BJP lawmaker Sushil Kumar Modi bats for mechanism to regulate content on OTT platforms
Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Sushil Kumar Modi on Wednesday urge the central government to establish a mechanism to regulate the content published on OTT platforms.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, he said, more than 40 OTT platforms operate in India, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, Viacom 18, Epic Tv, and Reliance Broadcast.
"The content on these platforms contains scenes depicting violence, vulgarity, obscenity, abusive language, soft porn, and glorify killings, and the use of drugs, which makes it difficult for the content to be viewed with family," he said and even pointed out that a number of well known actors and actresses are engaged in the content shown on these platforms.
"The market size of the OTT sector is increasing and is expected to be nearly USD 7 billion by 2027. The age ratings on these platforms should be monitored by an expert panel.
"There is censorship for films by the Censor Board, similarly, there is the Cable Television Network Regulation Act 1995 to review the content on television. "
"However, currently, there is self-regulation and no mechanism for the Government to censor or review the content published on these OTT platforms," said the former deputy chief minister of Bihar.
