Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP claimed on Sunday that over 400 Hindus have been “forced to flee” their houses in Dhulian in West Bengal's Murshidabad district following a violence triggered by a protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 that allegedly left three people dead.
The Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal assembly blamed the chief minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress for its alleged “appeasement politics” which has “emboldened radical elements”.
“More than 400 Hindus from Dhulian, Murshidabad driven by fear of religiously driven bigots were forced to flee across the river & take shelter at Par Lalpur High School, Deonapur-Sovapur GP, Baisnabnagar, Malda,” Adhikari wrote in a post on X.
Violence erupted during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, with accusations of police misconduct and political blame game intensifying.
The unrest began when protesters blocked National Highway 12 and refused to disperse despite police requests. When authorities attempted to forcibly lift the blockade, tensions escalated, leading to violent confrontations.
A heavy police presence, including Rapid Action Force personnel, was deployed to restore order.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, passed after extensive debates in Parliament and signed into law by President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday, officially came into effect on April 8.
The legislation aims to streamline the management of Waqf properties—assets donated by Muslims for religious or charitable purposes—while safeguarding heritage sites, promoting transparency, and enhancing coordination between Waqf boards and local authorities.
In a post on X, BJP leader Sujanta Majumdar alleged that "violent Islamist mobs" were running rampant in Murshidabad under Manata Banerjee’s administration, while Hindu communities were being targeted.
He blasted Mamata for her "spineless brand of appeasement politics," claiming it was dragging Bengal towards chaos.
