India denied Asia Cup after refusing it from PCB chief, celebrate empty-handed
It was one of the most bizarre scenes in cricket history.
The victorious Indian team celebrated without the trophy on the dials in Dubai.
Suryakumar Yadav said India were denied the trophy after it emerged that the team refused to receive it from Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi.
In the just concluded tournament India won all three encounters against its traditional rival.
And even won the final match !!
It was India's ninth Asia Cup title, following a five-wicket win in a thrilling final on Sunday.
The win drew massive cheers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a reference to Operation Sindoor.
"Operation Sindoor on the games field. The outcome is the same - India wins! Congrats to our cricketers," PM Modi said in a post on X.
The reference to Operation Sindoor and connecting it with Pakistan's loss to India in the Asia Cup title alluded to a fact - sports or military, India humbled Pakistan rather convincingly.
India's devastating airstrikes at Pakistan's terror infrastructure and military installations in May had left that country's airspace defenceless in a very short time. The pounding eventually led a top Pakistani military officer to dial India and request for a ceasefire. Even airports were severely damaged and several terror camps were vanquished and terrorists and relatives were killed.
India refused to collect the Asia Cup from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as the president of the Asian Cricket Council.
It was widely speculated that India would take this stand amid tensions between the two countries, particularly given Naqvi's dual role as a government minister in Pakistan and his provocative social media post during the tournament.
A few days back, Naqvi repeated Haris Rauf's controversial gestures from the India vs Pakistan Super 4 match in the Asia Cup 2025.
The PCB chief used a video of Cristiano Ronaldo and insinuated the fighter-jet falling gesture on the micro blogging site X.
Naqvi took to the platform on Wednesday evening during India's match against Bangladesh and added fuel to the fire.
India informed the officials that they were willing to receive the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni, who was sharing the stage with Naqvi. However, Naqvi did not permit this to happen.
India and Pakistan's fixtures in the Asia Cup 2025 have been marked by off-field drama.
In their first encounter, Pakistan boycotted the post-match presentation ceremony after India refused to shake hands at the conclusion of the game. India's decision to skip the customary pre- and post-match routines reportedly irked the Pakistan team.
In response, the Pakistan Cricket Board staged what was widely viewed as a symbolic "powerplay," accusing match referee Andy Pycroft of facilitating the handshake snub between Suryakumar Yadav and Salman Ali Agha. The PCB even threatened to boycott their subsequent match against the UAE if Pycroft was not removed.
However, Pakistan were compelled to play after the ICC rejected their appeal against the match referee.
In the Super 4 clash, Pakistan were once again unable to match India, who were themselves not at their sharpest on the field. Pakistan posted a total of 170, but it proved insufficient as Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill tore through the bowling attack with a 105-run opening stand.

ReplyDeleteFelt bad about the Emirati Shaikh on the dais. What was his fault? Allowing Asia Cup to happen in Dubai? In future they will refuse to entertain any cricket event featuring India and Pakistan.🤷🏿♂️ - K K Patil, Maharashtra
ReplyDeleteOnce government gave go ahead to the team to participate in Asia Cup, BCCI should have sorted these issues considering the mood in the country. Majority wanted India not to play with Pakistan given the backdrop of Pahalgam killings, but these tournaments do not come often and this wasn't a bilateral tour between the two countries. What would be the mood of the boycott gang in 2p27 when ICC ODI World Cup comes along? These big events are planned well in advance and they have a cycle. Also did any boycott caller speak about Neeraj Chopra competing against Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem in Tokyo25 WCH javelin throw event? It was an individual event wherein Neeraj, the defending champion was to take on Paris Olympics gold medallist medallist. Thankfully in Tokyo25 no one won medal of any colour. Then there would have been handshake occasions. Any untoward reactions from either would have caused a catastrophe. The two are good friends anyways, but those on social media from either countries would not have been pleased with any situation in the given tense scenario between the two countries. I feel sports field and contests should remain separate from political relations between the two countries. -- Toofan Singh, Chandigarh
