"The government of India has really helped us" - says Iranian envoy Mohammad Fathali
The Ambassador also revealed that 'some other countries' refused to cooperate during/following the IRIS Dena sinking. He didn't name anyone.
The sinking of the IRIS Dena, which was returning from a naval exercise in Visakhapatnam, by a US submarine near Sri Lanka triggered a legal and moral debate.
Iran's envoy Mohammad Fathali has now put an end to the debate with his remarks at the India Today Conclave 2026.
On being asked at the 'India Today Conclave 2026' on Saturday to remark on the assistance and response from India and Sri Lanka on Iran's ships, Fathali said,
"The government of India has really helped us".
"Let me just talk about Iran and India. I am the Iranian ambassador to India. Let me not talk about the third country you mentioned. As an ambassador, I should see everything precisely," Fathali said.
"The government of India regarding these ships really helped us. They accepted our request. Unfortunately, some other countries refused to cooperate," he said.
"Despite all of this, we will definitely give them a response, and part of that we have done. Definitely you will hear good news in a few days. Iran doesn't leave any action without a response," the Iranian ambassador said.
There were attempts by certain quarters including Sickular gang and the infamous eco-system to give a twist to the mishap and trying to present Govt of India as 'anti-Iran'.
But New Delhi has not only maintained a smooth and mutual respect and trust in mutual ties; top leaders of both the countries have been also talking over phone time to time.
Notably, the External Affairs Ministry’s Fact Check Unit has also debunked claims on social media that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has rejected Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s request to allow Indian ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Fact Check Unit has called the claim fake and asked the citizens to stay alert against such claims on social media.
The Ministry has also termed as fake the claims on social media that Iran’s policy is clear that allies of the United States and Israel, especially India, will not be permitted entry.
PM Modi held a tele conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the serious situation in the West Asian region.
Modi said he expressed deep concern over the escalation of tensions and the loss of civilian lives as well as damage to civilian infrastructure.
The Prime Minister said the safety and security of Indian nationals, along with the need for unhindered transit of goods and energy, remain India’s top priorities.
He reiterated India’s commitment to peace and stability and urged for dialogue and diplomacy.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held at least four phone conversations with External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar to discuss the escalating Middle East crisis.
Tehran called for greater cooperation among BRICS nations to support global stability.
According to an Iranian readout, Araghchi briefed Jaishankar on the latest situation following what Tehran described as US and Israeli attacks and their impact on regional and global stability.
He also stressed Iran’s determination to exercise what it called its “legitimate right of self-defence”.
