Assam police nabs most wanted militant linked to 2021 Manipur army convoy ambush

In a major breakthrough Assam Police arrested 'a most wanted militant' involved in the deadly 2021 ambush on an Army convoy in Manipur from the Hojai district of Assam.

The militant, a cadre of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), was apprehended in the Hojai district of Assam as part of a joint operation with the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The ambush, which occurred on November 13, 2021, near the Myanmar border in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, was one of the deadliest terror attacks in recent years.

A heavily armed group of militants attacked the convoy of Colonel Viplav Tripathi, Commanding Officer of 46 Assam Rifles, killing him along with his wife, eight-year-old son, and four riflemen.

As per inputs, at least 10 militants were involved in the attack, which was later claimed by the Manipur-based terror group.

Assam Rifles pays homage to Late Col. Viplav Tripathi and four riflemen who made supreme sacrifice on the line of duty.

To honour the supreme sacrifice made by Colonel Viplav Tripathi, Rifleman Suman Swargiary, Rifleman RP Meena, Rifleman N K Konyak and Rifleman Shyamal Das while serving in the insurgency ridden areas of Manipur on the fateful day of 13 November 2021; Assam Rifles organised a series of events at Churachandpur district,  Manipur.

Parents of Late Colonel Viplav Tripathi unveiled the memorial platform at the gates of Khuga Garrison to rename it as "Viplav Garrison".

Next of kin of Late Colonel Viplav Tripathi and Late Rifleman Suman Swargiary laid wreaths at the memorials dedicated to the heroes in a proud and emotional ceremony held at Khuga Garrison of Assam Rifles. Maj General Ravroop Singh, SM, YSM, Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) exhorted the gathering to seek motivation from their valour and sacrifice.

The finals of the inaugural edition of the Colonel Viplav Tripathi Memorial Football Tournament was attended by the relatives of the brave heroes.

The commemorative tournament started on 17 January 2025 at the Tuibong Peace Ground, Churachandpur. Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, AVSM, YSM, General Officer Commanding, 3 Corps along with Maj Gen Ravroop Singh, SM, YSM, Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) also graced the occasion.

The inaugural edition of the tournament witnessed participation from boys and girls with a total of 14 teams fiercely contending for the trophy, with Zengsol Football club emerging as the title winners in the women’s category and Sanggam Football club emerging winners in the men’s category.

The final matches were witnessed by a enthusiastic crowd, who cheered their teams. The winners and runners up were felicitated with rolling trophies, cash prizes and other rewards in a post-match ceremony.

The undying commitment and social responsibility of the Assam Rifles was lauded by the local populace.

The event reignited the sense of patriotism and national integration in the minds of the local population who bore witness to the ultimate sacrifice made by these fallen heroes.

Earlier in 2022, a wanted Manipur Naga People's Front terrorist, carrying a cash reward of Rs 4 lakh on his head, was arrested in connection with an ambush on an Assam Rifles commandant's convoy in Manipur.

The ambush was carried out when Colonel Tripathi was returning from a forward camp around 11 AM.

Following sustained intelligence efforts, Assam Police tracked down and arrested the PLA militant in Hojai district, marking a crucial step in the ongoing investigation into the attack. Security forces believe this arrest could lead to more breakthroughs in dismantling insurgent networks operating in the Northeast.

This high-profile arrest is being seen as a major success for Assam Police and NIA, reaffirming their commitment to eliminating insurgency from the region.

Further interrogations and investigations are expected to reveal more details about the network behind the attack and its links to other extremist outfits.
