Uttar Pradesh has all along struggled with a reputation for 'weak law enforcement', entrenched criminal networks and political patronage. Yogi Adityanath focused heavily on reversing this trend and brought a perceptible change.

The ensuing assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh have become crucial because Yogi Adityanath is himself in the race for prime ministership - either after PM Narendra Modi or after sometime more.

Uttar Pradesh is India's largest state that sends 80 MPs in Lok Sabha. The political correctness is so much that even a native of Gujarat state, Narendra Modi shifted to Varanasi in this large state. The state has a population of nearly 20-22 crore. Muslims make about a fifth of the population in the state.
The state recorded 66,396 crimes against women in 2024, the highest of any state, along with 3,209 rape cases.
Arguably, several Dalit women in particular have borne a distinct burden of these crimes. The central Govt's data shows that Uttar Pradesh accounted for 92 of the 275 cases of custodial rape registered nationally between 2017 and 2022.
Madhya Pradesh came second with 43.
The constitutional stakes extend far beyond the borders of Uttar Pradesh. The so-called “encounters” has become increasingly common in other states too. Thus 'encounter policing', punitive demolitions and increasingly stringent conversion laws — have influenced political discourse.
Political projection has increasingly tied the tough administrative image of the Chief Minister to a broader developmental milestones, blending punitive action with civic growth.
In choosing Adityanath as the UP chief minister — Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have not only authorized him to anchor BJP's massive victory in Uttar Pradesh but also had given Hindutva groups a new generation of leadership. Encounters and improved law and order position are BJP's principal themes to woo voters' support once again. That is why various statistics and figures have become important.
There are over 420 cases of alleged conversion row and in this Christians face the strong and long hands of the law. Moreover, 833 people were arrested under the stringent anti-conversion law between January 2021 and April 2026;
Christian groups monitoring the law counted 475 cases and 855 arrests in 2025 alone.
Complainants, including neighbors and activists of Hindutva vigilante groups, routinely accuse house prayer meetings by church leaders of inducement.
The pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) says neither religious identity nor caste decide about the police actions and encounter type operations. What decides is that the 'wrongdoers' are punished.
In 2018, of the 48 people killed in encounters, 30 were Hindus and 18 Muslims.
In 2020, 47 of the 120 people killed were Muslims. At a later stage; by 2024, police data showed 67 Muslims among 205 killed — close to a third of the dead in the state.
Under Yogi, the state of UP has recorded 17,043 encounters between March 2017 and mid 2026.
This makes an average of five a day — between police and alleged criminals since Yogi Adityanath, a Hindu monk-turned politician, became chief minister in March 2017 and promised a regime of law and order that would drive criminals out of the state.
Some 289 people were killed extrajudicially in these encounters, 34,253 arrested, and 11,834 injured. Eighteen policemen died, and 1,852 were hurt.
XM Yogi wants to makw the state a safer hub for investment. Former police officials like Vikram Singh noted that improved crime control directly boosted investor confidence.
