BJP names Rekha Gupta for the top post in Delhi ::: Last saffron party Chief Minister in 1998 was a woman Late Sushma Swaraj

The oath-taking ceremony will take place from 11 a.m. to 12.34 p.m., with the Chief Minister’s swearing-in set for 12.05 p.m. 


The event will be attended by several key political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, along with over 200 BJP MPs and MLAs, and invited religious leaders.


(The BJP is planning big by the announcement of a woman Chief Minister. This may have a positive outcome in fast approaching assembly elections in Bihar later this year especially with women voters. State polls are due in 2026 in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.)

Gupta is Delhi's fourth woman Chief Minister

She will take oath at Ramlila Ground tomorrow  


She will be fourth woman Chief Minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj (BJP), Sheila Dikshit (Congress), and Atishi (AAP).





Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Dharmendra Pradhan, outgoing Delhi CM Atishi, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his Haryana and Rajasthan counterparts Nayab Singh Saini and Bhajanlal Sharma, New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj (daughter of Late Sushma) and former Union Minister Harsh Vardhan were among those who congratulated the CM-designate.


"...The party has given a very big responsibility. To fulfil this responsibility, a lot of strength and collective effort is needed. Today is a time to enjoy and work will begin from tomorrow," her husband Manish Gupta told IANS after the announcement.


'Giant-killer' Parvesh Verma, son of former Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma and the victor over AAP convenor and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat, was tipped as the Deputy Chief Minister though there was no formal announcement yet.


Veteran BJP leader Vijendra Gupta, who was the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, may be chosen as the new Speaker.



Delhi's wait for its new chief minister ended on Wednesday night, with the BJP naming Rekha Gupta for the top post. Rekha Gupta, who will be Delhi's fourth woman chief minister, will take oath tomorrow at the historic Ramlila Ground.


Rekha Gupta had won the Shalimar Bagh seat against AAP's Bandana Kumari and Congress's Parveen Kumar Jain. She won the seat by a margin of 29,595 votes.




Rekha Gupta thanked the BJP leadership for choosing her as the Chief Minister and promised to work with "full honesty, integrity and dedication" for the welfare of Delhi people.


"I express my heartfelt gratitude to all the top leadership for trusting me and entrusting me with the responsibility of the post of Chief Minister. This trust and support of yours has given me new energy and inspiration. 


I pledge that I will work with full honesty, integrity and dedication for the welfare, empowerment and overall development of every citizen of Delhi. I am fully committed to this important opportunity to take Delhi to new heights," Rekha Gupta said on X. 


Born July 19, 1974, in Julana, Haryana, Rekha Gupta was raised in a politically active family influenced by the ideologies of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). 

She pursued her education at Delhi University, where she earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Her academic journey continued with advanced degrees in management and arts. 


She was elected as a councilor from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) in 2007 and re-elected in 2012. Serving as a councilor enabled her to resolve local problems and implement community developmental activities.


Rekha has been in various key roles in the BJP. She was the General Secretary of BJP Delhi state unit and is now a member of the National Executive of the BJP. Furthermore, she has actively worked with the BJP Mahila Morcha.  


The BJP, which had been out of power in Delhi since 1998, won a convincing victory in the 2025 Assembly elections, winning 48 seats in the 70-member Assembly, and reducing the AAP to 22.
