The Congress party is going for 'lowest number' of candidates in its history in 2024
The grand old party is set to contest only 326 candidates in this year's general elections. So far, it has released names of 282 candidates.
Here is the table
1951 - Congress contested 479 -- and won 364
1957 - contested 490 - won 371
1962 - Congress fielded 488 candidates and -- 361 elected
1967 - 516 contested - 283 lected
1971 - 441 contested and -- 352 eected
Post-Emergency 1977 - 492 contested and it could win 154 only and was voted out of power
In 1980 -- Congress contested 492 seats and won 353 to storm back to power
In 1984 - under Rajiv Gandhi it contested 491 -- and 404 seats ( for Punjab and Assam Lok Sabha
polls were held in 1985 and out of 26 seats in today it won 10 more. So in that 8th Lok Sabha -- Congress had 414 seats.
1989 --- Congress contested 510 but won 197, And Rajiv was voted out.
1991 - 487 contested -- and Congress won 232 ...
12 seats it won later for Lok Sabha polls conducted later.
In 1996 -- Congress contested 529 -- and could win 140 only
In 1998 - it fielded nominees in 477 parliamentary segments and won only 141
1999 -- Congress fielded 453 -- but its tally was reduced to 114
In 2004 -- Congress contested 417 -- and won 145 to return to power
In 2009 Congress contested 440 -- and humbled L K Adavni-led BJP to win 206 seats
But in 2014 - while the grand old fielded 464 --- its tally came all time low 44
In 2019 - the Congress contested 421 and its tally was 52.
