Importance of BRICS Summit on the context of possible meet between Modi and Xi Jinping

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Johannesburg, South Africa between August 22 an 24 (2023) to attend the 15th BRICS Summit at the invitation of South African president Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa.


This will be the first in-person BRICS Summit since 2019. The Summit will provide an opportunity to review progress of the initiatives launched by the grouping, and identify future areas of activity, the Ministry of External Affairs said. 

However, all eyes are on a possible meeting between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. 






Modi will also participate in a special event BRICS Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue being organized after the BRICS Summit, which will include other countries invited by South Africa.


During his visit, Prime Minister will hold bilateral meetings with some of the leaders present in Johannesburg.


Notably, ahead of ahead of a possible meeting between Prime Minister Modi with Chinese President Xi Jinping, top army officials in both the countries held Major General-level talks at two locations including Daulat Beg Oldie and Chushul to resolve the ongoing standoff in Eastern Ladakh. 

The Indian side was represented at the talks at two locations by Trishul Division Commander Major General PK Mishra and Uniform Force Commander Major General Hariharan.


The talks are following up the outcome of the 19th round of Corps Commander-level talks held between the two sides on August 13-14 at the Chushul Moldo border meeting point. The sources said the two sides are discussing the points about resolving the legacy issues including the resumption of patrolling in the Depsang plains and the issue of Chinese military presence at the CNN junction.


Meanwhile, it is learned that following his visit to South Africa, Modi will pay an official visit to Greece on 25 August 2023 at the invitation of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece.


This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Greece in 40 years.

India and Greece enjoy civilizational ties, which have strengthened in recent years through cooperation in areas like maritime transport, defence, trade and investments and people-to-people ties.


Prime Minister will hold talks with Prime Minister Mitsotakis to discuss ways to further deepen the relationship. He will also interact with business leaders from both countries, as well as with the Indian community in Greece.


On Friday PM Modi held tele talks with Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi when they reiterated their commitment to further strengthen bilateral cooperation including to realize the full potential of Chabahar Port as a connectivity hub.


During their conversation, the two leaders also discussed matters of bilateral and regional importance. Modi highlighted that India- Iran relationship is underpinned by close historic and civilizational connections, including strong people to people contacts, read a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs on Friday.


The two leaders also discussed cooperation at multilateral forums, including the expansion of BRICS, and looked forward to their meeting on the margins of the forthcoming BRICS summit in South Africa.
