"The culture of threat and intimidation has no place in a civilised society," came a firm assertion from the Naga Tribal Youth Organisation Coordination Committee.
Such declarations were rare.
But gradually they are becoming the order of the day.

Say - "Law enforcing agencies should book culprits
A statement like that is not one of a kind. Others are also joining in.
"The Dimapur Rengma Youth Organisation (DRYO) vehemently condemns the outrageous extortion demand of Rs 50 Lakh allegedly made by the NSCN (Khango) group against Aolemba Longkumer, Chairman of the Country Craft Development Society, on December 16, 2024," said the organisation.
"This egregious demand is not only reprehensible in itself but also shocking and unacceptable due to its exorbitant amount.
We strongly believe that entrepreneurs like Aolemba Longkumer, who are talented and self-made innovators, should be encouraged and supported by all sections of society, including the numerous Naga political groups, rather than being subjected to such blatant extortion." the DRYO stated.
Some public leaders also addressed televised media conferences and did not shy to condemn such extortion demands. Several public spirited individuals say it is worse even to think that such demands were made during the ongoing festive season.
Others say these militant organisations (both genuine and fake ones) and their cadres often throw up references to Christian values and when it comes to reality check, they themselves indulge in most 'un-Christian like activities'.
The extortion menace has been spoken about in the past as well. A few years back R N Ravi, the then Governor (and also peace talks interlocutor), had flagged off the concern.
Ravi also maintained (2000) that - "History bears testimony to the fact that armed insurgencies have rarely succeeded in achieving their political objectives and have invariably left a trail of blood, betrayal and bitterness".
In his observation without taking names, Ravi had made a veiled attack on the ultra groups (a few in particular) that -
"Protracted armed insurgency and endless peace process have taken an unacceptable toll on the people of Nagaland".
The organisations (December 2024) said that it was ironic that a Naga Political Group (NPG) whose motto was based on “Nagaland for Christ” was keen on using diabolical tactic in forcefully trying to extort Rs 50 lakh through false allegations instead of keeping the true principle of Christians during this festive season. Now; it is a healthy development that numerous organisations are coming forward to condemn such extortion demands and intimidation.
"We do not say a few condemnation statements will resolve all problems related to these demands but at least a good beginning has been made," a security analyst said in Delhi.
In the national capital, there are players who say such strong objections will ultimately help expedite the long pending Naga peace talks and ensure achieve the much awaited the final Solution pact.
The Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur (ASTD) has voiced grave concern over the 'extortion' demand of Rs. 50 lakh made by NSCN/GPRN (Khango) against Aolemba Longkumer, a respected entrepreneur and bona fide member of the union.
ASTD reaffirmed its commitment to peace and its stance against illegal taxation or extortion. It reiterated support for the principle of “one government, one tax” and pledged to stand firm against threats targeting its members or any Naga individual.

The Chümoukedima Town Youth Organisation (CTYO) reaffirmed the 1993 resolution of the Angami Public Organisation (APO) on “One Government, One Tax” and directives from the Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) urging Naga Political Groups (NPGs) to refrain from illegal actions within Angami jurisdiction.
The organization called on law enforcement authorities to act swiftly in apprehending the culprits and ensuring they face appropriate punishment.
"These statements are also morale booster for state police and other security forces," an analyst said in Delhi.
