Nepal protests : Shoot-at-sight orders issued as Gen Z 'protesters' burn Parliament building

Tens of thousands protested in Kathmandu on Monday, Sept 8th, against a government ban on major social media platforms, including Facebook, X and YouTube, for not registering under state rules.

Demonstrators stormed barricades in New Baneswar, surrounded Parliament and forced riot police to retreat.

Security forces responded with tear gas and water cannons. One person was killed and 80 injured, including two journalists.

Nepali police used tear gas and rubber bullets to push back crowds of young protesters who attempted to storm the Parliament building, according to authorities.

"We have imposed a curfew that will remain in effect until 10 pm local time (1615 GMT) to bring the situation under control after protesters turned violent," Kathmandu district office spokesperson Muktiram Rijal said.

He added that police were instructed to deploy water cannons, batons, and rubber bullets to disperse the demonstrators.
