On February 27, 2026, addressing the Prakruti Krushi Parisamvad organised at the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, state Governor Acharya Devvrat provided detailed guidance on the serious consequences of chemical farming and the benefits of natural farming.
He also mentioned research showing that even a mother’s milk, once considered pure and life-giving for newborns, now contains traces of urea and pesticides.
The Governor said he was pleased that a serious subject like natural farming was discussed in the Assembly. Explaining the difference, he said organic farming needs 300 quintals of manure per acre, while natural farming focuses on growing beneficial microorganisms.
One gram of dung from an indigenous cow contains over 300 crore microorganisms, and cow urine is rich in minerals.
Using Jeevamrut and Ghan Jeevamrut increases earthworms and helpful insects in the soil, naturally improving its fertility.
The Governor said that earlier, diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart attacks were rare, but today even young children are diagnosed with cancer.

In May 2022, the western state became the first Indian state to ink an MoU with spiritual leader Sadhguru's Isha Foundation on a venture to 'Save Soil'. The Climate Change Department of Gujarat inked the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to participate in the global movement for 'Save Soil'.
The objectives of this MoU are to prevent desertification, control salinity intake of soil and increase green cover area.
It is true 'Desertification' in several parts of Gujarat has been a general cause of worry for years now. Hence, this was a timely intervention.
In fact, close on the heels of Gujarat government's decision to ink the MoU, neighbouring state of Rajasthan under the Congress party (in 2022) also entered into an arrangement with Sadhguru's Isha Foundation. The Isha Foundation has prepared a 'Soil Revitalisation Handbook' and that has been handed over to officials and representatives of both the states.
Gujarat’s alluvial plains are well-known for their aquifer system but due to overexploitation of groundwater in the northern districts, groundwater levels have shown a declining trend. This has led to a higher water-lifting cost in addition to the increasing investment required for the deepening of wells.
In fact, with the natural recharge not keeping up with the extraction, groundwater levels have dipped more than 190 m below ground level at some places in North Gujarat.
Artificial recharge of groundwater has an important role to play in water conservation and augmentation.
The Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) has adopted artificial recharge techniques, harvesting the surplus runoff and storing it in the sub-surface reservoir, giving a new dimension to groundwater sustainability in North Gujarat.
Desertification and degradation of soil are global challenges.
In the words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, -- "If left unchecked, this degradation will erode the very foundation of our societies, economies, food security, health, safety and quality of life".
Therefore, he said the human race has to reduce the tremendous pressure on land and its resources. Officials in Gujarat say most significant reasons for desertification in Gujarat are -- water erosion, salinity, wind erosion and vegetation degradation.
The BJP government in the state has also taken multiple measures and initiatives in different parts of the state to 'combat' desertification.
