In politics - we could easily write something else. The aim of a politician or the 'end' could be some mysteries. Let us examine this.
The BJP man now running the show called NCPI - the party 20 rebel TMC MPs jumped in
Jyotiprakash Chatterjee is now the president of the NCPI - which was perhaps worse than a so-called signboard party.
He is a former BJP functionary who had worked for the Lotus party and also has been a member of the media panelists team.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, he was involved in the campaign for Rekha Patra, the BJP candidate for the Basirhat seat.
Chatterjee’s elevation is thus quite surprising.
The new party organisation has 20 MPs in Lok Sabha and this is a significant milestone by itself.
The BJP has 240 MPs,
Congress - 99
Samajwadi Party - 37
DMK 22 seats
NCPI - 20
Hence, as an ally the strength of this new NDA constituent is above TDP - Shiv Sena - 13 seats and Janata Dal (United) - 12 seats
The story behind the story is that the original 'NCPI leadership' has been pushed aside.
Shewly Kundu was president of NCPI from Oct October 2022 till June 2026 - that is 3 years and 243 days.
Jyoti Prokash Chatterjee is its president since July 31, 2026
The party structure announced on Sept 22 includes six vice presidents, six general secretaries, 12 secretaries, a treasurer and a joint-treasurer. Former cricketer Yusuf Pathan (MP) is one of the vice presidents.
Effectively, seven former TMC MPs now hold national posts.
Among former TMC MPs, -- Abu Taher Khan, Deepak Adhikary Dev (actor), Jagdish Chandra Barma Basunia and actress Rachana Banerjee are all Vice Presidents. Vocal MPs Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar are also in the NCPI. From a humble beginning, the NCPI has come a long way.
The NCPI has never won an election.
It contested only a handful of seats in the 2023 Tripura assembly polls and had a very marginal electoral presence. Its reported donations for 2022-23 were just around Rs 1.13 lakh.
The NCPI’s founder - Uttiya Kudu is now a general secretary. He was part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ecosystem in the past.
Kundu’s background is worth examining. He was associated with the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), a trade-union organisation affiliated with the RSS. When the party was launched - Uttiya made his wife president and he had become a vice president.
The NCPI became nationally relevant almost overnight in June, when 20 TMC Lok Sabha MPs announced their merger with the party.
The rebels had meetings with senior political figures in Delhi, including one at Union minister Bhupender Yadav’s residence.
They subsequently declared their support for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was given a letter from MPs including Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Satabdi Roy, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Mala Roy and others for separate seating arrangement in the House.
"Acceptance has already come to us. They (NCPI) are happy to take us. We will work together with the NDA under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah," Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said in June.
