017.

Supongmeren Jamir had a cakewalk in the Lok Sabha election and he could humble no less than the NDPP candidate. This electoral feat was unthinkable as Congress had zero MLAs in 2018 and also in 2023 assembly polls.

The talk then was even as Rio was 'smiling' at the poll outcome on June 4 (2024); analysts thought Naga Christians had decided to teach pro-Hindutva BJP a lesson and hence NDPP nominee - poor Chumben Murry was punished.

This is what is called Political Billiard. You hit at one ball but the other ball gets into the net.

Neiphiu Rio is an old Congress hand and for few days during the Lok Sabha voting, he thought - the Luck should favour the Congress nominee.

Supong is a gentleman. Even with worst critic among journos (this blogger in Delhi), he is always courteous to offer lunch and good snacks.

So he could not be disloyal to the NDPP party also. So on July 30, 2024 making his maiden speech in Lok Sabha, he backed the 'pet project' of Kohima district - the new airport.

In Kohima, Chief Minister Rio was again laughing.

The Congress lawmaker pointed out: "Nagaland is the only state whose capital does not have an airport, so I would like to request the government to give the project a priority".

Mortals among journalists - like this blogger - and among Netas - K Therie were (both) puzzled. What is the Congress MP saying?

Rio : Throwing 'royal Angami' challenge to Ami Shah

In the entire process, Neiphiu Rio has also thrown a virtual 'royal Angami' challenge to India's Home Minister Amit Shah.

"I will do hobnobbing with the Congress ... and let's see what can you do".

Secondly, "I will talk of the Naga integration even if everyone else seems to agree that no disintegration of Manipur is possible especially post-2023 violence".

So what even if Naga rebels have almost agreed that Integration is now a resolved issue.

Nevertheless, Supong's 'real well wisher and defacto boss' took note of the duty discharged by the lawmaker.

Come Feb 28th, 2025 - an order on 'Allotment of VIP Quarters' was issued from the Chief Minister's Secretariat -- signed by Additional Secretary - Sentiwapang Aier.

It states : "Quarter No PCCF, Forest Colony, which was earlier occupied by Shri Chingwang Konyak, advisor, may be allotted to Hon'ble MP Lok Sabha, Shri Supongmeren Jamir".

Congrats Supong.

You have created another history !

You are the first MP who has been allotted a VIP quarter in Kohima by the state Government.

Because you hail from NSF background,  I may share with you that a former NSF president and MP of the 9th Lok Sabha Shikiho Sema too was a Congress lawmaker and also PCC president when a regional CM Vamuzo was in power.

Late Shikiho could not even once send a wireless message to the Union Telecom ministry on certain issue once because the Chief Minister had allegedly not given clearance for the same.

That your illustrious predecessor was a ear-on-ground leader and moody at times. He picked up a Naga Dao and used on the speechless wires. Vamuzo later said - "We have forgotten and forgiven Congress MP's goondaism".

In contrast, look at you -  oh boy --- you have done it.

Please invite me for dinner in your VIP quarter and do not forget to invite even the Rajya Sabha MP even as she belongs to the BJP.

What's the small bargain you have done? In far off Ukraine, the helpless President Zelenskyy would like to learn some tricks from you !!

And I can assure that the Team Paphino of NSF of 1990s would be also very proud of you.

Vamuzo: Ever smiling regionalist

There is another aspect in the entire tale. An AICC leader recently visited Nagaland and he suddenly mustered the confidence to claim that in 2028 assembly polls, the Congress will come to power in Nagaland.

Such confidence sounded like joke for many. But if he has drawn the strength from Chingwang-led outfit, he has a reason.

“With my appointment to this new position, our goal is to leave no stone unturned so that by 2028, we can form the government in Nagaland,” Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka had asserted.

The NDPP's alleged hobnobbing with the opposition camp in national politics started the moment some MPs in Rajya Sabha had obliged the Status Quo club and signed a letter addressed to Amit Shah.

The MHA may still be unmindful.

Meanwhile, the talk also is that the Rio-Chingwang combo is in hurry to strike a 'good deal' with the Congress party in Nagaland because soon the AICC may appoint C Apok Jamir as the new pradesh Congress president.

Chandrayaan-3 reveals there could be more water on the Moon than we thought :::: "Presence of accessible ice could serve as a vital resource ....."

Chandrayaan-3 reveals there could be more water on the Moon than we thought.

The Chandrayaan-3 research team, led by Durga Prasad Karanam from the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad, has highlighted the role of large-scale, localised temperature variations in ice formation.

India made history when it landed Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander on the southernmost point of the Moon. It has been hailed as one of the most economical and successful lunar missions undertaken from Earth.

The presence of accessible ice could serve as a vital resource for long-term exploration and potential settlement.

Recent findings from India's Chandrayaan-3 mission have significantly expanded our understanding of lunar ice deposits, suggesting that they may be more abundant and accessible than previously thought.

The mission, which successfully landed near the Moon's South Pole on August 23, 2023, has provided crucial temperature data that indicate ice could exist in more locations beneath the lunar surface, particularly at the poles, says 'India Today'.

These variations are influenced by the Moon's surface properties and solar radiation patterns. The study of ice particles formed under these conditions can offer insights into the Moon's geological history and early geologic processes.

The ChaSTE probe, part of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, measured temperatures from the surface down to a depth of 10 centimeters, revealing highly variable conditions.

Temperatures at the landing site, named 'Shiv Shakti Point,' ranged from 82C during the day to -170C at night.

A model developed by the researchers suggests that lunar surfaces with slopes greater than 14 degrees, facing away from the Sun, could maintain temperatures cool enough for near-surface ice accumulation.

These findings, published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, are particularly relevant for future missions like NASA's Artemis program, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon.

The presence of accessible ice could serve as a vital resource for long-term exploration and potential settlement. However, due to the Moon's ultra-high vacuum environment, ice would sublimate directly into vapor rather than melting into liquid water.

The discovery shows the importance of developing techniques to harvest and utilise lunar ice for future missions. High-latitude areas on the Moon are identified as promising sites for ice deposits, offering fewer technical challenges compared to the poles.

This new understanding of lunar ice distribution could significantly impact the planning and execution of upcoming lunar missions.

India's tough talk on UK-based Khalistani extremists after Jaishankar security breach :::: "There is a larger context to the incident. It is very important to understand"

The government of India said that its assessment of the UK's statement on the security breach during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's London visit depends on the action taken against those responsible.

“While we have noted the statement issued by the UK Foreign Office on the matter, our view of its sincerity would depend on the action taken against culprits on this and previous occasions,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said responding to the UK's statement on the security breach during Dr S Jaishankar's visit to London.

"There is a larger context to the incident. It is very important to understand this.

It brings out both the licence accorded to such forces, as well as indifference to their intimidation, threats, and other actions aimed at impeding our legitimate diplomatic activities in the UK," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a press briefing.

He added that New Delhi has conveyed "deep concern" to the UK authorities about the breach of security.

While Dr Jaishankar was leaving after a talk at the international think tank Chatham House in London, a pro-Khalistani protester attempted to break through barricades and block his motorcade.

Others raised anti-India slogans.

On Thursday, the Keir Starmer government in the UK condemned the attempt by Khalistani extremists, saying any attempts to disrupt public events are completely unacceptable.

This was not the first security breach by pro-Khalistan elements in Britain.

In March 2023, some protesters pulled down the Indian flag at the High Commission in London, prompting a strong response from India.

Following the incident, India had summoned the senior-most British diplomat in Delhi, demanding an explanation for the complete "absence of security" at the mission.

"We strongly condemn the incident that took place outside Chatham House yesterday during the External Affairs Minister's visit to the UK. While the UK upholds the right to peaceful protest, any attempts to intimidate, threaten, or disrupt public events are completely unacceptable," the UK government's foreign office said.

India, in a strong statement following the incident, said it expects the host government to fully live up to their diplomatic obligations in these cases. New Delhi deplored the "misuse of democratic freedoms" by the "small group of separatist" elements.

Later, as a formal protest, it issued a demarche to the British Charge d'Affaires over the incident.

Manipur Imbroglio : Meitei group to hold peace march on March 8, Kukis, Paiteis object :::: "..... witness our fury," says a Paite group

A Meitei group, Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS), has announced that it will hold a 'peace march' from the Meitei-stronghold Imphal to Senapati on March 8.

This also follows Home Minister Amit Shah's call for free movement in Manipur that witnessed fierce and unprecedented ethnic violence between Kukis and Meiteis in 2023.

FOCS President Th Manihar said the march is not directed against the Kuki community.

Meitei civil group calls for 'peace march' to the hill districts

"We are not going to attack or fight the Kuki community. We are going for peace and prosperity in Manipur," he said.

Three Kuki groups have objected to the rally, calling for separate administration. Despite their opposition, FOCS has decided to proceed with the march and has urged Kuki groups to support it.

"Three Kuki organisations have objected to our proposed march. We appeal to them to join us in this effort for peace. The march is also a way to see if the Centre stands by its commitment to allowing free movement," Manihar told the Press Trust of India.

Manihar said the Home Minister recently held a meeting with senior security officials in New Delhi. He said four key decisions were made regarding Manipur, including ensuring free movement on all roads.

Larger tribal groups, including the Committee on Tribal Unity, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, and the Hill Council, have not opposed the rally.

FOCS also plans to extend the march to other parts of the state. Dates for those events have not been decided.

A prominent Paite (falling under Kuki-Zo family) group has objected to the peace march.

In a statement under the title 'A GRAND WELCOME TO YOU',  the Paite Tuailal Pawl in a statement from Lamka said - "Step into Lamka, Zogam at your own risk and peril".

It further said - "...we will greet you-with garlands of detonating fuse-cord and an iron fist. FOCS will be held responsible for any unwanted eventuality".

The statement said Lamka was free before India's independence in 1947.

"Our forefathers bled for this land. We, the Zosuan (Hmar-Zomi-Kuki-Mizo), will defend it at any cost. Anyone who dares challenge us will face relentless resistance.

We do not need the Meitei, nor do they need us. For over two years, we have lived apart, proving we can survive without each other. Come as a good neighbor, or don't come at all. Otherwise, we will meet you in the buffer zone-with vengeance, singbong and suangtum."

The statement also lamented: "You burned our churches, butchered and killed our people, raped our women, vandalised, looted and turned our homes to ashes.

If you believe we have forgotten, step into Lamka and witness our fury."

Donald Trump prepares ground for "permanent US presence in Ukraine" ....... — " ... commercial rather than military"

Trump regards Zelensky the obstacle to peace !!

The agreement is the doorway to a permanent US presence — commercial rather than military — in Ukraine.

That would satisfy Vladimir Putin. Donald Trump refuses to accede to Zelenskyy’s demand for a Putin-proof security which NATO could have provided, had it granted Ukraine membership.

Now Trump regards Zelensky, not Putin, as the ‘steel porcupine’, the obstacle to peace.

Once the minerals agreement has been signed, a ceasefire arranged between Russia and the Ukraine, and Trump has arm-twisted a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, Zelenksy and his signature fatigues will go the same way as that other mannequin — Hamid Karzai and his distinctive Afghan chogha.

Trump has the world massaging his ego. Leaders flew into Washington, DC, to kiss the presidential ring. First, Israeli PM Netanyahu came to collect Gaza.

Next, President Macron reminded Trump of the US-French connection over the centuries. Then came British PM Keir Starmer. He had obviously read his Benjamin Disraeli: “Everyone likes flattery; and when you come to royalty you should lay it on with a trowel.”

Starmer shovelled his with an invitation from King Charles III for an unprecedented second state visit by Trump. (Queen Elizabeth II had found Trump “very rude”).

On Feb 28, it was Ukraine’s turn. President Zelensky, instead of lauding Trump’s efforts to achieve peace between him and Putin, entered into a slanging match with both Trump and his tutored VP Vance, who demanded Zelensky express gratitude for Trump’s support.

The meeting ended with an unrepentant Zelensky being escorted out of the White House, an unsigned minerals agreement, and future US commitment to Ukraine in doubt.

Over the past three years, Ukraine has received over $380 billion worth of aid, including $118bn in direct military aid from “EU institutions, 45 sovereign countries, companies, and other parties”.

Perhaps at the White House’s instigation, Starmer on Sunday summoned an emergency conclave in London of 18 leaders from Canada, Germany, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Türkiye, Nato, and the EU.

Its outcome?

Nato states must increase their military expenditure, up to three per cent of their GDP. Starmer, out of their weak flesh, fashioned a new ‘coalition of the willing’.

The EU wants Ukraine to become an indigestible ‘steel porcupine’, to deter Russia. And Zelensky has been ‘persuaded’ to sign the minerals and precious earths deal with the US.

What is in this proposed agreement that Zelensky has deliberately misread? Its draft proposes to establish “a reconstruction investment fund with joint US and Ukraine ownership”.

Ukraine will contribute 50pc of all revenues earned in the future from Ukrainian government-owned natural resources. It excludes existing revenue sources in Ukraine. Mining of such minerals takes time (about 18 years) and is capital-intensive.

The US expects Ukraine to mobilise its own funding.

India sits awkwardly on the Ukraine fence. It treasures its post-independence, non-aligned legacy, and has not forgotten cold war-era Soviet links. Through the G20 and an enlarged Brics – the organisation comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and UAE – it keeps close to the global south, which it aspires to lead.

"India’s 1.4 billion population – the world’s largest – youthful age profile and expanding economy – the fifth biggest – are turning it into a modern Klondike. Gold-diggers flock. All stake a claim for Delhi’s attention, influence, markets, skills and tech. At least, that’s how the prime minister, Narendra Modi, sees it.

His Hindu nationalist devotees believe India, a “civilisational state”, is embarked on a benign global mission as a vishwaguru (teacher to the world) under Modi Baba’s sage, cult-like tutelage". - 'The Guardian'

"We deplore the misuse of democratic freedoms," MEA after Jaishankar confronted with security breach :::: Videos showed Khalistani extremists, waving flags and chanting slogans !!

As External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar was leaving the Chatham House venue, after a discussion, a man ran toward his car and tore the Indian national flag in front of police officers.

Videos of the chaos showed Khalistani extremists, waving flags and chanting slogans, outside Chatham House. The man, who tore the Tricolour, was also caught in another video running aggressively towards Jaishankar's convoy. Despite appearing hesitant to act initially, the police present at the spot later took the man and other extremists away.

During his UK visit, which will end on March 9, Jaishakar also met UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy. The two leaders spoke on several topics, including political cooperation, education, mobility, people-to-people exchanges and strategic coordination, among others.

The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said that any attempts to disrupt public events are completely unacceptable.

"We strongly condemn the incident that took place outside Chatham House yesterday during the External Affairs Minister's visit to the UK. While the UK upholds the right to peaceful protest, any attempts to intimidate, threaten, or disrupt public events are completely unacceptable," the FCDO statement said.

The Metropolitan Police, it said, acted swiftly to address the situation.

"We remain fully committed to ensuring the security of all our diplomatic visitors, in line with our international obligations," the statement added.

The UK's reaction with regard to the incident came hours after the Indian government strongly reacted to the security breach, condemning the "provocative activities".

"We have seen the footage of a breach of security during the visit of EAM to the UK. We condemn the provocative activities of this small group of separatists and extremists. We deplore the misuse of democratic freedoms by such elements.

We expect the host government in such cases to fully live up to their diplomatic obligations," said the statement from MEA.

During the discussion at Chatham House, the External Affairs Minister faced a question by a Pakistani journalist, who claimed the same would make Jaishankar a "little nervous".

The journalist then accused India of "illegally occupying Kashmir". Furthermore, the journalist claimed Kashmiris are "up in arms", alleging India has stationed "one million troops to control seven million Kashmiris" before asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi could utilise his friendship with US President Donald Trump to resolve the long-standing Kashmir issue.

Dr Jaishankar firmly dismissed any third-party intervention and defended India's approach to handling the Kashmir issue.

Manipur Governor Bhalla and Govt of India may face 'new challenge' .... growing nexus and operational links between Meitei and Naga militants

The Naga Peace talk is derailed in every political sense.

The new administration in Manipur under Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has multiple challenges and hurdles.

And yet another problem that has started surfacing is the growing nexus and operational links between Meitei and Naga militants.

This new challenge will probably nullify Governor Bhalla's 'invitation' to the youths and others to surrender all illegal and looted arms.

Central security forces used to complain right from 2023 days that they were not given free hand to fight the wrongdoers and prevent the chaotic situations turn worse.

The erstwhile Biren Singh government was given free hand from Delhi and the forces often had to bear the brunt of political interference.

One adverse fallout with long term impact was to brand Assam Rifles as pro-Kukis. The perception was a part of a political propaganda.

And it did a big damage often preventing the prestigious para military force discharging their duties professionally.

It suited the local political masters. The central forces were also unable to show expected results as in many vulnerable pockets the AFSPA was not in force.

Two Assam Rifles were later replaced by forces which were not quite experienced in handling insurgency.

Of course at a subsequent stage the necessary corrective measures ought to be taken like in Jiribam region in 2024. In fact, the AFSPA saved lot many lives in the violence hit pockets and especially Hmar people were 'rescued and saved'.

"I would not have backed AFSPA had we been protected by police and other forces before Assam Rifles arrived.... There was apparently a deliberate negligence and our people were attacked in a gruesome manner," said Lalram Sung, Village youth chairman, who has given his house now to a platoon of Assam Rifles personnel.

The controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Acts (AFSPA) of course accompanied with the Disturbed Area Act empower the Forces to act in difficult situations.  However, the central government says there is also a "robust mechanism" in place for course correction during operations and conflicts.

Thus, while admitting the need for the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, the onus lies squarely on the Armed Forces to ensure that these special provisions are not put to any "misuse". The government in the past "did not hesitate" in taking stern action against the guilty, in case of any misuse/abuse of powers.

However, it ought to be remembered that the anti-India elements in Kashmir or militants in the northeastern region have an advantage of surprise elements.

This 'surprise' actually means near fatal roadmaps for soldiers.

On this backdrop we must take into account the entire scenario vis-a-vis the 'deadline' fixed by Governor Bhalla to surrender arms in Manipur.

Is it possible in the process of this 'deadline' extension - the Governor and the authorities in the Home Ministry has given 'certain time' to the underground groups and guerrilla fighters to shift 'base' across the border ?

Hence the refrain in Delhi is no further time should be wasted and hence no less Home Minister Amit Shah himself has said it categorically that strict actions should follow/kickstart from March 8th.

According to Shah - thus strict action must be taken "against anyone attempting to create obstructions".

The centre should also allow security forces and state police to examine all pros and cons of nexus an operational links between Naga and Meitei militants.

The problem has its own complexity because there are multiple armed militant groups among Meiteis. The UNLF and PLA will be two chief groups to be tracked at multiple levels virtually round the clock.

On the other hand, it could be NSCN-IM chiefly among the Nagas trying to befriend the Meitei 'self-styled compatriots'.

The 'chemistry' is very good between Naga militants and rebels in the Imphal valley, admitted a security analyst in Delhi.

Endorsing the spirit of the statement, Lt Gen Abhay Krishna (Retd), former chief of Eastern Command, has said that -

"We have to understand that Myanmar’s crisis is not just an internal struggle for territorial control, but it is also a proxy battleground for both regional and global powers.

The real battle is for international legitimacy, whether the junta remains in power or Myanmar’s future will be shaped by the National Unity Government (NUG) and its bid for global recognition."

Hence, if some sources are suggesting on the importance of gauging the depth of understanding between the Naga and Meitei militants, there are merits for the same.

This should also alarm those players in Delhi who are involved in day to day developments vis-a-vis the Naga peace talks. If the efforts are not yielding expected results, the Government and especially the Home Ministry need to act faster than the speed they are doing so at present.

If President's Rule in Manipur has to succeed; the authorities need to ensure that there is effective support to the security apparatus from the neighbouring states of Mizoram and Nagaland too.

In Mizoram, the quantum of insurgency is practically non-existent.

The problem is actually in Nagaland - where operational links between militants from Manipur (including with the rebel Meitei groups) will end up harming all good works of the last two-three decades.

Some arms flow have been reported earlier too.

Moreover, things are not moving in the right direction in Nagaland politically.

The Status Quo club is behaving like a 'deep state' and is harming the entire dialogue process.

At the same time, the Modi government has belatedly started realising that the so-called NDPP-BJP regime is hardly behaving like its 'asset'.

Sleeves may have to be pulled up soon. When the gentleman type behaviour is taken as a weakness, one has to crack the whip.
