Paralympics Medalist Nb Sub Hokato Sema of Indian Army with National Award winning artisans Chato Kuotsu and Nisato Zinyu of Nagaland will be attending Republic Day 2025 parade at Kartavya Path , New Delhi as special invitees.
Padamshri recipients Smt Konsom Ibomcha Singh, Smt Moirangthem Muktamani Devi & Shri Padamshru Machihan Sasa with National Award winner Smt Longiam Hemolata Devi & Shilpguru Smt Gurumayum Shanti Devi of #Manipur will also be attending the annual mega event.
Hokato Hotozhe Sema, a para-athlete from Nagaland state in northeast region, is hailed for contributing to the country's best-ever performance at the Paralympic Games in Paris.
The 40-year-old won a bronze medal in the men’s shot put final on Sept. 7, taking India's medal haul to 27—six gold, nine silver, and 12 bronze. This beat the previous record of 19 medals at the Tokyo Games in 2020.
Sema is now ranked 7th in the world. But beyond the medal and adulation lies an inspiring story of resilience and determination shown by the tribal.
Sema is the second of four children from a farmer’s family in Nagaland, one of three Christian-majority Indian states, where they account for 87.93 percent of the state’s 1.97 million people.
When he was young, Sema dreamt of joining India's security forces. He realized his dream but unfortunately lost his left leg in a landmine blast while on army duty on the Himalayan borders in 2002.
He was 32 then and confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. But he did not get dejected. He took to sports and chose the shot put to win at many national and international events.
