In nostalgic sense I keep remembering Late Huska Sumi these days. Once I had sought his "help" on certain matters of security for a non-Naga individual who was posted in his Pughoboto region with a particular government department.
A kind hearted man always - Huska had surprised me. He said: "Nirendra, I do not like the word help".
Huska had a unique maverick mannerism. He had the ability to surprise friends and foes and could even give a shocker when he would criticise himself.
I was taken aback somewhat but not surprised.
He had said: "I am speaking from my experience .... Be sure about one thing .... when you HELP someone... that would come back to you after some years as a form of betrayal and that person will do something grievous to hurt you politically, physically and also I am not surprised if it is emotionally".
I am remembering these words because one former boxer or something in Mizoram or in Nagaland or elsewhere have become a journo. I still remember the 'chairs' in Nagaland times -- we sat and I had tried to "help" the gentleman.
Now in 2025 -- after 30 plus years the 'gentleman' with the ability to punch and kick had said some very encouraging words about me in 'negative' sense.
This is not an attempt to expose an old friend. But I feel Huska was right. But importantly in political sense -- what was right for Huska and me (as an individual) is today also true for the Govt of India.
The powerful 'Chinese' influence is so much that Oct 22 (2025) has become a day --- which the Govt of India will try to define and redefine in times to come.
And the refrain these days in and around North Bloc (some offices have moved out) is -- 'well, we trusted someone'.
I also remember former prime minister Late Chandrashekhar - who after being deceived by a ploy by V P Singh and Devi Lal had said in 1989 -- "It is not a crime to be deceived".
Let us move ahead.
The China factor has not much to do with the history of the land. It is more to do about the ideology and guiding and misguiding theme called Communism.
In this political ideology - 'brainwash' is a technology and it is time tested.
Bengalis and fans of Satyajit Ray can narrate the perception better vis-a-vis the phrase 'Magaz dhalai' (Bangla for Brainwash). Send your disciple to Kolkata and you will find him 'influenced and already guided on a different roadmap'.
The typical Indian word for Disciple is 'chela' and once upon a time Geofrey Yadan (Editor of Nagaland Post) used to say that quite often.
Probably, some of you could guess. I am referring to Communism and its propaganda power.
Once the brain-washing is done... it's virtually done for life. And someone who married into a pro-Marxist family in Tripura - my case is ---- the 'great Lal party influence' passes onto next two-three generations at least.
Hence about many things happening and not happening in West Bengal and Tripura - two former red bastions - I am not surprised. Negativity is a virtue. Working shirking is a fashion statement and it got into Assam as 'Lahe Lahe' syndrome.
Nagaland has its own version. This time you should guess.
Even Covid19 vaccines of Narendra Modi became 'glucose water' in Tripura.
Let us talk about another Marxist-ruled state Kerala.
| Kerala hospitality is superb !! |
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was in 2021 accused of indulging religion-based tactics in his desperation to win the state election. And he did win in the ultimate creating a record.
Vijayan had reportedly made anti-Muslim statements (2021) trying to bolster electoral prospects among Christians and the majority Hindu base. In a Facebook post, Vijayan said a rival Congress alliance partner, the Indian Union Muslim League, was gaining prominence in Kerala. It was alleged that the statement aimed to get the support of Hindus and Muslims.
The Congress ultimately lost the polls.
This happened at a time when the BJP was 'allegedly vigorously' pushing radical Hinduism to make deeper penetration in Kerala.
Vijayan’s government has been slowly implementing a court order on the age-old dispute between the two Christian factions — the Orthodox and rival Jacobite. The court order asked to take over more than 1,100 churches from the numerically stronger Jacobites and hand them over to the Orthodox outfit.
It is argued that not implementing the order helped the communists in the December civic body polls.
Something like 'radical Communism influence' has happened on Oct 22nd too.
Muivah's speech at his village Somdal left people aggrieved. It is also seen as a setback to Team Modi's persuasion skills. Even hardline defenders of the project 'Somdal visit' - either in Imphal or in Delhi ... will not be able to defend this kind of speech delivered by an aging person.
If the NSCN-IM was not in the negotiation process -- perhaps this was a perfect speech from a guerilla underground leader who wants cessation from India. But as it came from a group and its leader - who is in peace parleys for 28 years and over 100 rounds of talks held; it was a bit harsh and unexpected.
It said New Delhi should apologise !!
One pro-Govt of India analyst said on the condition of anonymity that - "Left to me ... I will say it was not Muivah's speech. Muivah has been good at political diplomacy. To be frank does not mean to be impolite... Today it was an impolite speech."
The NSCN-IM may still be the most potent group among Naga militants; but failing to appreciate and heed the "limits" of own influence and practical ground situations have made it a light weight.
It has done three-way quick damages. It has affected the Credibility; it exposed hollowness of whatever Neiphiu Rio has been saying publicly and it also corroded the 'politics' on ground including at home Ukhrul district.
In Nagaland - people including a few in the NNPG simply dismiss -- saying: "We were not surprised and so why analysts or media and the Govt of India is surprised".
Pendulum has swung !! ....
Finally, the tide is rising.
It did not rise high enough this time; but it will continue to rise. Cock may crow .... or may prefer the silence of the golden cage.
But the victory or the destruction has been simply deferred.
