US says -- "India's long-standing ties with Russia gives it the ability to urge Putin to end "brutal" Ukraine war

"We also believe India's long-standing relationship with Russia gives it the ability to urge President Putin to end his brutal war, an unprovoked war in Ukraine.

It is for President Putin to end. President Putin started the war, and he can end the war." -- White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said.

She reiterated the importance of New Delhi's role in promoting peace, stating, "India is a strategic partner with whom we engage in full and frank dialogue, including their relationship with Russia, and we've talked about this before. So we think it's critical that all countries, including India, support efforts to realise an enduring and just peace when it comes to Ukraine".

During bilateral talks with Putin on Tuesday, July 9, Modi expressed his concerns over the human toll of the nearly 29-month-long war in Ukraine, particularly the loss of innocent lives.

He said his heart "simply explodes" at the killing of innocent children, a day after a deadly Russian missile attack on a children's hospital in Kyiv.

The Prime Minister’s remarks, which appeared to be critical of Russia, came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted sharply to the Indian leader embracing Putin during their interaction.

The PM had also described Moscow as India's "all-weather friend and trusted ally".

PM Modi called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the Ukraine conflict, saying, "For a bright future for the future generations, peace is most essential. No solution is possible on the battlefield. Solutions and peace talks are not successful in the midst of bombs, guns and bullets, and we have to find the path to peace through dialogue."

Putin, on his part, thanked PM Modi for trying to help find a peaceful solution to the Ukraine issue.

"I am grateful to you for the attention you pay to the most pressing issues, particularly trying to find ways to resolve the Ukraine crisis, primarily through peaceful means," the Russian premier said during their meeting at the Kremlin.
