“Over the next few days, leaders from across the world will gather for the BRICS Summit. I am fully confident that the conference will see positive and meaningful discussions on various issues with the aspiration of global welfare,” PM Narendra Modi said in a post on X.
The relevance of BRICS to the global economy and to the performance metrics of multilateral institutions has changed over the years. India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit at a challenging moment, when the global order is undergoing one of its most consequential transformations since the end of the Cold War.
The summit in New Delhi will take place against the backdrop of a global economy facing the adverse impacts of the Russia-Ukraine war, the West Asia crisis or Iran-US conflict especially the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and the Trump administration’s trade and tariff policies.
The two-day BRICS Summit hosted by India from Saturday (Sept 12) is expected to focus on boosting collective resilience in food, energy, health, disaster reduction and critical supply chains.
New Delhi is positioning the bloc as an effective anchor to navigate a fragmented geopolitical environment.
BRICS is no longer simply about geopolitics. Its future relevance will increasingly depend on whether it can expand the policy space available to developing countries and widen the range of development choices available to its members and partners.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and their counterparts from Russia- Vladimir Putin, South African Cyril Ramaphosa, Indonesia - Prabowo Subianto, Egypt - Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed Ali and Vietnamese PM Le Minh Hung are among the top leaders attending the summit.
The immediate question is whether India and Russia can explore further avenues for mediation so that the Russia-Ukraine conflict can move towards an end.
Modi’s message to Russian President Vladimir Putin — to “move from an endless war to the end of war” — should find resonance at the New Delhi summit.
Putin’s visit marks his first in-person participation at a BRICS summit outside Russia since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022.

New Delhi has gone on high alert with tight security and temporary traffic curbs as India hosts top world leaders for the BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam over the weekend.

India and China both have a stake in ensuring that global governance structures evolve to reflect the aspirations and interests of the developing world.
Yet working in a crisis environment is fundamentally different from operating under normal conditions. A crisis can alter positions, create instability and force institutions to respond to rapidly changing circumstances.
