The JD(U) on Wednesday, Jan 22, sacked its Manipur unit chief Kshetrimayum Biren Singh for writing a letter to Governor Ajay Bhalla saying the Nitish Kumar-led party doesn't support the BJP in the violence-hit state.
Earlier Singh in the capacity of Manipur unit chief said his party has withdrawn support to the N Biren Singh-led dispensation in the violence-hit state.
The Janata Dal (United) clarified that it continues to support the N Biren Singh-led BJP government in Manipur, dismissing claims of withdrawing support as "baseless".
The party has also sacked its Manipur unit president, Kshetrimayum Biren Singh, for writing a letter reiterating the alleged withdrawal of support without consulting the central leadership.
The JD(U) cited indiscipline as the reason for his removal and reaffirmed its alliance with the BJP at both state and national levels.
The JD(U) has only one MLA, Md Abdul Nasir, in the Manipur assembly. Of the six JD(U) candidates who won the assembly election in February-March 2022, five joined the ruling BJP later.
The JD(U) also officially stated that its sole legislator will not sit in the Opposition bench in the assembly.
In the statement, Singh said trial under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution of the five MLAs who defected to the BJP in Manipur is pending before the Speaker's tribunal.
The Manipur BJP has 37 MLAs in the 60-member assembly, along with support of five MLAs of the Naga People's Front, and three independents.
The JD(U), which won 12 Lok Sabha MPs in the general election in 2024 is among the key allies whose support helped the BJP reach the majority mark after its seat tally dropped.
The BJP and the JD (U) are also allies in Bihar, where the assembly elections are due this year.
Nitish Kumar, known for his flip-flops across the political divide, returned to the NDA fold on the eve of 2024 parliamentary polls after his veiled demand to make him convener of the Opposition bloc INDI Alliance did not yield expected results.
JD-U national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan said the party took cognisance of the matter and “relieved” Singh of his position for indiscipline. He said the Manipur unit had not taken the party’s central leadership into confidence.
Stating that the party will continue to support the BJP-led government in the ethnic violence-hit state, Ranjan said, “The JD-U is committed to supporting the NDA, not just in Manipur but across the country.”
In the letter to the governor, JD-U’s Manipur unit chief wrote, “…After Janata Dal (United) became a part of INDIA bloc, support to the BJP-led government was withdrawn by Janata Dal (United) by informing the office of Hon’ble Governor, Leader of the House (Chief Minister) and Speaker.
As such, seating arrangement of the lone MLA of Janata Dal (United) in Manipur, Md Abdul Nasir, is made in the Opposition Bench in the last session of Assembly by the Speaker.”
“It is, hereby, further reiterated that Janata Dal (United), Manipur unit does not support the BJP-led state government in Manipur, and our lone MLA, Md. Abdul Nasir, shall be treated as an opposition MLA in the House,” the letter further read.
