Different states and ministries showcased government initiatives under this year's theme of "Swarnim Bharat: Virasat Aur Vikas", Golden India - Heritage and Development.
“May this occasion strengthen our efforts towards preserving the ideals of our Constitution and working towards a stronger and prosperous India,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday as the nation celebrated Republic Day in a grand manner.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto looked on as the guest of honour at India’s annual military and cultural parade in New Delhi held to mark the country’s 76th Republic Day on Sunday.
Jan 26th, Republic Day for India, marks the adoption of post-independence constitution in 1950 with the parade being held at a revamped colonial-era boulevard that also hosts major government buildings including PMO, Presidential palace - Rashtrapati Bhavan, Ministries of Defence, Home, Finance and Foreign Ministry.
President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi and other political and government leaders attended.
Around 5,000 artists performed over 45 dance forms.
A daredevil unit performed and some 40 aircraft, including 22 Indian Air Force fighter jets, participated in an air show across a clear sky.
An Indonesian military marching contingent also took part in the celebrations.
The event coincided with Prabowo’s two-day state visit to India, his first to the country since becoming president in 2024.
Indonesia was the guest nation at India’s first Republic Day, Modi said Saturday, adding that it was a matter of “great pride” to have the country part of the parade again.
India and Indonesia signed a series of agreements on cooperation on health, maritime security, digital technology with both leaders calling each other “brother”.
A total of 31 tableaux, including 16 tableaux from states and Union Territories, and 15 from central ministries and organisations rolled down the Kartavya Path. The theme for the tableaux was 'Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas'.
Cutting-edge defence platforms, including the BrahMos missile, Pinaka rocket system, and Akash air defence system, were displayed during the parade. The Army's Battle Surveillance System ‘Sanjay’ and the DRDO’s ‘Pralay’ tactical missile also made their debut. Other military assets on display included T-90 'Bhishma' tanks, Sarath infantry carrying vehicles, the Nag Missile System, and vehicle mounted infantry mortar system (Airawat).
In another first, the tri-services had a joint tableau symbolic of the spirit of unity among the country’s armed forces.
The DRDO’s tableau, with the theme 'Raksha Kavach', showcased multi-layered protection against multi-domain threats.
