#Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Monday lauded External Affairs Minister #Sushma Swaraj on her powerful speech at the United National General Assembly (UNGA).
Ms Mahajan maintained that the minister could put forward India's views on terrorism very strongly.
"Our Minister did give a very clear and strong message on terrorism," Mahajan said in a statement here.
Referring to a Sanskrit saying, "Bajradapi Katho-rani Mriduni Kusuma-dapi", the Speaker said Swaraj performance shows
she (Sudhma) had the ability to display before a global platform -- "a tough exterior but soft emotional heart".
Key Highlights of the 2016 Speech
Sushma Swaraj had labeled terrorism as the single biggest violation of human rights and a crime against humanity. She strongly criticized nations that harbor, finance, and export terror as an instrument of state policy.
Message to Pakistan:
In a direct reference to Pakistan, Sushma also had stated that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and permanent part of India and advised Pakistan to abandon any ambitions of claiming it.
She also dismissed allegations of human rights violations by Pakistan, telling them to introspect regarding their own actions in regions like Balochistan.
The 2016 Uri attack was a cross-border terrorist strike on an Indian Army brigade headquarters that resulted in the deaths of 19 Indian soldiers.

Four heavily armed terrorists belonging to the Pakistan-based group Jaish-e-Mohammed carried out the attack.
Notably within a few days of Sushma's address; the Indian Army had launched surgical strikes against terrorist camps in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.
The strike on September 28, 2016, was in response to the Uri terror attack.

SAARC Foreign Ministers' Meet: Will Dr Jaishankar emulate Late Sushma Swaraj ?

: Will Dr S Jaishankar, a text book diplomat-turned-External Affairs Minister, follow the footsteps of his illustrious predecessor Late Sushma Swaraj during the SAARC Foreign Ministers' meeting here later in the day?
"We will see when that happens....." - Dr Jaishankar had remarked on September 17 in Delhi when asked at a press conference on how would he interact or give any message to his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi when they meet on the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly.
Dr Jaishankar and his Pakistani counterpart Mr Qureshi will be face to face for the first time (2019) after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and in recent past both India and Pakistan have been targeting each other either on the issue of terror or alleged restrictions and human rights violation in Jammu and Kashmir.
During last year's SAARC foreign ministers meeting (that is 2018) on the sidelines of UNGA, Late Sushma Swaraj had immediately left after her remarks and did not have any exchange with the Pakistani minister.
She had also told the meeting that the terrorism was the single largest threat to peace and stability in South Asia.
On September 17 (2019) at the press meet in Delhi, Dr Jaishankar also has said -
"SAARC is a body for regional cooperation, my message on SAARC will be what you require for regional cooperation. You need trade, you need connectivity...
If you are to talk about the future of SAARC, which country is today promoting SAARC and which country is today impeding SAARC?"
Dr Jaishankar also has said - "That's an issue all SAARC nations need to reflect upon and I am pretty confident every other SAARC nation knows what the answer is".
Dr Jaishankar also asserted that Article 370 is not a bilateral issue but strictly an internal issue of India.
In last few days (in 2019) during his stay in the US, Dr Jaishankar has called Pakistan - 'terroristan' and wrote in an article that -
"A provision (Article 370) intended to provide temporary comfort to the process of aligning with the rest of the nation was misused for many years. By doing so, it encouraged links between separatist politicians and terrorist groups sponsored by Pakistan".
In 2026 (Friday, Sept 25) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar sharply responded to a Pakistani journalist who asked him a question related to terrorism.
"A terrorist country is asking me that question. Come on," Jaishankar said in a strong response to the question by the Pakistani journalist.
The Pakistani journalist had almost shouted a question to Dr Jaishankar,
"When will your government stop sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan?"
India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Harish Parvathaneni, told the Pakistani journalist,
"You have heard your reply. You have heard your response, loud and clear."
