Politics is best in a democratic set up. And in a democracy like India, it is often full of anecdotes and fables.
From die-hard Modi Bhakt to the most bitter critic -- everyone seems to suggest that once Narendra Modi gets 400 MPs by his side after June 4, 2024, the 'best' or the 'worst' of the Modi-led NDA regime will come in the next few years depending on how one looks at it. That Bharat Ratna was given to L K Advani could be debated. But what is important is the 'timing'. Notably it has come in the Election season and in a way that's paying homage to the man who handled elections in favour of his party so well.
But it is true two last elections of his life 2004 and 2009 - in particular- typically went against him. But L K Advani handled polls and coalition management very well. He was the master operator when it came to handling 'the many faces' of the BJP especially around 1991 and 1992. Congress Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao was also the party chief and the grand old party faced many challenges.
In 'moderates' versus hard-liners, BJP leaders versus VHP, Bajrang Dal versus VHP, L K Advani was a unifying factor. He had direct hot line with RSS headquarters Nagpur and thus the real games including the grounds those led to demolition of Babri Masjid/structure was only to keep the Rao-led Congress guessing. Veteran Advani really handled things well. And hence conferring India's highest civilian award was perhaps a befitting tribute.
Now it may be imperative to look at Narendra Modi factors and politics around him. There was a time NDA constituents like Ram Vilas Paswan-led LJP quit the coalition and ultimately in 2004 the BJP suffered a shocking defeat. Alliance partners like N Chandrababu Naidu left, came back in 2014 and again left in 2018. In 2024, the TDP is back in NDA fold.
Of course, Modi has been a hyper active Hindutva leader already but if he can muster an enhanced mandate of 400 plus, it is any body's guess now that the Prime Minister will go for pushing some radical changes in legal and social trajectories. India may opt for a Presidential form of politics and the Hindu way of life, social practice and teachings may be imposed in school curriculum, social functions and also in administration.
This is also an era when anti-corruption crusader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has gone to Tihar Jail No. 2. It may be little relevant now to reflect upon the past when his guru Anna Hazare was sent in there.
That moment marked the beginning of the end for Congress-led UPA. We are writing all these when people are also talking about 'friendly fights' vis-a-vis general elections.
We have seen such games in the past. In Haryana in the late eighties, the CPI-M and BJP then 'friendly' and anti-Congress parties had fought friendly polls.
Hence, analysts say while the players may have changed, the equations remain, and countering the might and strategy of today's BJP may prove challenging.
Another refrain is with more "friendly contests" in circa 2024, things are increasingly likely to favour Narendra Modi.
