The Road to Paradise is either via Solution or Surrender in style.
Peace is the Future
When a Rot happens ... it starts with Apologies. Then comes Shame and followed by Contraction.
The process of becoming or of making something become 'smaller' is contraction.
The Govt of India does not see itself as an adversary of Nagas or of the native tribals in northeast.
"We want to become a part of them; as much they are part of us since 1947 and more so since 1963 when Nagaland got Statehood". - This is a casual refrain and frankly -- this was a candid case that was a pleasant surprise for me. During one closed door interaction, one official told his colleagues - "Loha garam hae, mar do hatoda".
It's famous one-liner from blockbuster 'Sholay'. Sanjeev Kumar playing the Thakur instructs Jay and Veeru. The instruction was clear - "Heat hard, now that the iron is hot... It will break in no time".
I joined the debate very casually saying, "This was straight from Sholay". The participants laughed. The person who said the punchline did not even grin.
Later, I was told they (Delhi mandarins) have started assessing on whether the 'Eastern Flank' of the NSCN-IM has clearly gained the upper hand. But even if that is happening; New Delhi is not in any kind of merry-making ceremonies. On the contrary, the worry is a challenging scenarios may emerge.
The Eastern Flank has challenged the "core legitimacy" claim of the Hebron (NSCN-IM leadership) that they are stewarding the peace process. "We are worried because E. F says there is no ceasefire".
The NSCN-IM finds itself in a passive or at best 'reactive' mode. In terms of analysis a report has been dispatched either from Kohima or somewhere in the state -- that says --
"The transition is visible that from a position of pro-Hebron Kohima; a large message has gone and the world has shifted to "pro-Kohima Hebron". Why such a sentiment ?
The Eastern Flank’s statements have consistently position itself as the faction unwilling to dilute Naga political objectives.
But in "contrast", it accused the Hebron leadership of “compromise” and deviation from the 2015 Framework Agreement and also the peace talks.
This changes the entire rule of the game. From New Delhi's perspective; 'Kohima' is a manageable entity. So far so good.
In the specific contest over who represents the “true” Naga political‑military line; mandarins believe the Eastern Flank has clearly gained the upper hand in several key dimensions including:
- the ideological clarity,
- and in 'ability' to set the terms of debate around ceasefire fatigue. To say, there is no ceasefire any longer requires a particular variety of readiness. The Eastern Flank has that in them.
The Sarkari interpretation also is that at times the Hebron camp has been found making 'clarifications'.
These signals that alternative narratives including those favorable to the Eastern Flank are gaining traction faster. At times, New Delhi also finds that the Hebron camp is taking time to rebut them.

How it spanned out? The 'structural split' in the NSCN-M hardened into an open political rupture.
The Eastern Flank held an “extraordinary joint emergency meeting” at Mt Horeb Camp (Sagaing, Myanmar) on July 21, 2026 and declared a “provisional government” under Ikato I. Chishi Swu (son of late NSCN‑(IM) co‑founder Isak Chishi Swu).
H.S. Ramsan became the vice‑chair and probably the key power centre.
Owning the "no surrender" narrative, the Eastern Flank now calls itself the faction unwilling to dilute Naga political objectives. This includes Real Sovereignty. That means they are battle ready. Those in the know of things claims the Eastern Flank cadre strength is increasing by the week; and now it stands at around 400 to 600.
Crucially, it draws a huge advantage in mindgame. And EF has framed this move as a necessity element to save the Naga nation "from another surrender”. It pointed out that the “spirit of the ceasefire” in effect since 1997 with India had ceased to exist.
Having declaring a provisional government, the EF has stolen the initiatives to talks about issues which resonates in sections of civil society and online Naga public "skeptical of endless negotiations".
The EF is also able to "exploit" the present ambiguity and fog of war in Manipur.
The EF has also deployed tools and players to
- Leverage social media, viral claims, and counter‑claims.
As a result - the 'information space' is hacked in its favour and has viral documents and statements.
Hence, NSCN‑IM (Hebron) has had to issue clarifications dismissing a “fictitious budget” related to a senior leader’s visit.
There was also an admission that “undesirable elements” are running a “miserable game”.
Kohima-based 'Eastern Mirror' reported that : The NSCN (IM) has responded to the “viral circulated fictitious budget” on Facebook and WhatsApp regarding the expenditure of the Ato kilonser’s home visit.
“It is utterly absurd to suggest that the NSCN or the concern Committee would produce or disclose such a budget publicly. This misinformation appears to be a deliberate tactic employed by adversaries with malicious intentions,” the NSCN (IM) stated in a press release. (July 23, 2026)
It further denied having prepared such a budget for the home visit of the Ato Kilonser which is slated for October 22 (2026).
Further, in another statement, the NSCN (IM) clarified that “the Eastern Flank and Hebron camp, NSCN, remain as a solid body and no such thing as made to believe by what is being circulated in social media platform.”
“Undesirable elements are resorting to this kind of miserable game for vested interests.”
