Nehru dropped Maa Durga stanzas from Vande Mataram in 1937: BJP attacks Congress
BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan accused the Congress of "deliberately distorting" Vande Mataram under Nehru's leadership, claiming stanzas hailing Goddess Durga were removed in 1937 to appease communal sensitivities.
(The Vande Mataram controversy in 1998 during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's tenure primarily stemmed from a directive by the Kalyan Singh government in Uttar Pradesh to make the singing of Vande Mataram and Saraswati Vandana compulsory in all government-run primary schools.
In his second stint, Kalyan Singh was in power between 21 September 1997 to 12 November 1999.
Earlier Kalyan Singh served as UP CM between 24 June 1991 and 6th December 1992. His government was dismissed on Dec 6, 1992 after Babri structure was brought down.
This move to impose singing Vande Mataram and Saraswati Vandana was met with significant protests and led to a political discussion regarding the imposition of nationalistic practices in educational institutions.
PM Narendra Modi on Friday, Nov 7th, launched year-long celebrations marking 150 years of Vande Mataram, calling the national song the ideological force behind India's freedom struggle and a timeless symbol of unity and national pride.
"Vande Mataram is a true symbol of India's unity as it has inspired generations. I congratulate my Indian brothers and sisters on this occasion. As we mark 150 years of Vande Mataram today, this will give us new inspiration and fill the people of the country with new energy," Modi said.
The Prime Minister said that the celebration will give new inspiration to many citizens of the country.
"Vande Mātaram" ..... "I praise you, Motherland .... I Bow to Thee, Mother is a poem that was adopted as the national song of the Republic of India in 1950.
It is written in Sanskritised Bengali by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in the 1870s and was first published in 1882 as part of Chatterjee's Bengali novel Anandmath.
The poem is an ode to the motherland, personified as the "mother goddess" in later verses, of the people. This initially referred to Bengal, with the "mother" figure therefore being Banga Mata (Mother Bengal) though the text does not mention this explicitly.
Nationalist and philosopher Sri Aurobindo referred to Vande Mataram as the "National Anthem of Bengal".
Nonetheless, the poem played a vital role in the Indian independence movement.
It first gained political significance when it was recited by Rabindranath Tagore at Congress in 1896.
By 1905, it had become popular amongst political activists and freedom fighters as a marching song.
The first two verses of the poem were adopted as the National Song of India in October 1937 by the Congress.
The song, as well as Anandmath, were banned under British colonial rule under threat of imprisonment, making its use revolutionary.
The ban was overturned by the government of India upon independence in 1947.
"In a letter dated Sep 1, 1937, Nehru spitefully writes that anybody considering the words in Vande Mataram as anything to do with a Goddess was absurd.
He also derisively opines that Vande Mataram is not suitable as a national song.
Netaji Subash Bose had strongly advocated for the full original version of Vande Mataram. On Oct 20, 1937, Nehru wrote to Netaji Bose claiming that the background of Vande Mataram was likely to irritate Muslims," the spokesperson said.

"The main emotion of Vande Mataram is Bharat, Maa Bharati...
Bharat ek rashtra ke roop mein wo kundan ban kar ubhra jo ateet ki har chot sehta raha aur sehkar bhi amaratva ko prapt kar gaya
(India as a nation emerged as a gem that endured every blow of the past and through cooperation also achieved immortality)," PM Modi said.
"The concept of India is the ideological force behind it... The sense of one's independent existence... Only from the depths of the heart and the infinity of emotions does a composition like Vande Mataram emerge.
In that period of slavery, Vande Mataram became the proclamation of this resolve. And that proclamation was of India's independence," PM Modi said.
"It is imperative for the younger generation to know how the Congress, pandering to its communal agenda, adopted a shortened Vande Mataram at its Faizpur session.
The glorious Vande Mataram became the voice of our nation’s unity and solidarity, celebrating our motherland, instilling nationalistic spirit and fostering patriotism.
But the Congress committed the historic sin and blunder of linking the song with religion. Congress under Nehru citing religious grounds deliberately removed stanzas of Vande Mataram which hailed Goddess Ma Durga," Kesavan said.
