Earlier this year -- the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters :
"There is a request... the request (of extradition of Sheikh Hasina) is being examined as part of ongoing judicial and internal legal processes".
As a matter of fact, Bangladesh, on April 8, 2026, had reiterated its request to extradite Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to Bangladesh, who have been awarded the death penalty by the International Crimes Tribunal.
Meanwhile in a crucial development, Bangladesh Junior Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaed Islam, has said the people of Bangladesh want former prime minister Sheikh Hasina extradited, and efforts are underway to bring her back to the country to face the trial.
"Of course, we should bring her back to Bangladesh and complete the trial. That is what the people of Bangladesh want. Work is underway for that purpose," she told reporters when asked about Hasina's recent controversial remarks.
A few days back, the former PM said she could land in her country in 2026 itself.
"I was elected Prime Minister five times by the people's vote and worked for the country's unprecedented development. Almost my entire life has been tied to the people of Bangladesh, to the Awami League, to the democratic struggle, and to the development of Bangladesh.
So, I want to say clearly: overcoming every obstacle and every conspiracy, I will return to my country this year," she told NDTV.
The Bangladesh minister, however, said there is nothing new to disclose at this moment.
Responding to another question, Shama Obaed said Bangladesh maintains relations with all nations, and each relationship is unique.
"We will have relations with China. We will have relations with all countries. And I don't think that if relations with one country are good, relations with another country will be bad," she said.
The Bangladesh minister said the government's goal is to safeguard Bangladesh's national interests by maintaining good relations with all countries. "This is our goal," she remarked.
Reiterating its desire to engage constructively, India has also earlier said that New Delhi is examining the request for former Hasina’s extradition as part of ongoing judicial and internal legal processes.

"We will continue to seek her extradition through a transparent judicial process. It (the extradition request) has been discussed. It will be dealt with through a transparent judicial process," Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir has also stated.
In an unrelated development but marking a significance, Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer and Rangpur-2 MP, ATM Azharul Islam, today questioned whether the BNP regime was trying to rehabilitate Awami League.
"You have called for banning Jamaat. Let me ask just one thing. Suppose we are banned. Who will fill that vacuum?” the senior Jamaat leader asked in what is seen as a clear reference to the Tarique Rahman-led BNP.
Awami League marked its 77th Founding Day last Tuesday (June 23) in defiance of a nationwide ban. Dozens of its activists were arrested amid tight security, reports said adding, however in many places the AL workers celebrated the occasion and also staged demonstration.
The Jamaat MP has further asked, “Will you (BNP) run the country alone?
Do you want to establish a one-party rule? Who will fill that space? Are you trying to rehabilitate the Awami League? I believe you are trying to rehabilitate the Awami League.”
