Playing 'peace apostle', PM Modi says in Manipur ---- "Violence is a great injustice to ancestors and our future generations"

"Any kind of violence in Manipur is unfortunate. This violence is a great injustice to our ancestors and our future generations.

Therefore, we have to take Manipur forward on the path of peace and development and we have to do it together," PM Narendra Modi said while addressing a rally in Imphal.

PM Modi’s visit to Manipur was his first since ethnic violence erupted two years ago, killing over 200 people and displacing thousands.

The violence erupted in the hills in May 2023, after the Kuki-Zo community protested the Manipur High Court’s order directing the then Biren Singh government to consider including the Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribes list — a move that set the cat among the pigeons.

During his visit to the Kuki-Zo–dominated Churachandpur, followed by the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley, PM Modi emphasised peace and development as the central message to the violence-stricken region.

Launching development projects worth over Rs 1,200 crore in Imphal, PM Modi said this century belongs to the North East and the East, highlighting his government’s focus on the region’s growth.

"Today, development projects worth thousands of crores have been inaugurated and launched for the progress of Manipur.

These projects will enhance the ease of living for the people, strengthen infrastructure, and create new opportunities of employment for the youth of Manipur," he said.
